## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Grants.gov Federal Grant Opportunities Tracker (No API Key)

Find **open and forecasted US federal grant opportunities** (FOAs / NOFOs / RFAs) from the official, keyless **Grants.gov** APIs (`Search2` + `fetchOpportunity`). No signup, no API key.

You get one clean, flattened row per opportunity — agency, dates, award ceiling/floor, CFDA numbers and titles, eligibility, contacts and a direct Grants.gov link — ready for a CRM, spreadsheet or alerting workflow.

**Use cases**

- **Grant seekers & proposal shops:** watch newly posted FOAs by keyword (e.g. `cybersecurity`, `workforce`, `rural health`) every day and route them to writers.
- **Universities & research offices:** track NIH / NSF / DOE / NEH postings with award ceilings and CFDA programs before the close date.
- **Nonprofits & state/local governments:** filter by eligibility and funding category to surface fits for your applicant type.
- **Consultants & capture teams:** monitor forecasted opportunities early, then pair winners later with spending data.
- **Journalism & policy research:** see what agencies are funding right now, with estimated totals and number of awards.

Pairs well with:

- **USASpending Federal Awards Tracker** — who actually got paid (past awards)
- **SAM.gov Federal Contract Opportunities Tracker** — contract bids (procurement), not grants

### Input

- **Keyword:** full-text search, e.g. `cybersecurity`, `artificial intelligence`.
- **Opportunity number:** exact FOA / RFA id, e.g. `RFA-LM-28-001`.
- **Statuses:** `posted` (default), `forecasted`, `closed`, `archived` (joined with `|` for Search2).
- **Agencies / funding instruments / eligibilities / funding categories:** optional pass-through strings as Grants.gov Search2 expects them.
- **Sort:** open date, close date, opportunity number, or relevance.
- **Max opportunities** (1–1,000, default 50).
- **Enrich details** (default true): call `fetchOpportunity` per hit for ceiling/floor, eligibility, CFDA titles, contacts and description. When false, search-level fields only; detail fields are null.
- **User-Agent contact.**

Example input:

```json
{
  "keyword": "cybersecurity",
  "oppStatuses": ["posted"],
  "sortBy": "openDate|desc",
  "maxResults": 25,
  "enrichDetails": true
}
```

### Output (one item per opportunity)

| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| `opportunityId`, `opportunityNumber`, `title` | Opportunity identity |
| `agency`, `agencyCode` | Funding agency |
| `oppStatus`, `docType` | posted / forecasted / closed / archived |
| `openDate`, `closeDate`, `archiveDate` | Key dates |
| `awardCeiling`, `awardFloor`, `estimatedFunding`, `numberOfAwards`, `costSharing` | Award economics (enriched) |
| `cfdaNumbers`, `cfdaTitles` | Assistance listing numbers and program titles |
| `fundingInstruments`, `fundingCategories`, `applicantTypes` | Joined labels (enriched) |
| `eligibilitySummary`, `descriptionSnippet` | Trimmed text (HTML stripped on description) |
| `agencyContactName`, `agencyContactEmail`, `agencyContactPhone` | Agency contacts (enriched) |
| `fundingDescUrl`, `sourceUrl` | Full FOA link (when provided) and Grants.gov detail page |

Example (from a real run): `RFA-LM-28-001` — *NLM Institutional Grants for Research Training in Biomedical Informatics, Data Science, and AI*, National Institutes of Health, award ceiling $775,000, estimated funding $17,100,000.

### Compliance

- Uses only the official public Grants.gov APIs (`POST https://api.grants.gov/v1/api/search2` and `fetchOpportunity`), with anonymous access, no login and no API key.
- Data is public US federal grant opportunity information published by Grants.gov.
- Requests are politely throttled to about 1 per second, back off on 429 and 5xx responses, and send a declared User-Agent.
- No anti-bot measures are bypassed and nothing is scraped from behind a login.

### Pricing (pay per event)

| Event | Price |
|---|---|
| `apify-actor-start` (synthetic) | default $0.00005 |
| `opportunity-result` (one opportunity pushed) | **$0.002** ($2 per 1,000 opportunities) |

The code calls `Actor.charge(event_name="opportunity-result")` after each pushed opportunity and stops when your max charge is reached.
