## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Canadian Registered Charities (CRA) – Open Data

### What it does

Downloads the **Identification** file of the Canada Revenue Agency "List of charities" open data release (T3010 information returns) from open.canada.ca and returns one clean row per charity, filtered the way you ask. One file download per run; no website scraping.

Sources: [2024 List of charities](https://open.canada.ca/data/en/dataset/80c00cdb-1358-415c-bb8b-0de7f12675b8), [2023 List of charities](https://open.canada.ca/data/en/dataset/05b3abd0-e70f-4b3b-a9c5-acc436bd15b6).

### Who it's for

Fundraising and grant-making teams, prospect researchers, CRM enrichment (match a BN to a charity), journalists and sector researchers.

### Input

| Key | Notes |
|---|---|
| `year` | `2024` (default) or `2023` |
| `province` | 2-letter code, e.g. `NS` |
| `city` | City contains (case-insensitive) |
| `designation` | `A` public foundation, `B` private foundation, `C` charitable organization |
| `categoryCode` | CRA category code, e.g. `0140` |
| `keyword` | Legal or account name contains |
| `maxItems` | Default 100 (max 50,000) |

Example: `{"province": "NS", "designation": "C", "maxItems": 500}`

### Output

`businessNumber`, `legalName`, `accountName`, `designation`, `designationLabel`, `categoryCode`, `subCategoryCode`, `city`, `province`, `postalFsa` (first 3 characters of the postal code only), `country`, `dataYear`, `source`, `licence`.

### Privacy: what is left out

- The **Directors/Officers file is never downloaded or used.** No director, officer or trustee names.
- Street address lines and the full postal code are dropped (only city, province and postal FSA are kept). Small charities often use a volunteer's home address.
- Contact web addresses, compensation and other schedule files are not used.
- Note: for some very small charities, the legal or account name can be a person's name. This is a public CRA registration name and is kept as published.

### Licence and terms

- **Licence:** [Open Government Licence – Canada](https://open.canada.ca/en/open-government-licence-canada). It allows use "including for commercial purposes" with attribution. Every row carries the attribution text.
- **Automated access:** the data comes from open.canada.ca's published file download. robots.txt allows it (it only asks for `Crawl-delay: 20`; this Actor makes one request per run). No terms ban automated download of open data.
- Independent; not endorsed by the Government of Canada or the CRA.

### Pricing

**Price: $0.003 per result, no start fee** (pay per event, one result = one charity). 1,000 charities cost $3.00. For example, all ~3,500 Nova Scotia charities cost about $10.50. For a one-off copy of the whole country, the free CSV on open.canada.ca is cheaper.

### Limits

- Data reflects the annual CRA release; it is not a live registration status check.
- Category codes are CRA numeric codes; see the CRA codes list PDF on the dataset page for their meanings.

# API

You can run this Actor programmatically using our API. Below are code examples in JavaScript, Python, and CLI, as well as the OpenAPI specification and MCP server setup.

## JavaScript example

```javascript
import { ApifyClient } from 'apify-client';
// Initialize the ApifyClient with your Apify API token
// Replace the '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>' with your token
const client = new ApifyClient({
    token: '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>',
});
// Prepare Actor input
const input = {};
// Run the Actor and wait for it to finish
const run = await client.actor("loudtzu/cra-charities").call(input);
// Fetch and print Actor results from the run's dataset (if any)
console.log('Results from dataset');
console.log(`💾 Check your data here: https://console.apify.com/storage/datasets/${run.defaultDatasetId}`);
