## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Canada Medical Device Companies – Health Canada MDALL

### What it does

Downloads the **company list** from Health Canada's official Medical Devices Active Licence Listing (MDALL) API. That is every manufacturer that holds or has held a Canadian medical device licence (~7,700 companies, updated daily). It returns company ID, name, city, region, country and status, filtered as requested. One API request per run.

Source: [MDALL on open.canada.ca](https://open.canada.ca/data/en/dataset/c801a084-210b-4cd2-8513-26a00b66eb6f), [MDALL API documentation](https://health-products.canada.ca/api/documentation/mdall-documentation-en.html).

### Who it's for

Medtech sales and distribution teams, regulatory consultants, market researchers and suppliers looking for licensed device manufacturers by country or province.

### Input

| Key | Notes |
|---|---|
| `companyName` | contains, e.g. `Medtronic` |
| `countryCode` | 2 letters, e.g. `CA`, `US`, `DE` |
| `regionCode` | province/state code, e.g. `NS`, `ON` |
| `city` | contains |
| `status` | `Active` (default), `Inactive` or `all` |
| `maxItems` | default 100, maximum 50,000 |

Example: `{"countryCode": "CA", "regionCode": "NS"}`

### Output

`companyId`, `companyName`, `companyNameWithheld`, `legalFormDetected`, `city`, `regionCode`, `countryCode`, `status`, `source`, `licence`.

### Privacy

- **Street addresses and postal codes are never exported:** `addr_line_1`, `addr_line_2`, `addr_line_3` and `postal_code` are dropped. The API has no contact names, emails or phones.
- **Names that look like individuals are blanked by a rule-based filter**, not by a full check. A company name with no legal-form or business words is treated as a person if it matches one of these patterns: one person ("J. POHLER", "DR. JOHN SMITH"), two people joined by & or AND, or SURNAME (GIVEN NAME). For those, `companyName` and `city` are set to null and `companyNameWithheld` to true; region and country stay. On the Oct 16, 2026 data this affected 1 of 7,677 companies. Bare acronyms (e.g. "GN OTOMETRICS") and names with business words are kept, so a sole proprietor trading under a personal name plus a business word ("JOHN SMITH MEDICAL") is shown.
- **QA check (Oct 19, 2026):** a random sample of 441 distinct company names from a full run had 0 personal names (0%). Some firms are named after their founders (e.g. a surname plus "Medizintechnik GmbH"); these are businesses and are kept.
- The output is **reduced, not anonymous**: street addresses and postal codes are dropped, but company name, city, region and country remain and can point to a small business or its owner.
- `legalFormDetected` flags names that carry a legal-form word (Inc, Ltd, GmbH, SA, KFT, ...). About 88% do; the rest are kept as published.
- Licence and device lists are not included in v0.1 (company records only).

### Licence and terms

- **Licence:** [Open Government Licence – Canada](https://open.canada.ca/en/open-government-licence-canada), which allows use "including for commercial purposes" with attribution. Every row carries the attribution.
- **Automated access:** this is the official public API that Health Canada lists on open.canada.ca. `health-products.canada.ca` has no robots.txt (404), so nothing is disallowed. No terms were found that ban automated use. The Actor makes one request per run.
- Independent; not endorsed by Health Canada.

### Pricing

**Price: $0.003 per result, no start fee** (pay per event `apify-default-dataset-item`, one result = one company). All ~7,600 active companies cost about $23.

### Limits

- English values only. Status codes other than A or I are passed through as published.
