## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Canada Vehicle Recalls – Transport Canada

### What it does

Reads Transport Canada's **Vehicle Recalls Database** open data and returns clean, filtered recall rows (one row per recall × make/model/model year). Two official files are available:

- `last60days` (default): the daily file of recalls from the last 60 days (~1 MB). It includes manufacturer name and last-update date.
- `full`: the monthly file with every recall since 1975 (~200 MB, streamed; nothing is stored).

One file download per run, no page scraping. Source: [Vehicle Recalls Database on open.canada.ca](https://open.canada.ca/data/en/dataset/1ec92326-47ef-4110-b7ca-959fab03f96d).

### Who it's for

Dealers, fleet managers, insurers, auto-parts retailers, VIN-check and car-buying apps, and journalists who track recalls by make, model or system.

### Input

| Key | Notes |
|---|---|
| `dataset` | `last60days` (default) or `full` |
| `make` | exact make, case-insensitive, e.g. `FORD` |
| `model` | contains, e.g. `F-150` |
| `modelYearFrom` / `modelYearTo` | e.g. 2018–2024 |
| `category` | contains, e.g. `Car`, `SUV`, `Tires`, `Child Car Seat` |
| `systemType` | contains, e.g. `Brakes`, `Airbags` |
| `recallDateFrom` / `recallDateTo` | YYYY-MM-DD |
| `keyword` | text in the recall description |
| `maxItems` | default 100, maximum 50,000 |

Example: `{"dataset": "full", "make": "TOYOTA", "modelYearFrom": 2020, "systemType": "Airbags"}`

### Output

`recallNumber`, `manufacturerRecallNumber`, `recallDate`, `lastUpdateDate`, `modelYear`, `make`, `model`, `manufacturer`, `category`, `systemType`, `notificationType`, `unitsAffected`, `comment`, `dataset`, `source`, `licence`. `lastUpdateDate` and `manufacturer` exist only in the 60-day file (null for `full`).

### Privacy

The source has no personal fields. The free-text `comment` sometimes includes manufacturer contact numbers or emails, and every email address and phone number is replaced with `[redacted]`. In the Oct 16, 2026 60-day file, 20 of 632 rows had text redacted. French text columns are not exported.

The output is reduced, not anonymous.

### Licence and terms

- **Licence:** [Open Government Licence – Canada](https://open.canada.ca/en/open-government-licence-canada), which allows use "including for commercial purposes" with attribution. Every row carries the attribution.
- **Automated access:** the files are published downloads at `opendatatc.tc.canada.ca`. That host has no robots.txt (404), so nothing is disallowed. No terms were found that ban automated download of this open data. The Actor makes one request per run.
- Independent; not endorsed by Transport Canada.

### Pricing

**Price: $0.003 per result, no start fee** (pay per event `apify-default-dataset-item`, one result = one recall row). 1,000 rows cost $3.00.

### Limits

- English text only. The data is as current as the Transport Canada files: the 60-day file is updated daily and the full file monthly.
- A recall that covers many models appears once per make/model/year.

## JavaScript example

```javascript
import { ApifyClient } from 'apify-client';
// Initialize the ApifyClient with your Apify API token
// Replace the '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>' with your token
const client = new ApifyClient({
    token: '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>',
});
// Prepare Actor input
const input = {};
// Run the Actor and wait for it to finish
const run = await client.actor("loudtzu/canada-vehicle-recalls").call(input);
// Fetch and print Actor results from the run's dataset (if any)
console.log('Results from dataset');
console.log(`💾 Check your data here: https://console.apify.com/storage/datasets/${run.defaultDatasetId}`);
const { items } = await client.dataset(run.defaultDatasetId).listItems();
