## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## New Construction Leads: Chicago Building Permits & Contractors

**Every new building the City of Chicago just permitted, with the general contractor, owner, architect, subcontractors and the reported project cost. About 2¢ a lead.**

The Actor pulls **newly issued new construction permits** from the **Chicago Department of Buildings**: single-family homes, 2–9 flats, apartment and mixed-use buildings, restaurants, warehouses and more. That's about **110 a month**, or **70 at $100k+**. Event tents and temporary stages are filtered out by default. Every lead lists the **contacts on the permit**: general contractor, owner, architect, plus electrical, plumbing, masonry and HVAC contractors and the expediter. You get them as named columns and as a full contact list with city, state and ZIP. You can optionally add renovation/alteration permits.

👉 **Try it free:** new Apify accounts get **$5 of free platform credit every month**, enough for hundreds of leads.

### Real sample leads (pulled October 2026)

| Address | Area | Cost | General contractor | Owner | Issued |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8332 S Dr Martin L King Jr Dr | Chatham | $25,000,000 | Skender Construction LLC | Park Manor Phase I, LLC | 2026-10-09 |
| 2625 W Pershing Rd | Brighton Park | $500,000 | Osiris Construction Inc | Alan Mithani | 2026-10-09 |
| 3040 N Lincoln Ave | Lake View | $1,500,000 | Pro Homes, Incorporated | 3040-42 Lincoln LLC | 2026-10-08 |
| 1419 S Christiana Ave | North Lawndale | $500,000 | Toro Construction Corp | Dionte White | 2026-10-08 |
| 4902 W Augusta Blvd | Austin | $400,000 | Romero's Construction Service Inc | Romero's Construction Service Inc. | 2026-10-08 |

**ROI:** 1,000 permitted Chicago projects cost $20. One supply contract, subcontract or insurance policy covers years of runs.

### Who uses it

Building material & lumber suppliers · subcontractors (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, roofing, windows, drywall, concrete) · equipment rental & dumpsters · builders risk & contractor insurance · construction lenders · architects & engineers · security, low-voltage, solar, landscaping · real estate & property services.

### Filters

- **Minimum reported cost** (prefilled at $100,000)
- **Also include renovation/alteration permits** (off by default)
- **Community areas** (`Logan Square`, `West Town`, `Near North Side`) · **wards**
- **Work description keywords** (`Single Family`, `Dwelling Units`, `Restaurant`)
- **Contact name keywords**, to track specific GCs or developers
- **Exclude tents & temporary structures** (on by default)
- Issue-date range

### Set it up as a daily lead feed

1. Set your filters (or leave them empty for everything).
2. Keep **Only new since last run** on. Each run returns only leads you haven't seen.
3. Click **Schedule → Daily**, then connect **Google Sheets, HubSpot, Salesforce, Slack, Zapier or Make** so fresh leads land in your tools automatically.

Runs with nothing new cost almost nothing, because you only pay for the leads you get.

### Input

```json
{"minCost": 250000, "communityAreas": ["Logan Square", "West Town", "Lincoln Park"], "includeRenovations": false, "dateFrom": "30 days", "onlyNew": true}
```

### Output fields

`permitNumber, permitType, permitStatus, reviewType, workDescription, reportedCost, totalFee, address, city, state, ward, communityArea, applicationStartDate, issueDate, generalContractor, owner, architect, electricalContractor, plumbingContractor, masonryContractor, hvacContractor, expeditor, contacts, latitude, longitude, source`. Export as CSV, Excel or JSON, or pull it through the API.

### Pricing

Pay per result: **$0.02 per lead** ($20 per 1,000). No subscription.

### FAQ

**Where does the data come from?** The "Building Permits" dataset on data.cityofchicago.org, published by the City of Chicago Department of Buildings and updated daily.
**Does it include phone numbers or emails?** The city publishes contact names, cities and ZIPs but not phones or emails. Company names make enrichment easy.
**Why is the reported cost sometimes low?** It's the applicant's own estimate. Use the minimum-cost filter to focus on bigger jobs.
**How do I avoid duplicates?** Keep "Only new since last run" on, and use a different dedupe store name for each separate feed.

**Need another city?** Request it in the Issues tab. LeadSignal adds new feeds regularly.
