## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## US State Business Entity Registry API (Unofficial)

Search **registered businesses in Colorado, Connecticut and New York** and download them as JSON, CSV or Excel, or read them through the Apify API. No account or API key is needed.

- **Search by** entity name, formation date, city, ZIP code, entity category (LLC, corporation, nonprofit, partnership, cooperative) and status, in one or more states at once.
- **Look up by ID:** Colorado entity IDs, Connecticut account numbers or New York DOS IDs, up to 1,000 per run.
- **Follow new registrations:** set `formedFrom` and sort by newest. All three registries are updated daily (CO, CT) or regularly (NY).
- **Per row:** registry state, entity ID, name, entity type and category, domestic or foreign, jurisdiction of formation, status, active flag, formation date, city, state and ZIP of the business address, plus NAICS code, dissolution date and annual report due date where Connecticut publishes them.

Good for know-your-business checks, verifying that a company exists and is in good standing, market sizing, new-business statistics by city or industry, and enriching your own company lists with registry IDs.

The data comes from three state open-data portals, read through their keyless public APIs: the Colorado Department of State's business entity dataset on data.colorado.gov, the Connecticut Secretary of the State's business registry on data.ct.gov, and the New York Department of State's active corporations dataset on data.ny.gov.

**Entity data only.** No registered agents, officers, CEOs, owners or other people's names, no email addresses or phone numbers, and no street addresses. Corporations sole, name reservations and other single-person or non-entity records are withheld.

### How to use it

1. Click **Try for free** and keep the prefilled input (the 20 newest active registrations across CO, CT and NY), or set your own filters.
2. Run it. Rows appear in the **Output** tab.
3. With several states, `maxResults` is shared evenly between them; room one state does not use goes to the next.

### How much does it cost?

- **$0.01 per run start** plus **$2 per 1,000 entities saved** ($0.002 each, the `entity` event). Example: 1,000 entities = $0.01 + $2 = $2.01.
- You pay only for rows that are saved. Withheld, filtered and duplicate records are free.
- Set **Maximum cost per run** when you start a run; the Actor stops cleanly when it reaches your cap. The minimum is $0.05, enough for 20 entities.

### Privacy: entity data only

- **No people.** Registered agent names and addresses (CO), CEO, registered agent and service-of-process names and addresses (NY) are never requested from the source: every request lists only the columns this Actor outputs.
- **No contact details.** Connecticut's business email addresses are never requested. No phone numbers exist in these datasets.
- **No street addresses.** Only city, state and 5-digit ZIP of the business address are returned. Many small businesses register at a home address, so street lines, suites, mailing addresses and records addresses are never requested.
- **No ZIP code where the entity is likely one or a few people:** general partnerships, limited liability partnerships and professional service corporations or LLCs.
- **Entities named after a person are left out entirely**, e.g. "JOHN SMITH LLC" or "JANE DOE, M.D., P.C.". The name check is a heuristic and errs on the side of leaving rows out; withheld rows are free.
- **Also withheld entirely:** corporations sole (an office held by one person), Connecticut name reservations and rejected filings, New York name reservations and designations, and any entity type this Actor does not recognise.
- **No owner characteristics.** Connecticut's woman-, veteran-, minority-, disability- and LGBTQI-owned flags and map coordinates are never requested.
- Name searches match the entity's own registered name only.

### Limits

- **Three states:** Colorado, Connecticut and New York. Other states do not publish their registries as keyless open data.
- **New York lists active entities only** (the dataset is a monthly snapshot of active corporations, LLCs and partnerships), so `status` = `any` adds inactive entities for CO and CT only.
- **Up to 100,000 entities per run** (`maxResults` maximum). For more, split the work by date range or state.
- **Name and city filters are exact-text matches** on what the registry published. City names vary in spelling (e.g. "SanDimas"), so check a few spellings for complete results.
- Entity categories are derived by this Actor from each registry's type codes. Colorado sometimes appends the status to the name (e.g. "…, Delinquent August 1, 2025"); names are returned as published.
- Requests are paced at one per second (the portals' crawl delay), with up to 1,000 records each, so 10,000 entities take well under a minute.

### FAQ

**Do I need an API key?** No. The three open-data APIs are keyless.

**How fresh is the data?** Colorado and Connecticut update their datasets daily; New York publishes a monthly snapshot. Each row has `retrievedAt`, and `sourceRecordUrl` returns the record straight from the source.

**Can I get officers, owners or registered agents?** No. This Actor returns entity data only, by design.

**Why is the ZIP code empty for some rows?** The entity is a partnership or professional firm, or its name looks like a person's name. See Privacy.

**Is this the state's own service?** No. This is an independent tool that reads public open data. Unofficial. Not affiliated with or endorsed by the Colorado Department of State, the Connecticut Secretary of the State or the New York Department of State.

The dataset states no separate licence.

- **New York terms:** NY data is used under the OPEN-NY Terms of Use; if the State revokes access, NY will be dropped.

This Actor selects and renames fields and removes person, contact and street-address data; it does not change the remaining values. Unofficial. Not affiliated with or endorsed by the Colorado Department of State, the Connecticut Secretary of the State or the New York Department of State.
