## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Indigo.ca Book Search Scraper – CAD Prices, ISBN, Stock

Exports indigo.ca search results: books, eBooks, audiobooks and gift items, with CAD price, ISBN and stock. It reads the same public search that the indigo.ca search box uses. No login.

### What it returns

For each product:

- **Book details:** title, ISBN-13, ISBN-10, UPC, format (Hardcover, Paperback, Kobo eBook…), authors, illustrators, translators, publisher, imprint, release date, page count, language, series and number in series.
- **Price and sale:** price in CAD, and the regular price when the item is on sale.
- **Rating:** average rating. It is `null` when the item has no reviews (Indigo sends 0 for those).
- **Stock:** units available online, and the number of Indigo, Chapters and Coles stores that list stock.
- **Other formats:** the other formats of the same title, each with its price and ISBN.
- **Store details:** Indigo category and section, product link and cover image.
- **Description:** included only if you ask for it.

### How to use

1. Add one or more search terms. A title, author, ISBN, series or topic all work.
2. Pick the English or French site, a sort order and, if you want, only some formats (for example Hardcover and Paperback).
3. Set **Max products**. It is split evenly between the search terms.

### Input

| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| `keywords` | Search terms. Empty or whitespace-only lines stop the run with a clear message before anything is charged. |
| `language` | `en` (default) or `fr`. See **French site** below: many links on the French site go to the English site, including for French books. |
| `sort` | `relevance`, `price_low`, `price_high`, `rating`, `newest`, `release_date` |
| `formats` | Only these formats. Use the English names. On the French site, both the French and the English name are searched. |
| `inStockOnlineOnly` | Skip items with no online stock |
| `includeDescription` | Add the full description |
| `maxItems` | Total products (default 100, up to 50,000) |
| `fetchAll` | Save every result, up to 50,000 |

### Output

`productId`, `variantId`, `sku`, `isbn13`, `isbn10`, `upc`, `title`, `format`, `authors`, `illustrators`, `translators`, `publisher`, `imprint`, `releaseDate`, `pageCount`, `language`, `seriesName`, `seriesPosition`, `price`, `compareAtPrice`, `onSale`, `currency`, `rating`, `onlineStock`, `inStockOnline`, `storesWithStock`, `category`, `section`, `productType`, `brand`, `featured`, `adultOnly`, `formats`, `formatCount`, `url`, `image`, `description` (optional), `searchQuery`, `page`, `position`.

Example (shortened):

```json
{"title": "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince", "isbn13": "9781408855706", "format": "Paperback", "authors": ["J.K. Rowling"], "publisher": "Bloomsbury USA", "releaseDate": "2014-09-01", "pageCount": 560, "seriesName": "Harry Potter", "seriesPosition": 6, "price": 18.0, "compareAtPrice": null, "rating": 5.0, "onlineStock": 551, "storesWithStock": 152, "formats": [{"format": "Paperback", "price": 18.0, "isbn13": "9781408855706"}, {"format": "Kobo eBook", "price": 14.99, "isbn13": "9781781100257"}], "url": "https://www.indigo.ca/products/harry-potter-and-the-half-blood-prince"}
```

### Fill rates in a sample

This sample was 100 results for `harry potter` on the English site, taken on Oct 29, 2026.

- Filled for all 100: `title`, `price`, `url`, `image`, `releaseDate` and `onlineStock`.
- Filled for 89 to 95: `isbn13`, `format`, `publisher`, `authors`, `pageCount`, `isbn10` and `language`. The gaps are mostly gift and non-book items.
- `rating`: 47 of 100. It is empty for items with no ratings.
- `storesWithStock` above 0: 73 of 100.
- `compareAtPrice`: 4 of 100. It is only set when the item is on sale.
- More than one format: 48 of 100.

In a 40-product test run on Apify (`louise penny` and `atomic habits`, Oct 29, 2026), `title`, `isbn13`, `price`, `authors` and `format` were filled for all 40. `rating` was filled for 15 and `onlineStock` above 0 for 33.

### French site

Indigo's French site is not fully French. In tests on Oct 29, 2026:

- **Many links go to the English site.** The share of results with an English-site link varies widely by search: from under 10% to over 90% (45% overall across six test searches, Oct 29, 2026). This includes French-language books: for `le petit prince`, in a 50-result test (Oct 29, 2026), 27 results were French books.
- **Some format labels come in English**, for example `Paperback`, `Hardcover` or `Kobo eBook`. This Actor translates known format labels to French on the French site (`Paperback` becomes `Couverture souple`, `Kobo eBook` becomes `Livre numérique Kobo`). Labels it does not know are left as Indigo sent them.
- Titles stay as published. Links are left as Indigo sends them, because the French page does not always exist.

### Limits

- **Search-result data only.** No review text, reviewer names or per-store addresses. Store stock is a count of stores, not a list.
- Indigo's search is forgiving. A misspelled or nonsense term can still return loosely matching items, so check `title`.
- A blank or whitespace-only search fails the run at once with a clear message, before any request or charge.
- If no products are saved, the run is marked failed, the reason goes in the `ERRORS` record, and nothing is charged.
- No personal data is collected.

### Pricing

Pay per event:

- **$0.00075 per product** saved.
- **$0.0005 per run**, charged only after the first product is saved. Runs that save nothing cost nothing.

### Other Actors that cover Indigo

Prices were checked through the Apify API on Oct 29, 2026. Start fees for the other Actors are shown at their minimum: one start event. Apify charges those start events per GB of run memory, so they can be higher (the retail tracker's default is 2 GB, which is two events).

| Actor | Checked | Price per product | Start fee per run | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| yugenox/indigo-scraper | 2026-10-29 | $0.0015 | $0.001 | Also sells store-stock ($0.001) and review ($0.0005) events |
| yugenox/canada-retail-price-tracker | 2026-10-29 | $0.001 | $0.002 | Covers Indigo among 74 Canadian stores; search terms or collections only for Indigo. Changes mode costs $0.002 per change plus $0.00001 per product checked |
| This Actor | 2026-10-29 | $0.00075 | $0.0005, only if something is saved | |

What a run costs at list prices (start fee at one event):

| Products | This Actor | yugenox/canada-retail-price-tracker | yugenox/indigo-scraper |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $0.00125 | $0.003 | $0.0025 |
| 10 | $0.008 | $0.012 | $0.016 |
| 100 | $0.0755 | $0.102 | $0.151 |
| 1,000 | $0.7505 | $1.002 | $1.501 |

On these list prices, this Actor costs less for any number of products: both its per-product price and its start fee are lower than each of the others. If you need review text, per-store stock lists or a price-change feed, one of the other Actors is a better fit.

### FAQ

#### Do I need an Indigo account?

No. It reads the same public search as the indigo.ca search box.

#### Why is `rating` empty?

The item has no reviews. Indigo sends 0 for these, and this Actor saves `null`.

#### Why do French-site links open the English site?

Indigo's French site links many items, including French books, to the English site. Links are kept as Indigo sends them.

#### Can I get the book description?

Yes. Turn on `includeDescription`.

#### What does it cost?

$0.00075 per product saved, plus $0.0005 per run once the first product is saved. Runs that save nothing cost nothing.
