## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

### Use cases

- **Amazon sellers and FBA research**: see what sells in a category right now and how prices and review counts look at the top.
- **KDP authors and publishers**: track the Top 100 of your book categories (Kindle eBooks, Books, Audible), spot new releases that break in fast, compare covers and prices.
- **Trend spotting**: Movers & Shakers shows the biggest 24-hour rank jumps, the earliest signal that something is taking off.
- **Daily rank tracking**: schedule the actor and build your own rank history per ASIN.
- **Gift and seasonal research**: Most Wished For and Gift Ideas lists before holidays.

### How to use

1. Pick a **marketplace** (amazon.com by default).
2. Pick one or more **lists** (Best Sellers, New Releases, Movers & Shakers, Most Wished For, Gift Ideas).
3. Add **categories** as they appear in the Amazon URL after `/bestsellers/`:
   - `books`, `electronics`, `toys-and-games`, `beauty`, `kitchen`
   - `digital-text/154606011` (Kindle eBooks), `books/17` (Literature & Fiction)
   - leave empty to scrape every department's Top 100 (Any Department)
   - or simply paste the full list URL from your browser into **List URLs**.
4. Optional: set **Subcategory depth** to 1-3 to crawl every subcategory below your categories automatically.

#### Example input

```json
{
  "marketplace": "amazon.com",
  "listTypes": ["bestsellers", "new-releases"],
  "categories": ["books", "digital-text/154606011"],
  "maxItemsPerList": 100,
  "subcategoryDepth": 0
}
```

}
```
### Pricing
Pay per product saved. Start fees, proxies and compute are included. A full Top 100 list costs a few cents; errors cost nothing.
### Tips
- Amazon shows at most **100 products per list**, so `maxItemsPerList` above 100 is not possible.
- Movers & Shakers, Most Wished For and Gift Ideas are supported, but Amazon currently shows them empty on most marketplaces. When a list is empty the actor records an `empty-list` row (not charged) and moves on.
- Small subcategories can have fewer than 100 products.
- Prices are shown in the marketplace's local currency.
- With subcategory crawling use **Max lists** as a safety cap: Books alone has thousands of subcategories at depth 3.
### FAQ
**Is scraping Amazon best seller lists legal?** The lists are public pages that anyone can see without logging in. This actor reads only public data and no personal data. Check the terms that apply to your use case.
**Do I need an Amazon account or API key?** No.
**Something broke or a field is missing?** Open an issue on the Issues tab and it will be fixed quickly.
# Actor input Schema
## `marketplace` (type: `string`):
Which Amazon store to read. Prices come in the store's local currency.
## `listTypes` (type: `array`):
One or more Amazon ranking lists. Each list is scraped for every category below.
## `categories` (type: `array`):
Category path as it appears in the Amazon URL after /bestsellers/, e.g. books, electronics, digital-text/154606011 (Kindle eBooks), books/17 (Literature & Fiction). Empty = every top-level department (Any Department), one list each. A full list URL works too.
## `startUrls` (type: `array`):
Optional. Paste any Amazon Best Sellers / New Releases / Movers & Shakers / Most Wished For / Gift Ideas URL from any marketplace. When filled, Marketplace, Lists and Categories are ignored.
## `maxItemsPerList` (type: `integer`):
Amazon shows up to 100 ranked products per list (two pages of 50).
## `subcategoryDepth` (type: `integer`):
0 = only the lists above. 1 = also every direct subcategory, 2 = and their subcategories, and so on. Depth 1 on Books = about 30 extra lists.
## `maxLists` (type: `integer`):
Safety cap on how many lists (category pages) one run scrapes, useful with subcategory crawling.
## `maxItems` (type: `integer`):
Stop after this many products in total. 0 = no limit.
## `proxyConfiguration` (type: `object`):
Apify datacenter proxy works well for Amazon list pages.
## `maxRetries` (type: `integer`):
How many times a page is retried with a fresh proxy IP before it is reported as an error (errors are not charged).
