## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## App Store Top Charts — rankings by country & category

Get the **Apple App Store top charts** — **Top Free, Top Paid and Top Grossing, for iPhone and iPad** — for **any country and any category**, and enrich every ranked app with its **rating, number of ratings, price, genres, version, size, content rating and release / last-update dates**. Run it on a schedule to **track app ranks across countries** over time.

No browser, no login, no API key: it uses Apple's public chart feeds and the iTunes Lookup API, so a full top-100 across several countries takes seconds.

### What it does

- **6 charts**: `top-free`, `top-paid`, `top-grossing` and their `-ipad` versions.
- **Any App Store country**: `us`, `gb`, `de`, `fr`, `jp`, `br`, `in`, `kr`… — every chart is fetched for every country you list.
- **Categories**: overall charts or any App Store category (Games, Productivity, Health & Fitness, Finance, Photo & Video…) including game subcategories (Puzzle, Role Playing, Strategy…).
- **Top 100 per chart** (Apple publishes 100 ranks).
- **Enrichment** via the iTunes Lookup API, batched (one request per 100 apps): rating, rating count, price, currency, all genres, version, size, content rating, minimum iOS, release date, last update date, optional description.
- **Resilient**: retries with exponential backoff on rate limits and server errors; if the classic chart feed fails, iPhone free/paid charts fall back to Apple's newer marketing-tools feed. A bad country code produces an error item; the run continues.

### Use cases

- **ASO & app marketers** — daily rank tracking for your app and competitors in every market.
- **Mobile game studios** — watch the grossing and category charts, spot breakout titles early.
- **Investors & analysts** — category trends, which publishers dominate which countries.
- **Agencies** — country-by-country market snapshots for pitches and reports.
- **Lead generation** — find fast-rising developers (developer name and id are included).

### Input

| Field | Type | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| `countries` | list of strings | `["us"]` | 2-letter country codes |
| `charts` | list | `["top-free"]` | `top-free`, `top-paid`, `top-grossing`, `top-free-ipad`, `top-paid-ipad`, `top-grossing-ipad` |
| `categories` | list of strings | empty (overall) | Category names (`Games`, `Health & Fitness`, `games-puzzle`), genre ids (`6014`) or `all` for the overall chart |
| `limit` | integer | `100` | Apps per chart, 1–100 |
| `enrich` | boolean | `true` | Add details from the iTunes Lookup API |
| `includeDescription` | boolean | `false` | Add the full App Store description |

```json
{
  "countries": ["us", "gb", "de", "jp"],
  "charts": ["top-free", "top-paid", "top-grossing"],
  "categories": ["all", "Games"],
  "limit": 100,
  "enrich": true
}
```

That input fetches 4 × 3 × 2 = 24 charts (≈2,400 rows) in about 20 seconds.

<details><summary>All category names</summary>

books, business, catalogs, developer-tools, education, entertainment, finance, food-drink, games, graphics-design, health-fitness, lifestyle, magazines-newspapers, medical, music, navigation, news, photo-video, productivity, reference, shopping, social-networking, sports, stickers, travel, utilities, weather — and game subcategories: games-action, games-adventure, games-casual, games-board, games-card, games-casino, games-dice, games-educational, games-family, games-music, games-puzzle, games-racing, games-role-playing, games-simulation, games-sports, games-strategy, games-trivia, games-word. Display names like "Health & Fitness" work too.

</details>

### Output

One row per app per chart:

```json
{
  "country": "us",
  "chart": "top-free",
  "category": "games",
  "categoryId": 6014,
  "rank": 1,
  "appId": "6761760135",
  "bundleId": "com.oakever.meowdoku",
  "name": "Meowdoku!",
  "developer": "Oakever Games",
  "developerId": 1658671470,
  "genre": "Games",
  "genres": ["Games", "Casual", "Puzzle"],
  "rating": 4.81,
  "ratingCount": 268652,
  "price": 0,
  "currency": "USD",
  "formattedPrice": "Free",
  "url": "https://apps.apple.com/us/app/meowdoku/id6761760135",
  "artwork": "https://is1-ssl.mzstatic.com/image/thumb/Purple211/v4/bb/92/ba/.../512x512bb.jpg",
  "releaseDate": "2026-05-19T07:00:00Z",
  "currentVersionReleaseDate": "2026-09-20T10:34:12Z",
  "version": "1.18.0",
  "sizeBytes": 389756928,
  "contentRating": "12+",
  "minimumOsVersion": "15.0",
  "source": "itunes-rss",
  "scrapedAt": "2026-10-01T01:43:58.028Z"
}
```

- `category` / `categoryId` are `null` for the overall chart.
- `rating` is the average star rating (0–5) in that country, `ratingCount` the number of ratings there.
- With `enrich: false` you still get rank, app id, bundle id, name, developer, primary genre, price, URL, icon and release date from the chart feed.
- `source` is `itunes-rss` normally, `marketing-tools-rss` when the fallback feed was used (fewer fields before enrichment).

#### Error item

```json
{ "country": "zz", "chart": "top-free", "category": null, "categoryId": null, "errorType": "INVALID_COUNTRY", "error": "App Store country \"zz\" not found (HTTP 400)" }
```

`errorType` is `INVALID_COUNTRY` or `FETCH_FAILED`. Error items are never charged.

### Rank tracking

Schedule the Actor (Apify Console → Schedules), e.g. daily, with the same input. Every row carries `country`, `chart`, `category`, `rank`, `appId` and `scrapedAt`, so you can load all runs' datasets into a sheet or database and chart rank history per app and country.

### Pricing

Pay-per-event:

- **Actor start** — small fixed fee per run.
- **`app-result`** — per app row in the output (one app in 3 charts = 3 rows).

Set a maximum cost per run and the Actor stops cleanly once it is reached.

### FAQ

**Why fewer than 100 apps in a chart?** Apple occasionally publishes 97–99 entries, and small categories in small countries can have short charts.

**How fresh are the charts?** Apple updates the chart feeds several times a day; each run returns the current state.

**Are ratings worldwide?** No — ratings and prices are per country storefront, matching the chart's country.

**Do I need proxies?** No. The Actor makes one request per chart plus one lookup per 100 apps.

**Google Play?** Not covered by this Actor.

# Actor input Schema

## `countries` (type: `array`):

2-letter App Store country codes (ISO 3166-1 alpha-2), e.g. us, gb, de, fr, jp, br, in. Every chart is fetched for every country — great for multi-country rank tracking.

## `charts` (type: `array`):

Which top charts to fetch.

## `categories` (type: `array`):

Optional. Leave empty for the overall charts. Use names like "Games", "Productivity", "Health & Fitness", "Photo & Video", "Finance", game subcategories like "games-puzzle", "games-role-playing", or numeric App Store genre ids (6014). Add "all" to also get the overall chart.

## `limit` (type: `integer`):

How many ranks to fetch per chart (Apple publishes the top 100).

## `enrich` (type: `boolean`):

Add rating, rating count, price, all genres, version, size, content rating, release dates via the iTunes Lookup API (one extra request per 100 apps). Recommended.

## `includeDescription` (type: `boolean`):

Add the full App Store description (requires enrichment). Off by default to keep results small.
