# HandOrBot: Was This Website Built by AI? an AI site detector (`kodabloomllc/hand-or-bot`) Actor

This is a website build by AI detector: you get a label per a website: hand (built by a person), bot (built with an AI site builder or coding agent) or can't tell, with a score from 0 to 1.

## Pricing

from $20.00 / 1,000 domain checkeds

This Actor is paid per event. You are not charged for the Apify platform usage, but only a fixed price for specific events.

## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## HandOrBot: Was This Website Built by AI?

Give HandOrBot a list of websites. For each one it loads the homepage in a real browser and tells you whether it was built by a person or with AI.

- **bot**: built with an AI site builder (Lovable, Bolt, Base44, Replit and similar) or a coding agent (Claude Code, Cursor and similar)
- **can't tell**: mixed signals, worth a human look
- **hand**: no strong signs of AI

Each result also has a score from 0 to 1.

### Who uses it

- Marketplaces and agencies checking that "hand-built" portfolio sites really are
- Link builders and directories screening sites before they list or buy
- Investors and researchers measuring how much of a market is built with AI

### How accurate is it?

The model behind HandOrBot is called AI-ctor. We trained and tested it on several thousand sites whose origin we know: human sites from before ChatGPT and AI sites from builder and coding-agent projects.

- It flagged **0.3%** of human-built sites as bot.
- It caught about **80%** of AI-built sites newer than anything it was trained on. Sites from AI builders are caught more often than sites made with coding agents.

A "bot" verdict is strong evidence. A "hand" verdict is weaker, because some AI-built sites look hand-made, especially simple static sites made with coding agents.

HandOrBot reads how a site is built: its code, structure and assets. It does not judge who wrote the text, so a hand-built site with AI-written copy can still get "hand".

### Input

A list of URLs. Bare domains like `example.com` are fine. Duplicates are removed.

```json
{
  "urls": ["https://example.com", "another-site.io"],
  "maxConcurrency": 4
}
```

### Output

One row per URL:

```json
{ "url": "https://example.com", "verdict": "bot", "score": 0.874, "note": "" }
```

When the homepage has very little text, the note reads like `little text on the homepage, so 2 more pages of the site were read`.

If a page can't be loaded (dead domain, timeout, error page), the verdict is `error` and the note says why. You are not charged for those.

### Pricing

You pay per site that gets a verdict. Sites that fail to load are free.

### Good to know

- The homepage you give is checked. If it has very little text (a login screen, a splash page), up to 3 more pages of the same site are read and the note says so. You are still charged once per URL.
- Adult and gambling sites are sensitive content: they get the verdict `skipped`, we do not label them, and you are not charged for them.
- A verdict is evidence, not proof. Please don't use it as the only reason to act against a person.

# Actor input Schema

## `urls` (type: `array`):

Websites to check, one per line. Bare domains like example.com are fine.

## `maxConcurrency` (type: `integer`):

How many pages to load at the same time. More needs more memory (about 1 GB per 2 pages).

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "urls": [
    "sigmabudgie.com",
    "aiengineerdojo.com"
  ],
  "maxConcurrency": 4
}
```

# Actor output Schema

## `results` (type: `string`):

One row per URL: verdict (hand, bot, can't tell or error), score from 0 to 1, and a note when a page could not be checked.

# API

You can run this Actor programmatically using our API. Below are code examples in JavaScript, Python, and CLI, as well as the OpenAPI specification and MCP server setup.

## JavaScript example

```javascript
import { ApifyClient } from 'apify-client';
// Initialize the ApifyClient with your Apify API token
// Replace the '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>' with your token
const client = new ApifyClient({
    token: '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>',
});
// Prepare Actor input
const input = {
    "urls": [
        "sigmabudgie.com",
        "aiengineerdojo.com"
    ]
};
// Run the Actor and wait for it to finish
const run = await client.actor("kodabloomllc/hand-or-bot").call(input);
// Fetch and print Actor results from the run's dataset (if any)
console.log('Results from dataset');
console.log(`💾 Check your data here: https://console.apify.com/storage/datasets/${run.defaultDatasetId}`);
const { items } = await client.dataset(run.defaultDatasetId).listItems();
items.forEach((item) => {
    console.dir(item);
});
