## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Income by ZIP Code (IRS Tax Data API)

Get official income statistics for any US ZIP code from the IRS Statistics of Income program: number of tax returns, average adjusted gross income, the income-bracket mix, wages and retiree share. Look up a list of ZIPs, or pull a whole state at once.

### Who uses this

- **Local businesses and franchise scouts** picking a trade area or a new location
- **Real-estate investors and agents** comparing neighborhoods
- **Marketers** building direct-mail or ad lists by income band
- **Analysts and AI agents** that need a clean income field for a ZIP

### Why this Actor

- **Official source:** the IRS's own ZIP code file (tax years 2020 to 2022), not modelled estimates.
- **One clean row per ZIP:** totals plus the share under $25k and over $100k, and the median income bracket.
- **Bracket mode:** set `mode` to `brackets` for one row per income band per ZIP.
- **Pay only for results.** No subscription, no proxy, no login.

### Input example

```json
{ "taxYear": "2022", "zipCodes": ["77459", "77002", "78701", "10001", "90210"], "mode": "summary" }
```

Leave `zipCodes` empty and set `states` (for example `["TX"]`) to pull every ZIP in a state.

### Output example

```json
{ "taxYear": 2022, "state": "CA", "zip": "90210", "returns": 9030, "avgAgi": 664871.87, "medianAgiBracket": "$100k–$200k", "wageEarners": 5780, "elderlyReturns": 3600, "shareOver100k": 0.5615, "shareUnder25k": 0.1894 }
```

### FAQ

**Is this household income?** It's income per tax return, which is close but not the same as household income. It's the most precise official figure published at ZIP level.
**How current is it?** Tax year 2022 is the latest ZIP release from the IRS. The Actor picks up new years when the IRS publishes them.
**Can I use it from ChatGPT or Claude?** Yes, it's also one of the tools in the Public Data MCP server.
