## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Tech News Aggregator

**Tech News Aggregator** collects articles from **TechCrunch, The Verge, Ars Technica, Wired, Engadget, and Hacker News** in parallel — returning title, source, author, URL, publish time, and 500-char summary. Filter by keyword, source, and date. Deduplication included. No API key required. $0.001/article.

Six of the highest-signal tech news sources in one API call. Whether you're building a news dashboard, tracking a specific topic across the industry, or running automated competitive intelligence, this actor gives you a clean, normalized feed without RSS parsers or per-site scrapers.

***

### Why use Tech News Aggregator?

1. **Topic monitoring across the industry** — Set `keyword: "AI"` or `"regulation"` and get instant coverage from all six outlets simultaneously. Identify when a story crosses from niche to mainstream.
2. **Competitive intelligence** — Set `keyword: "<competitor name>"` to track when your competitors get press. High coverage frequency signals important product moves.
3. **Newsletter and content curation** — Pull `since` yesterday's articles and select the top-performing ones by engagement for a weekly roundup or Slack digest.
4. **Research and analysis** — Collect historical articles on a topic using `since` date ranges. Build structured datasets for sentiment analysis or trend research.
5. **Hacker News signal extraction** — HN frontpage items are community-curated, high-signal tech stories that mainstream outlets often pick up 24–48h later. Use it as an early warning system.

***

### How to use

1. Open the actor on Apify Store and click **Try for free**.
2. Set `sources` to the outlets you want (or leave blank for all 6).
3. Set `keyword` to filter by topic.
4. Set `since` to limit to recent articles (e.g. `"2026-09-01"`).
5. Click **Start**. Returns deduplicated, sorted articles newest-first.

### FAQ

**Is there deduplication across sources?**
Yes — articles are deduplicated by URL before output. The same story won't appear twice even if multiple feeds carry it.

**How current is the data?**
All six sources serve public RSS/Atom feeds. Most update within minutes of publication. Run the actor with `since` set to yesterday to get only new articles since your last run.

**Does Hacker News work differently from the others?**
HN uses a community RSS feed (`hnrss.org/frontpage`) that reflects the current HN frontpage — high-signal, community-curated stories. The `author` field for HN reflects the submitter's username, not the original article author.

**Can I add more sources?**
Not in the current version. The 6 sources cover the core tech news ecosystem. For crypto-specific news, see the Crypto News Sentiment Analyzer.
