## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## EU Company Verifier – VAT (VIES) + LEI (GLEIF)

Verify a company in one call: check **EU VAT numbers** against the official **VIES** service and look up **LEI (Legal Entity Identifier)** records from **GLEIF**. Returns one clean JSON record per query – easy to use from code, spreadsheets, no-code tools and AI agents (MCP).

### What you get

- **VAT check** (VIES): valid / invalid / temporarily unavailable, registered name and address as returned by the member state.
- **LEI lookup** (GLEIF): LEI, legal name, status, legal form, legal & HQ address, registration authority ID, renewal dates.
- **Honest matching:** a LEI is only reported as `bestMatch` if the legal name matches exactly after normalisation; similar names are listed as candidates only (`matchType`).
- **Clear statuses:** `VAT_VALID`, `VAT_INVALID`, `VAT_CHECK_UNAVAILABLE`, `BAD_INPUT`, `LEI_FOUND`, `LEI_CANDIDATES_ONLY`, `LEI_NOT_FOUND`, `LOOKUP_ERROR`.

### Input

| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| `vatNumbers` | e.g. `NL820646660B01`, `DE811115368`, `EL094259216` (Greece = EL; Northern Ireland = XI) |
| `companies` | `[{"name": "Siemens Aktiengesellschaft", "country": "DE"}]` |
| `leis` | 20-character LEI codes |
| `maxLeiMatches` | 1–10 candidates per name lookup (default 3) |

### Example output (abridged)

```json
{ "query": "NL820646660B01", "status": "VAT_VALID",
  "vies": { "valid": true, "name": "ABN AMRO BANK N.V.", "address": "GUSTAV MAHLERLAAN 00010, 1082PP AMSTERDAM" },
  "gleif": { "bestMatch": { "lei": "BFXS5XCH7N0Y05NIXW11", "legalName": "ABN AMRO Bank N.V.", "status": "ACTIVE" } } }
```

### Good to know (limits)

- VIES depends on each member state's service. Some (notably Germany at times) are temporarily unavailable; the actor retries and then returns `VAT_CHECK_UNAVAILABLE` – **that is not a statement that the VAT number is invalid.**
- VIES does not return a name/address for every country. A VAT number being valid does not by itself verify who you are dealing with.
- Not every company has a LEI.
- Informational tool only; not legal, tax or compliance advice. Keep your own records for audit purposes (VIES offers official confirmation certificates).
- Not affiliated with, endorsed or supported by the European Commission or GLEIF.

### Data sources

- VIES: European Commission VAT Information Exchange System (public REST service).
- GLEIF: Global LEI Foundation, data under CC0 1.0.

### Pricing

Pay per event: one `company-check` event per query (price set in Apify Console).

# Actor input Schema

## `vatNumbers` (type: `array`):

EU VAT numbers including the 2-letter country prefix, e.g. DE811115368, NL820646660B01, EL094259216 (Greece uses EL), XI for Northern Ireland. Each is checked against the official EU VIES service; if VIES returns a company name, a matching LEI is looked up in GLEIF.

## `companies` (type: `array`):

Look up LEI records by legal name. Each item: {"name": "Siemens Aktiengesellschaft", "country": "DE"}. 'country' is the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code and is optional but strongly recommended.

## `leis` (type: `array`):

20-character Legal Entity Identifiers to fetch directly from GLEIF.

## `maxLeiMatches` (type: `integer`):

Upper limit of LEI candidates returned for name-based lookups.
