## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

Collect structured story information from public Google News search results. Each dataset record represents a story card, with its headline, displayed publisher information, date, summary, and media when available.

Story links are kept as Google News provides them. The Actor does not open publisher pages or collect full publisher articles.

### How to use

1. Enter one or more search phrases, or provide Google News search URLs in `startUrls`.
2. Choose the language and edition of Google News.
3. Set the maximum stories and result batches to collect.
4. Run the Actor and view or export the story records in the dataset.

Example:

```json
{
  "query": "artificial intelligence",
  "locale": "en-US",
  "countryCode": "US",
  "maxItems": 25,
  "maxPages": 3
}
```

### Input

| Input | Description | Default |
|---|---|---:|
| `query` / `queries` | One or more Google News searches (up to 10). | — |
| `startUrls` | Google News search URLs containing a query. RSS, story, and publisher URLs are not accepted. | — |
| `locale` | Google News language and region. | `en-US` |
| `countryCode` | Two-letter Google News edition code. Defaults to the region in `locale`. | — |
| `maxItems` | Maximum unique story records across all searches. | 25 |
| `page` | Fixed at 1; the search feed has no supported numbered page offset. | 1 |
| `maxPages` | Maximum result batches to collect per search, including the initial results. | 3 |
| `transport` | Use rendered browser results (`browser`) or initial page HTML (`http`). HTTP mode requires `maxPages` set to 1. | `browser` |
| `proxyConfiguration` | Optional Apify Proxy configuration. | — |

### Output

Each dataset item requires `storyId`, `headline`, and `articleUrl`. Other fields can include:

- **Story and publisher:** Google News story link, displayed publisher name and links, and the publisher favicon when shown.
- **Publication:** date wording and exact date/time values only when supplied by the page.
- **Content:** visible byline, author names, story-card summary, and its text metrics.
- **Media and labels:** visible images, image descriptions, image variants, and explicit opinion or video indicators.

Relative date labels such as “6 hours ago” stay as text; they are not converted into fabricated timestamps. Summary text is what appears on the Google News card, not the publisher’s full article.

Example dataset item:

```json
{
  "storyId": "example-story-id",
  "headline": "Researchers publish a new computing study",
  "articleUrl": "https://news.google.com/read/example-story-id",
  "publisherName": "Example Daily",
  "publishedAtText": "2 hours ago",
  "publishedAtPrecision": "hour",
  "bylineText": "By Alex Example",
  "authors": ["Alex Example"],
  "summaryText": "A short story summary shown on the Google News card.",
  "thumbnailUrl": "https://news.google.com/api/attachments/example-image"
}
```

The Output tab shows the available result fields. Run summary information is available with the run output in Apify.

### Limits and responsible use

Google News may vary story cards by query, edition, and time, so some stories may not appear. The Actor does not sign in or bypass access checks.

Use story information according to Google News and publisher terms, and follow applicable laws. This Actor is not affiliated with Google.

# Actor input Schema

## `query` (type: `string`):

One Google News search phrase (up to 200 characters).

## `queries` (type: `array`):

Up to 10 additional search phrases. Results are combined in one dataset.

## `startUrls` (type: `array`):

Optional https://news.google.com/search URLs containing a non-empty q parameter. RSS feeds, story URLs, and publisher URLs are not accepted.

## `locale` (type: `string`):

Google News interface locale used to form hl and ceid parameters.

## `countryCode` (type: `string`):

Two-letter Google News edition country code; defaults to the region in locale.

## `page` (type: `integer`):

Google News uses a dynamic feed rather than a verified numeric page offset. Only the first result feed is supported; use maxPages to bound scrolling batches.

## `maxItems` (type: `integer`):

Maximum unique story records saved across all supplied searches.

## `maxPages` (type: `integer`):

Maximum number of rendered result batches collected per search, including the initially loaded cards. This is a scroll bound, not a Google News page number.

## `requestTimeoutSecs` (type: `integer`):

Maximum time for each Google News navigation and its initial result-card wait.

## `requestDelayMs` (type: `integer`):

Pause after scrolling before checking whether Google News loaded another batch.

## `proxyConfiguration` (type: `object`):

Optional Apify Proxy configuration for public Google News page requests.

## `transport` (type: `string`):

Standard browser rendering is the default. HTTP reads only story cards in the initial HTML of the same Google News search page; it does not run scripts, call RSS, follow redirects or retry an access challenge. HTTP requires maxPages 1.

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "locale": "en-US",
  "page": 1,
  "maxItems": 25,
  "maxPages": 3,
  "requestTimeoutSecs": 30,
  "requestDelayMs": 1000,
  "transport": "browser"
}
```
