# NASA FIRMS Active Fire Hotspots — PSPS / Wildfire AOI Watch (`grokbob/nasa-firms-active-fire-hotspots`) Actor

Near-real-time NASA FIRMS VIIRS/MODIS thermal hotspots for PSPS / wildfire bbox AOIs with KV watermark deltas. Emits firms-hotspot events. NOT WFIGS/NIFC/EFFIS incident perimeters. No MAP\_KEY required. From $0.40 per 1,000 successful AOI hotspot rows — empty/error/outside bbox cost $0.

## Pricing

from $0.40 / 1,000 successful aoi hotspot rows

This Actor is paid per event. You are not charged for the Apify platform usage, but only a fixed price for specific events.

## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## NASA FIRMS Active Fire Hotspots — PSPS / Wildfire AOI Watch

Near-real-time **NASA FIRMS** VIIRS / MODIS **thermal hotspots** for **your bbox AOIs**, with KV watermark **deltas**.

**Not WFIGS. Not NIFC. Not EFFIS.** This Actor does **not** scrape incident perimeter polygons. It reads the public FIRMS Global 24h/48h CSV products from `firms.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov`, filters to your watchlist, and emits normalized `firms-hotspot` events. No MAP\_KEY required for the CapEx path.

### Who it’s for

- Utility vegetation / **PSPS** desks watching transmission corridors
- CAT / insurance wildfire analysts watching portfolio counties
- Forestry / ESG / incident-intel contractors with park or concession buffers

### How it works

1. Requires one or more **AOIs** (`bbox` = `[west, south, east, north]` WGS84). Empty AOI is **rejected** — this is not a global CSV dump.
2. Sequentially fetches selected sensors (default **VIIRS NOAA-20** + **VIIRS SNPP**; optional **MODIS**) for a **24h or 48h** window with an honest `grokbob/nasa-firms-active-fire-hotspots/...` User-Agent, polite gaps, Retry-After / 429–5xx backoff.
3. Stream-parses CSV rows → keeps only points inside your AOIs → optional FRP / confidence / `since` filters.
4. **KV delta**: persist last-seen `hotspotId` (`satellite|acqDate|acqTime|lat|lon`). Emit `changeType` = `new` | `seen`. With `deltaOnly=true` (default), skip seen.
5. PPE: charge **`firms-hotspot`** only per successful AOI-matching row. Empty / error / outside bbox = **$0**.

### Input

| Field | Default | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `aois` | **required** | Array of `{ aoiId?, label?, bbox }` — minItems 1 |
| `sensors` | `["VIIRS_NOAA20","VIIRS_SNPP"]` | Also `MODIS` |
| `windowHours` | `24` | `24` or `48` |
| `since` | *(empty)* | ISO datetime watermark |
| `deltaOnly` | `true` | Skip KV-seen rows |
| `maxEvents` | `5000` | Hard cap |
| `minFrpMw` | *(none)* | Optional FRP floor |
| `confidence` | `[]` | e.g. `nominal`, `high` |
| `dryRunMock` | `false` | Local/CI mock |

### Output

Dataset items shaped as **`firms-hotspot`**:

- hotspotId, lat/lon, sensor, satellite, acqDate, acqTimeUtc, acquiredAt
- brightness fields (VIIRS Ti4/Ti5 or MODIS brightness/T31), frpMw, confidence, daynight
- aoiId / aoiLabel / bbox, windowHours, changeType, sourceUrl, observedAt

Plus an optional `firms-aoi-delta-run` summary row (unbilled).

### Pricing

**Pay per event:** **$0.0004** per successful `firms-hotspot` (**$0.40 / 1,000** AOI-matching hotspot rows). Empty / error / outside bbox / blocked = **$0**. Platform also bills a standard `apify-actor-start` fee. Meta `firms-aoi-delta-run` (if emitted) is **unbilled**.

### Explicit NOT

- **NOT** WFIGS / NIFC / EFFIS incident **perimeters**
- **NOT** InciWeb incident pages
- **NOT** NASA EONET multi-hazard catalog
- **NOT** “download whole Global\_24h.csv” mirror theater

### CapEx path

Published CSVs under `https://firms.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/data/active_fire/...` — no key, no residential proxy.

# Actor input Schema

## `aois` (type: `array`):

One or more AOIs: { aoiId?, label?, bbox: \[west, south, east, north] }. Required (minItems 1). Empty AOI is invalid — no global CSV dump.

## `sensors` (type: `array`):

FIRMS sensors to fetch. Default VIIRS NOAA-20 + SNPP. Allowed: VIIRS\_NOAA20, VIIRS\_SNPP, MODIS.

## `windowHours` (type: `integer`):

FIRMS Global CSV window hours. Use 24 or 48 (validated at run).

## `since` (type: `string`):

ISO datetime. Emit changeType=new for detections after this instant / unseen hotspotId. Empty = AOI snapshot in window (still AOI-filtered).

## `deltaOnly` (type: `boolean`):

When true, skip changeType=seen rows already in KV watermark.

## `maxEvents` (type: `integer`):

Hard cap on firms-hotspot rows pushed this run.

## `minFrpMw` (type: `number`):

Optional minimum fire radiative power in MW. Leave empty for no FRP floor.

## `confidence` (type: `array`):

VIIRS: nominal/high/low. MODIS: numeric threshold strings. Empty = all.

## `dryRunMock` (type: `boolean`):

Use in-memory mock hotspots — no live FIRMS GET.
