## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## IRS Tax-Exempt Organization Search - EIN, Name, Type

Check whether a US organization is in the IRS list of tax-exempt organizations, and see how the IRS classifies it. Give an **EIN** or an **organization name** and get one record per organization from the official IRS **Exempt Organizations Business Master File Extract (EO BMF)**. No scraping, no API key.

This is a verification tool, not a mailing list: **street addresses, "in care of" names (which can be a person), and exact dollar amounts are deliberately not returned.**

### Input (all optional)

| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| `eins` | 9-digit EINs, with or without the hyphen. Exact lookup. Up to 200. |
| `names` | Words to find in the organization name or its secondary name line (case and punctuation ignored, whole words in order, at least 3 letters/digits). Up to 20. |
| `state` | Two-letter filing-address state. Applies to name searches and makes them much faster (only that state's file is read). |
| `nteeCodes` | Keep organizations whose NTEE code starts with one of these (e.g. `B`, `P20`). Name searches only. |
| `status` | IRS exempt status code filter (`01`, `02`, `12`, `25`). Name searches only. |
| `maxResultsPerTerm` | Records returned per name (1-100, default 10). Exact name matches come first. |

With no input the Actor looks up an example EIN (53-0196605).

### Output (one row per organization, or per input not found)

`ein`, `name`, `secondaryName`, `city`, `state`, `zip5`, `subsectionCode` / `subsection` (e.g. 501(c)(3)), `exemptStatus`, `rulingDate`, `foundation` (public charity / private foundation type), `deductibility`, `affiliation`, `organizationType`, `groupExemptionNumber`, `nteeCode` / `nteeMajorGroup`, `assetCode` / `assetRange`, `incomeCode` / `incomeRange`, `filingRequirement`, `pfFilingRequirement`, `latestReturnTaxPeriod`, `matchType`, `totalMatchesForQuery`, `source`, `dataAsOf` (date the IRS posted the file), `disclaimer`.

Inputs with no match return `found: false` and are free. If an IRS file could not be downloaded, the affected inputs return `found: null` with an `error` field - this does **not** mean the organization is absent - and name results carry `sectionErrors`.

### Important limits

- The IRS file is updated monthly. Organizations whose exemption was **revoked are removed** from it, and churches and self-declared organizations may be absent. Not finding an organization is **not proof** that it is not tax-exempt. Always confirm with the official IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search before relying on a record.
- State is the filing address, which may differ from where the organization operates.
- Asset and income are IRS range codes from the latest Form 990-series return, not exact figures.
- Name matching is word-based on the registered name; a "doing business as" name may not be listed.

### Speed

An EIN lookup reads the IRS region files until the EIN is found (about 10-20 seconds). A name search reads all four region files (about 2 million records, about 20 seconds) or, with `state`, one state file (a few seconds). The data is streamed and filtered, so memory use stays small.

### Pricing event

`org-record` - one event per organization record returned.

# Actor input Schema

## `eins` (type: `array`):

9-digit Employer Identification Numbers, with or without the hyphen, for example 53-0196605. Up to 200.

## `state` (type: `string`):

Two-letter code of the filing-address state, for example CA. Applies to name searches; it also makes them much faster. Leave empty for all states.

## `nteeCodes` (type: `array`):

Keep only organizations whose NTEE code starts with one of these, for example B (education) or P20. Applies to name searches.

## `status` (type: `string`):

Filter name searches by the IRS exempt-organization status code.

## `maxResultsPerTerm` (type: `integer`):

Upper limit of organization records returned for each name. You are charged per organization record returned.
