## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Hacker News: Who is Hiring Jobs, Stories & Search

Get data from Hacker News as clean JSON, using only the **official Hacker News APIs**: the Firebase item API and the Algolia HN Search API. There is no login, no HTML scraping and no proxies.

Three modes:

1. **`hiring`**: every post from the monthly **"Ask HN: Who is hiring?"** thread (or "Who wants to be hired?" / "Freelancer? Seeking freelancer?"). The first line of each post is split into company, remote flag and salary text, as written by the employer.
2. **`search`**: full-text search of stories or comments, with points and date filters. Useful for brand and competitor monitoring.
3. **`lists`**: the current top, new, best, Ask HN, Show HN or job lists.

### Popular uses

- Build a job board or alert of startup jobs, remote-only or by city.
- Find companies that are hiring right now (sales and recruiting leads).
- Track mentions of your product, competitors or a technology on HN with `onlyNew` on a schedule.

### Input examples

Latest hiring thread, remote jobs that mention Python:

```json
{ "mode": "hiring", "remoteOnly": true, "keywords": ["python"] }
```

A given month:

```json
{ "mode": "hiring", "month": "2026-09" }
```

New stories about "AI agents" with 50+ points in the last 7 days:

```json
{ "mode": "search", "query": "AI agents", "searchType": "story", "minPoints": 50, "sinceDays": 7 }
```

### Output

A job post:

```json
{
  "source": "hackernews",
  "type": "job",
  "id": "45012345",
  "threadId": "45000000",
  "threadTitle": "Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2026)",
  "isReply": false,
  "company": "Acme Robotics",
  "headline": "Acme Robotics | Senior Backend Engineer | Berlin or REMOTE (EU) | Full-time | $150k-$190k",
  "segments": ["Acme Robotics", "Senior Backend Engineer", "Berlin or REMOTE (EU)", "Full-time", "$150k-$190k"],
  "remote": true,
  "onsite": null,
  "salaryText": "$150k-$190k",
  "author": "acme_hr",
  "postedAt": "2026-10-01T15:01:00Z",
  "text": "Acme Robotics | Senior Backend Engineer | ...\n\nWe build warehouse robots...",
  "links": ["https://acme.example/jobs"],
  "hnUrl": "https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45012345",
  "scrapedAt": "2026-10-22T12:00:00Z"
}
```

Stories carry `title`, `url`, `points`, `commentCount`; comments carry `storyId` and `storyTitle`.

A run summary is saved to the `OUTPUT` record of the run's key-value store.

### Good to know

- `company`, `remote` and `salaryText` come only from the first line of a post, following the usual HN `Company | Role | Location | ...` format. Posts that do not follow it keep these fields `null`; the full text is always in `text`.
- `remote` is `false` only when the first line says "no remote" or similar.
- Posts belong to their authors. Respect the people who post and the HN guidelines when contacting them.

### Pricing

You pay only for items returned. There is no charge for platform usage.
