## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## SEC EDGAR Filings Scraper — full-text search, no key

**Search every public company's SEC filings by keyword — no login, no browser.** Reads EDGAR's
own official full-text search API. Turn on incremental mode and every run after the first returns
only filings new since the previous one, for that exact search.

**$0.80 per 1,000 rows.** No start fee.

### What you get

One row per filing: `accessionNumber`, `form`, `fileDate`, `periodEnding`, `cik`, `companyNames`,
`fileType`, `fileDescription`, `bizLocations`, `bizStates`, `sics`, and `filingUrl`.

### The one real requirement: identify yourself

The SEC blocks a request with no `User-Agent` at all outright (measured directly - HTTP 403,
cold). This Actor sends a reasonable default; SEC's own developer guidance asks for a real
contact string as a fair-access courtesy for a free service funded to serve everyone, so you can
supply your own via **User-Agent** in input if you'd rather.

### Incremental mode, and the boundary-day guard it actually needs

EDGAR's date filter has no time-of-day at all - just a calendar date. That makes the
same-day-re-fetch problem sharper here than anywhere else in this developer's portfolio: without
a guard, every filing from today would be re-billed on every run made today. This Actor remembers
the ids it has already billed for the current boundary day and skips them - verified live: a
second run partway through the same day correctly recognized several already-billed filings and
charged only the new ones.

### Input at a glance

| Input | Default | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| `query` | — | required; a keyword or quoted phrase |
| `forms` | — | e.g. `10-K`, `10-Q`, `8-K`; leave empty for all forms |
| `mode` | `all` | `all` or `changes` |
| `postedSince` | 7 days | `all` mode only |
| `maxItems` | `200` | cost cap — billed once per row saved |
| `firstRunSince` | `7 days` | `changes` mode only; `"all"` backfills to 2001 |
| `userAgent` | — | optional; a reasonable default is sent otherwise |

### Billing

Pay per event, charged once per filing row saved, **no start fee**:

| Event | Price | When |
|---|---|---|
| `filing-scraped` | $0.0008 | one filing row |

Set `maxItems` as your cost cap.

# Actor input Schema

## `query` (type: `string`):

A keyword or quoted phrase to search EDGAR filings full text for, e.g. "climate risk" or "supply chain disruption".

## `forms` (type: `array`):

Limit to these form types, e.g. 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K, S-1. Leave empty for all forms.

## `mode` (type: `string`):

"all": every matching filing in the window. "changes": only filings new since your last run for this exact query/forms source.

## `postedSince` (type: `string`):

Date or span, e.g. "7 days" or "2026-01-01". Defaults to 7 days if left blank.

## `maxItems` (type: `integer`):

Cost cap - you're billed once per row saved.

## `firstRunSince` (type: `string`):

A source's first incremental run only takes filings from since this date/span. Default "7 days"; "all" backfills to 2001 (EDGAR full-text search's own coverage start).

## `userAgent` (type: `string`):

SEC asks callers to identify themselves with a real contact - e.g. "MyCompany research@example.com". A reasonable default is sent if left blank.

## `maxRetries` (type: `integer`):

Retries with backoff for network errors and 5xx responses.

## `stateStoreName` (type: `string`):

Name of the key-value store (in YOUR account) that holds the high-water mark per source. Leave blank for the default.

## `stateNamespace` (type: `string`):

Advanced: an explicit namespace for the mark key. Leave blank to namespace by your Apify user id automatically.
