# RSS & Atom Feed Reader – Bulk Feeds to JSON with Auto-Discovery (`iamshytv/rss-feed-reader`) Actor

Read hundreds of RSS, Atom and JSON feeds in one run and get clean JSON/CSV items: title, link, date, summary, categories, podcast enclosures. Paste website URLs and the feed is auto-discovered. Filter by date or keyword, dedupe across scheduled runs for news monitoring.

## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## RSS & Atom Feed Reader – Bulk RSS to JSON with Auto-Discovery

Read **hundreds of RSS, Atom and JSON Feed sources in one run** and get clean, uniform JSON/CSV: title, link, published date (ISO 8601), plain-text summary, categories, podcast enclosure (audio URL) and feed name. Paste **website URLs** and the feed is auto-discovered. Filter by **date** and **keyword**, and enable **dedupe across runs** so a daily schedule outputs only new items. Fast HTTP, no browser.

### Use cases

- **News & brand monitoring** – track competitor blogs, industry news, press releases, government feeds.
- **AI / RAG pipelines** – feed fresh articles into LLM summarisation, Slack/Discord digests, newsletters.
- **Podcast monitoring** – collect new episodes with audio enclosure URLs.
- **Content aggregation** – build a niche news site or dashboard from many sources.
- **Release tracking** – GitHub `releases.atom`, changelogs, status pages.

### Features

- RSS 0.9x/2.0, RDF/RSS 1.0, Atom 1.0 and JSON Feed 1.x in one normalised schema
- Feed auto-discovery from `<link rel="alternate">` and common paths (`/feed`, `/rss.xml`, `/atom.xml`…)
- Date filter, keyword filter (title, summary, categories), optional full content text
- **Only new items** mode: remembers item IDs between scheduled runs (you don't pay twice)
- Parallel fetching with retries, backoff and `Retry-After` support; per-feed error report

### Input example

```json
{
  "feedUrls": ["https://hnrss.org/frontpage", "https://blog.cloudflare.com", "https://github.com/nodejs/node/releases.atom"],
  "maxItemsPerFeed": 50,
  "publishedAfter": "2026-10-01",
  "keywords": ["AI", "security"],
  "dedupeAcrossRuns": true
}
```

### Output example

```json
{
  "title": "Show HN: Corgi, a helpful {agent, terminal} multiplexer",
  "link": "https://corgi.computer/",
  "guid": "https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50214373",
  "published": "2026-10-23T19:46:38.000Z",
  "summary": "Hey everyone, Inspired by Herdr, I've built an agent multiplexer…",
  "categories": [],
  "enclosureUrl": null,
  "feedTitle": "Hacker News: Front Page",
  "feedUrl": "https://hnrss.org/frontpage",
  "feedType": "rss"
}
```

### Pricing

Pay per event: **$2.00 per 1,000 feed items** returned. With *Only new items* enabled, repeat runs only charge for new items.

### Use with AI agents (MCP)

Available as a tool via the [Apify MCP server](https://mcp.apify.com): `https://mcp.apify.com?tools=<username>/rss-feed-reader`.

### FAQ

**Website has no feed?** It's reported in `RUN_SUMMARY.errors`; nothing is charged.
**Author names?** Not collected – output is limited to publication metadata and summaries published in the feed.

# Actor input Schema

## `feedUrls` (type: `array`):

RSS/Atom/JSON feed URLs, or plain website URLs (the feed is auto-discovered from <link rel=alternate> or common paths like /feed).

## `maxItemsPerFeed` (type: `integer`):

Newest items first, as listed by the feed.

## `publishedAfter` (type: `string`):

YYYY-MM-DD. Items without a date are skipped when set.

## `keywords` (type: `array`):

Keep items whose title, summary or categories contain at least one keyword (case-insensitive).

## `includeContent` (type: `boolean`):

Adds the full article text from content:encoded / Atom content when the feed provides it.

## `dedupeAcrossRuns` (type: `boolean`):

Remembers item IDs in a named key-value store so scheduled runs only output (and charge for) new items.

## `maxConcurrency` (type: `integer`):

How many feeds to fetch at once.

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "feedUrls": [
    "https://hnrss.org/frontpage",
    "https://blog.cloudflare.com",
    "https://www.nasa.gov/feed/"
  ],
  "maxItemsPerFeed": 50,
  "keywords": [],
  "includeContent": false,
  "dedupeAcrossRuns": false,
  "maxConcurrency": 5
}
```

# Actor output Schema

## `results` (type: `string`):

Feed items from all input feeds (title, link, date, summary, categories, enclosures). Stored in the run's default dataset.

## `runSummary` (type: `string`):

JSON record RUN_SUMMARY in the default key-value store: counts and any per-input errors.

# API

You can run this Actor programmatically using our API. Below are code examples in JavaScript, Python, and CLI, as well as the OpenAPI specification and MCP server setup.

## JavaScript example

```javascript
import { ApifyClient } from 'apify-client';
// Initialize the ApifyClient with your Apify API token
// Replace the '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>' with your token
const client = new ApifyClient({
    token: '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>',
});
// Prepare Actor input
const input = {
    ]
};
// Run the Actor and wait for it to finish
const run = await client.actor("iamshytv/rss-feed-reader").call(input);
// Fetch and print Actor results from the run's dataset (if any)
console.log('Results from dataset');
console.log(`💾 Check your data here: https://console.apify.com/storage/datasets/${run.defaultDatasetId}`);
const { items } = await client.dataset(run.defaultDatasetId).listItems();
items.forEach((item) => {
    console.dir(item);
});
