## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Domain SEO Overview: Website Traffic, Keywords & Competitors

**An SEO snapshot of any website in one call.** Give it a domain and get its estimated Google organic traffic, how many keywords it ranks for, what that traffic is worth, its top ranking keywords with positions, and the websites competing for the same keywords.

It is the domain overview you know from Ahrefs or Semrush, without a subscription, as clean JSON. Works for 94 countries. Sized for AI agents and for bulk lists alike.

### What you can ask it

- "How much organic traffic does stripe.com get from Google, and what is it worth?"
- "What are the top 20 keywords notion.so ranks for in the US?"
- "Who are the organic competitors of linear.app?"
- "Compare the SEO strength of these 30 prospects before a sales call."
- "Is this website gaining or losing rankings?"

### Input

Only `domains` is required.

| Field | Type | Default | Description |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `domains` | array of strings | *required* | Websites to analyze, for example `stripe.com`. Full URLs are reduced to the domain. Up to 100 per run. |
| `country` | string | `US` | Two-letter country code. 94 countries supported. |
| `language` | string | country's main language | Language code, for countries with several languages. |
| `top_keywords` | integer | `20` | Ranking keywords to return per domain (organic top 20 positions, highest search volume first). `0` skips this lookup. Max 1000. |
| `competitors` | integer | `10` | Organic competitors to return per domain. `0` skips this lookup. Max 100. |

#### Example: quick overview only (cheapest)

```json
{
    "domains": ["stripe.com", "adyen.com", "checkout.com"],
    "top_keywords": 0,
    "competitors": 0
}
```

#### Example: full snapshot of one site

```json
{
    "domains": ["notion.so"],
    "top_keywords": 50,
    "competitors": 10
}
```

### Output

Three kinds of records, told apart by `record_type`.

#### `domain_overview` — one per domain

```json
{
    "record_type": "domain_overview",
    "domain": "example.com",
    "country": "US",
    "language": "en",
    "has_data": true,
    "organic_traffic_estimate": 3056,
    "organic_keywords": 1788,
    "organic_traffic_value_usd": 15079,
    "keywords_top_3": 39,
    "keywords_top_10": 139,
    "keywords_top_20": 274,
    "keywords_new": 661,
    "keywords_up": 757,
    "keywords_down": 418,
    "keywords_lost": 547,
    "paid_keywords": 11,
    "paid_traffic_estimate": 32,
    "note": null
}
```

#### `ranked_keyword` — the keywords the domain ranks for

```json
{
    "record_type": "ranked_keyword",
    "domain": "example.com",
    "keyword": "online payments",
    "position": 3,
    "url": "https://example.com/payments",
    "search_volume": 14800,
    "cpc_usd": 6.4,
    "keyword_difficulty": 71,
    "search_intent": "commercial",
    "traffic_estimate": 1420
}
```

#### `competitor` — websites ranking for the same keywords

```json
{
    "record_type": "competitor",
    "domain": "example.com",
    "competitor_domain": "rival.com",
    "shared_keywords": 512,
    "competitor_avg_position": 14.3,
    "competitor_organic_traffic_estimate": 90000,
    "competitor_organic_keywords": 12000
}
```

A small run summary is saved to the key-value store under `OUTPUT`, with an `outcome` field: `COMPLETE`, `NO_DATA`, `PARTIAL_SPENDING_LIMIT`, `SPENDING_LIMIT_TOO_LOW`, `PARTIAL_PROVIDER_ERROR` or `FREE_PLAN_LIMITED`.

### Pricing

Pay per event. Platform usage is included.

| Event | Price | When |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `domain-lookup` | $0.02 | Each lookup sent to the SEO database: one for the overview, one for keywords, one for competitors. |
| `domain-result` | $0.005 | Each returned record with data. |
| `apify-actor-start` | $0.00005 | Once per run. |

Examples: an overview of one domain costs $0.025. An overview with 20 keywords and 10 competitors costs $0.215.

- A domain with no ranking data is charged one lookup and no result. The keyword and competitor lookups are skipped for it.
- A lookup that fails on our side is **not charged**.
- Set a maximum cost per run and the Actor requests only what that limit can pay for, then stops cleanly.

#### Free Apify plan

Try it for free. Each free run returns the real traffic overview of your **first domain**, marked with a `note`. Ranking keywords, competitors and more domains are available on **paid Apify plans**, because every lookup has a real data cost. The free preview depends on availability and can be paused at times; when it is paused, the run returns one record per domain without metrics. Nothing is charged on the free plan.

### Use from AI agents (MCP)

Connect the [Apify MCP server](https://mcp.apify.com) with this Actor enabled:

```
https://mcp.apify.com?tools=hirepulse/domain-seo-overview
```

Tips for agents:

- For a quick comparison of many sites set `top_keywords` and `competitors` to `0`: one small record per domain.
- Check `has_data` on each overview, and read `OUTPUT.outcome` to know whether the run was complete.
- Traffic figures are estimates from rankings and search volume. Present them as estimates.

### Data source and accuracy

Data comes from the DataForSEO Labs database of Google results, refreshed regularly. Organic traffic is **estimated** from each keyword's position, search volume and typical click-through rate. It is useful for comparing websites and spotting trends, and it will differ from a site's own analytics.

### Limitations

- Google only. No Bing or YouTube data.
- No backlink data: this is an overview of rankings and traffic, not of links.
- Country-level data. Results depend on the selected country and language.
- Small or new websites may have no ranking data yet.
- The top keywords list covers organic positions 1 to 20.
