## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Website Tech Stack Detector: a BuiltWith and Wappalyzer alternative for bulk lists

Find out **what technologies any website uses**: CMS (WordPress, Webflow…), e-commerce platform (Shopify,
WooCommerce, Magento…), JavaScript frameworks (React, Next.js, Vue…), analytics and tag managers, advertising
pixels, CDN and hosting, payment providers, marketing automation, chat widgets, and **email providers from DNS**
(Google Workspace, Microsoft 365…).

Detection uses **7,600+ open-source technology fingerprints** with version numbers and categories, run against
HTTP headers, cookies, HTML, scripts, meta tags and DNS records. Paste 10 or 100,000 domains and get one clean
row per website.

### Quick start

1. Paste domains or URLs into **URLs** (one per line, any format: `example.com`, `https://www.example.com/pricing`).
2. Optionally filter for the technologies you care about (`technologies` + `onlyMatching`) to build lead lists.
3. Click **Start** and export to CSV/Excel/JSON, or call the Actor through the Apify API, Zapier, Make or n8n.

### Use cases

- **Lead generation and sales prospecting:** "all Shopify stores using Klaviyo", "WordPress sites without Google Analytics"
- **Competitor research:** see the stack, tools and vendors of competing websites
- **Market research:** technology adoption across an industry list
- **Agencies:** qualify prospects before outreach (outdated CMS, no tracking, slow stack)

### Input

```json
{
  "urls": ["allbirds.com", "https://wordpress.org/news/", "vercel.com"],
  "checkDns": true,
  "minConfidence": 0
}
```

### New options (v0.2)

| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| `technologies` + `onlyMatching` | Build lead lists: keep only sites using e.g. Shopify, HubSpot or Stripe (others are free) |
| `categories` | Keep only Analytics, Ecommerce, CMS, Payment, ... technologies |
| `maxPagesPerDomain` (1-5) | Also scan pricing / shop / blog pages for tools that only load there; same price per site |
| `trackChanges`, `stateKey` | `addedTechnologies` / `removedTechnologies` since the last run (competitor monitoring) |

Versions are reported when the page exposes them (`version`). Not included on purpose: headless-browser rendering (keeps cost low) and any bot-protection bypass.

### Output (one item per website)

```json
{
  "url": "https://www.allbirds.com", "status": "ok", "statusCode": 200, "title": "Allbirds…",
  "technologyCount": 10,
  "technologyNames": ["Cloudflare", "Shopify", "Swiper", "Apple Pay", "PayPal", "Google Tag Manager", "…"],
  "byCategory": {"Ecommerce": ["Shopify"], "CDN": ["Cloudflare"], "Payment processors": ["Apple Pay", "PayPal"], "Tag managers": ["Google Tag Manager"]},
  "technologies": [{"name": "WordPress", "version": "7.2", "categories": ["CMS", "Blogs"], "confidence": 100, "implied": false, "website": "https://wordpress.org"}]
}
```

### Pricing (pay per event)

| Event | Price |
|---|---|
| Analyzed website (`website`) | **$0.001** ($1 per 1,000 sites) |
| Actor start | $0.00005 (Apify default) |

- Failed or unreachable websites are **free**; with `onlyMatching`, sites that don't match are free too.
- Scanning extra pages per domain (`maxPagesPerDomain`) does not change the price.
- Examples: 1,000 domains ≈ $1; 50,000 domains ≈ $50.
- Set **Maximum cost per run** to cap spend; the Actor stops cleanly at the cap.

### How it works and its limits

- One HTTP request per website plus DNS lookups. No headless browser, so it is fast and cheap.
- Technologies that only appear after JavaScript runs (some single-page-app tools) may be missed. Server-side,
  HTML, script and DNS-based detections are covered.
- robots.txt is respected by default. No captcha or anti-bot bypass.
- Fingerprints: [webappanalyzer](https://github.com/enthec/webappanalyzer) (GPL-3.0), an open-source fork of the
  Wappalyzer rules. Not affiliated with Wappalyzer or BuiltWith.

### FAQ

**Is this the same as Wappalyzer or BuiltWith?** It uses an open-source fork of the Wappalyzer fingerprints, run
live against each site. BuiltWith also has historical data; this Actor reports what the site uses right now
(plus changes since your last run with `trackChanges`).

**Why is a technology missing?** It may only load after JavaScript runs, after login, or on a page not scanned.
Try `maxPagesPerDomain: 3`.

**Do I need proxies?** No. Sites behind aggressive bot protection may return an error row (free).

**Can I monitor competitors?** Yes: schedule the Actor with `trackChanges: true` and a fixed `stateKey` to get
`addedTechnologies` / `removedTechnologies` on every run.

# Actor input Schema

## `urls` (type: `array`):

Homepages or domains to analyze (https:// is added automatically).

## `checkDns` (type: `boolean`):

Also detect email, DNS and verification providers from MX/TXT/NS records (Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Cloudflare DNS…).

## `minConfidence` (type: `integer`):

Hide detections below this confidence.

## `categories` (type: `array`):

Keep only technologies in these categories, e.g. Ecommerce, Analytics, CMS, Payment processors, JavaScript frameworks, Marketing automation.

## `technologies` (type: `array`):

Technology names to look for, e.g. Shopify, HubSpot, Stripe. Results get matchedTechnologies.

## `onlyMatching` (type: `boolean`):

Lead lists: sites without any of the technologies above are not saved and not charged.

## `maxPagesPerDomain` (type: `integer`):

1 = homepage only (fastest). Up to 5 also scans internal pages such as pricing, blog or shop to find tools that only load there. Same price per website.

## `trackChanges` (type: `boolean`):

Adds addedTechnologies / removedTechnologies compared to the last run with the same state key.

## `stateKey` (type: `string`):

Name of the memory used by change tracking.

## `respectRobotsTxt` (type: `boolean`):

Skip sites whose robots.txt disallows the homepage (free).

## `maxConcurrency` (type: `integer`):

How many websites are analyzed at the same time.
