## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

Search public Google Scholar results for scholarly publications. Records include publication titles, bibliographic details, authors shown on the result, citations, versions, and links to publicly listed full-text resources.

You can optionally enrich selected records with public author-profile information and publication details from Google Scholar. The Actor does not open publisher pages or claim that a listed document is open access.

### How to use

1. Enter one or more research queries, or provide public Google Scholar search URLs.
2. Set the result limit and page range.
3. Choose whether to include authors, citation information, and version links.
4. Optionally enable identity-matched author or publication details.
5. Run the Actor and inspect the publication dataset.

Example:

```json
{
  "queries": ["information retrieval", "scholarly search"],
  "maxItems": 20,
  "page": 1,
  "maxPages": 2,
  "includeAuthors": true,
  "includeCitations": true,
  "includeVersions": true
}
```

### Input

| Input | Description | Default |
|---|---|---:|
| `query` / `queries` | One or more Scholar queries (up to 20). `keywords` and `searchQuery` are aliases. | — |
| `startUrls` | Public Google Scholar search URLs containing a query. `urls` is an alias. | — |
| `maxItems` | Maximum unique publication records across the run. | 25 |
| `page` / `maxPages` | First results page and maximum pages per query or URL. | 1 / 10 |
| `includeAuthors` | Include visible author names, public profile links, venue, year, and bibliographic line. | `true` |
| `includeCitations` | Include visible citation counts and related-article links. | `true` |
| `includeVersions` | Include visible version counts and version links. | `true` |
| `language` | Google Scholar language. | `en` |
| `country` | Accepted for compatibility; Google Scholar does not provide a country search filter. | `US` |
| `sourceTransport` | Use direct HTTP (`http`) or a fresh standard browser session (`browser`). | `http` |
| `enrichPublications` | Add matching public author-profile and publication details. | `false` |
| `maxEnrichedPublications` | Maximum publications to enrich across the run. | 3 |
| `maxSourcePagesPerPublication` | Set to `1` for author profiles or `2` to also inspect the matching Scholar publication page. | 1 |
| `detailTransport` | HTTP or standard browser for optional detail lookups. | `http` |
| `proxyConfiguration` | Optional proxy settings for public page requests. | — |

The Input tab includes controls for page timeouts, retries, and delays. Browser rendering uses more compute than HTTP requests. Optional enrichment matches profiles and publications against the selected search result; it does not infer profiles from author names alone.

### Output

Each dataset item represents a publication and includes the required `title`. Depending on the result, it can also include:

- **Publication details:** ID, DOI, type, publication URL, venue, publisher, year, and bibliographic metadata.
- **Authors:** visible author names, linked Scholar profiles, and author-list information.
- **Summary and access:** result snippet, PDF/HTML links, and available formats.
- **Citation context:** cited-by count and link, version count and link, and related-article link.
- **Optional enrichment:** matching public author profiles and publication details when `enrichPublications` is enabled.

Citation counts and available links reflect what Google Scholar shows and can change over time. Missing information is not invented. The Actor records links as shown; it does not open external publication destinations.

Example dataset item:

```json
{
  "publicationId": "scholar-paper-001",
  "title": "Public Web Scraping",
  "publicationUrl": "https://example.org/papers/web-scraping",
  "doi": "10.0000/example.123",
  "authorNames": ["A. Researcher", "B. Analyst"],
  "publicationVenue": "Journal of Data",
  "publicationYear": 2025,
  "snippet": "A study of extracting structured information from public web pages.",
  "citationCount": 12,
  "versionCount": 3,
  "pdfUrl": "https://example.org/papers/web-scraping.pdf",
  "publicationDetails": null
}
```

The Output tab shows the available result fields. Run summary information is available with the run output in Apify.

### Limits and responsible use

Google Scholar may vary or limit results by query and time. Page limits and optional profile lookups affect run time. The Actor does not sign in or bypass access checks.

Author names and public profile links can be personal data. Use collected information lawfully and follow Google Scholar terms and applicable privacy requirements. This Actor is not affiliated with Google.

# Actor input Schema

## `sourceTransport` (type: `string`):

Direct HTTP or a fresh standard browser session from the start. Both stop at access boundaries. Browser sessions use more compute and do not reuse account cookies.

## `query` (type: `string`):

One public Google Scholar query. Use this or queries.

## `queries` (type: `array`):

Up to 20 public Google Scholar queries. Results share the global maxItems limit.

## `keywords` (type: `array`):

Compatibility alias for queries.

## `searchQuery` (type: `string`):

Compatibility alias for query.
