## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Washington Contractor License Lookup & Scraper: new WA contractor leads (businesses only)

Get a **daily feed of new and renewed Washington State contractor licenses** from the official **WA Department of Labor & Industries (L\&I)** open data on data.wa.gov. It covers construction, electrical, plumbing and elevator contractors. Each result is a **business entity** (LLC, corporation, LLP, partnership or joint venture) with its license number, license type and status, effective and expiration dates, specialty (General, Specialty, Residential...), UBI number, city and ZIP, business address and phone, and a link to the L\&I verification page.

No scraping, no browser, no proxies. The Actor reads the state's open-data API, so runs take seconds. The data refreshes daily.

### Who uses this

- **Suppliers, distributors and equipment-rental reps** selling to newly licensed contractors.
- **Insurance, bonding, payroll and accounting firms** reaching new contracting businesses.
- **General contractors** recruiting licensed subs by trade and area.
- **Compliance and KYB teams** checking license status in bulk.

### Privacy by design

- **Sole proprietors (L\&I type "Individual") and trusts are always excluded**, because their names are personal names.
- Every kept business name must carry a legal-entity marker (LLC, Inc, Corp, LLP...).
- The **principal/owner name column is never requested** from the API.

### Input

### Output (example)

```json
{
  "licenseNumber": "AMBEREL740OQ", "businessName": "AMBERCREST ELECTRICAL LLC", "businessType": "LLC",
  "licenseType": "Electrical Contractor", "licenseStatus": "Active", "licenseEffectiveDate": "2026-10-19",
  "licenseExpirationDate": "2028-10-19", "specialty": "Residential", "ubi": "606277030", "city": "Spokane", "zipCode": "99201",
  "businessAddress": "522 W RIVERSIDE AVE STE N", "businessPhone": "(xxx) xxx-xxxx",
  "verifyUrl": "https://secure.lni.wa.gov/verify/Detail.aspx?LIC=AMBEREL740OQ"
}
```

A `RUN_SUMMARY` record gives the counts scanned, kept and dropped (not a business entity, or filtered out).

### Run it daily

Schedule the Actor daily with `effectiveWithinDays: 1` or `2` to get each day's newly licensed businesses. Send the results to Google Sheets, a CRM, Slack or email through Apify integrations.

### FAQ

**Is this legal to use?** Yes. The source is the State of Washington's official open-data portal. The dataset "L\&I Contractor License Data - General" is published under the Open Data Commons Public Domain Dedication and License (PDDL).

**Does "effective date" mean a brand-new license?** It means the start of the current license term, so the results include both new licenses and renewals. A UBI number you haven't seen before usually indicates a new business.
