# Bulk Domain WHOIS & RDAP Lookup: Age, Expiry, Registrar, DNS (`greentools/domain-whois-rdap-lookup`) Actor

Look up thousands of domains via official RDAP (the modern WHOIS): registrar, creation and expiry dates, domain age, days until expiry, status locks, nameservers, DNSSEC, availability, plus DNS records. Fast, cheap, no API key.

## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Bulk Domain WHOIS & RDAP Lookup: Age, Expiry, Registrar, Availability & DNS

Look up **hundreds or thousands of domains at once** and get clean, structured registration data: registrar, creation date, **domain age**, **expiry date and days until expiry**, status locks, nameservers, and DNSSEC. It also tells you whether each domain is **available to register**. You can optionally add live DNS records (A, AAAA, MX, NS, TXT, CNAME, SOA, CAA) in the same run.

The Actor uses **RDAP**, the official IETF/ICANN-standard replacement for WHOIS, querying each registry's own RDAP server through the IANA bootstrap registry. You get JSON-native, consistent data instead of fragile parsed WHOIS text, and you don't need an API key.

### Why this Actor

- **Fast:** 100 domains with DNS in about 40 seconds in our tests.
- **Consistent schema** across .com, .net, .org, .io, .co, .ai, .app, .dev, .uk, and hundreds of other TLDs.
- **Expiry monitoring built in:** filter to domains expiring within N days.
- **Availability check:** filter to unregistered domains only, which is ideal for brand-name and domain-investor workflows.
- **Thin-registry aware:** for .com/.net it also queries the registrar's RDAP server for extra detail.
- **Fair billing:** domains filtered out by your filters, and lookups that return nothing, are **not charged**.

### Use cases

- **Domain portfolio management:** track expiry dates and transfer locks across all your domains, and schedule a weekly run to get alerts.
- **Domain investing and brand naming:** bulk-check which name ideas are still available.
- **Lead scoring and fraud checks:** domain age is a strong trust signal, since newly registered domains are riskier.
- **Security and brand protection:** monitor look-alike domains, nameserver changes, and DNSSEC.
- **Sales enrichment:** add registrar, domain age, and email provider (from MX) to your lead lists.

### Input

```json
{
  "domains": ["stripe.com", "https://www.apify.com/store", "bbc.co.uk", "my-new-brand-idea.io"],
  "includeDns": true,
  "dnsRecordTypes": ["A", "AAAA", "MX", "NS", "TXT"],
  "resultFilter": "all",
  "expiringWithinDays": 0
}
```

| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| `domains` | Domains or URLs, one per line. Subdomains are reduced to the registrable domain (shop.lego.com → lego.com), and duplicates are removed. |
| `includeDns` / `dnsRecordTypes` | Fetch live DNS records via DNS-over-HTTPS. |
| `followRegistrar` | Also query the registrar's RDAP server for thin registries (.com/.net). |
| `resultFilter` | `all`, `registered`, or `available`. |
| `expiringWithinDays` | Only output domains expiring within N days (0 = off). |
| `maxConcurrency` | Parallel lookups (default 5, which keeps registries happy). |

### Output example

```json
{
  "domain": "stripe.com",
  "tld": "com",
  "isRegistered": true,
  "dataSource": "rdap",
  "registrar": "SafeNames Ltd.",
  "registrarIanaId": "447",
  "registrarUrl": "http://www.safenames.net",
  "registrarAbuseEmail": "abuse@safenames.net",
  "registrarAbusePhone": "+44.1908200022",
  "createdAt": "1995-09-12T04:00:00Z",
  "updatedAt": "2025-10-01T01:39:51Z",
  "expiresAt": "2027-09-11T04:00:00Z",
  "domainAgeDays": 11342,
  "daysUntilExpiry": 344,
  "status": ["client transfer prohibited", "server transfer prohibited", "…"],
  "transferLocked": true,
  "nameservers": ["ns-1087.awsdns-07.org", "ns-1882.awsdns-43.co.uk", "ns-423.awsdns-52.com", "ns-705.awsdns-24.net"],
  "dnssec": false,
  "dns": {
    "A": ["198.137.150.231", "198.202.176.231"],
    "MX": ["aspmx.l.google.com", "alt1.aspmx.l.google.com"],
    "NS": ["ns-1087.awsdns-07.org", "…"],
    "TXT": ["MS=ms80697640", "…"]
  },
  "rdapUrl": "https://rdap.verisign.com/com/v1/domain/stripe.com",
  "error": null,
  "checkedAt": "2026-10-02T00:17:28.485Z"
}
```

An unregistered domain returns `"isRegistered": false`.

### Pricing

You pay per domain looked up, with **no start fee**. See the Pricing tab for the current price. Domains removed by your filters, and lookups that return no data, are free. Set "Maximum cost per run" to cap spend.

### FAQ

**Why RDAP instead of WHOIS?**
ICANN made RDAP the authoritative source for gTLD registration data. It returns structured JSON with standardized fields, so you don't have to rely on fragile, registry-specific WHOIS text formats.

**Does it return the registrant's name, email, or address?**
No. Since GDPR, most registries redact registrant data. This Actor deliberately returns no personal contact data, only registrar-level (business) information.

**Which TLDs are supported?**
Every TLD whose registry publishes an RDAP service (all gTLDs such as .com/.net/.org/.app/.dev/.xyz, plus many ccTLDs including .uk, .ca, .au, .fr, .nl, .in, .br, .ai, .io, .co, .me, .us, .ly, and .so). For TLDs whose registry has no RDAP service (e.g. .de, .jp, .es, .it), you still get DNS records, and `isRegistered` is inferred from NS records (`dataSource: "dns"`).

**How accurate is "available"?**
`isRegistered: false` means the registry's own RDAP server has no record of the domain. Premium or reserved names may still be unavailable at a registrar, so always confirm at checkout.

**Can I monitor expiring domains automatically?**
Yes. Save your list, set `expiringWithinDays` (e.g. 60), create a weekly Schedule, and connect an email, Slack, or webhook integration.

# Actor input Schema

## `domains` (type: `array`):

One per line. Bare domains (example.com) or URLs. Subdomains are reduced to the registrable domain; duplicates are removed.

## `includeDns` (type: `boolean`):

Also fetch live DNS records for each domain (via DNS-over-HTTPS).

## `dnsRecordTypes` (type: `array`):

Which DNS record types to fetch.

## `followRegistrar` (type: `boolean`):

For thin registries (.com, .net) also query the registrar's RDAP server for extra detail (abuse contact, registrar status). Slightly slower.

## `resultFilter` (type: `string`):

Return all domains, only registered domains, or only available (unregistered) domains.

## `expiringWithinDays` (type: `integer`):

Keep only domains whose registration expires within N days. 0 = no filter. Filtered-out domains are not charged.

## `maxConcurrency` (type: `integer`):

Parallel lookups. Registries rate-limit aggressive clients; 5 is a safe default.
