## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## OSFI Regulated Institutions & Pension Plans – Canada

### What it does

Reads OSFI's **"Who we regulate"** open data and returns two lists in one dataset:

- `institutions`: federally regulated financial institutions such as banks, foreign bank branches, life and P\&C insurers, trust and loan companies, cooperative credit associations and fraternal benefit societies (~345).
- `pensionPlans`: federally registered pension plans, with plan name, registration number and sponsor (~1,000).

Both CSVs are hosted on open.canada.ca. The Actor makes at most 2 downloads per run, 20 seconds apart.

Source: [Who we regulate on open.canada.ca](https://open.canada.ca/data/en/dataset/b27ec3ef-7338-4e76-a6fd-128339a92df5).

### Who it's for

Fintech and regtech vendors, compliance teams, B2B sales to financial institutions and pension plans, and researchers who need an up-to-date list of federally regulated entities.

### Input

| Key | Notes |
|---|---|
| `registers` | `["institutions", "pensionPlans"]` (default both) |
| `keyword` | institution, trade or sponsor name contains |
| `group` | e.g. `Banks`, `Life Insurance Companies` |
| `industry` | e.g. `Foreign Bank Branches` |
| `province` | e.g. `Ontario` or `ON` |
| `city` | contains |
| `maxItems` | default 100, maximum 50,000 |

Example: `{"registers": ["institutions"], "group": "Banks"}`

### Output

`register`, `name`, `tradeName`, `type`, `group`, `industry`, `insuranceClasses`, `planRegistrationNumber`, `planSponsor`, `planSponsorWithheld`, `city`, `province`, `source`, `licence`.

### Privacy

- **Dropped from institutions:** `Representative Name`, `Title`, `Address Line 1`, `Address Line 2`, `Postal ZIP Code`.
- **Dropped from pension plans:** `Administrator Contact Name` and `Address`.
- Only the city and province are kept.
- Plan names were checked for personal names (Oct 19, 2026, all 996 distinct plan names of 998 plans reviewed): none is an individual's name. Some are organisations named after people, such as First Nations or bands ("Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation", "James Smith Indian Band", "Louis Bull Tribal Administration") and family firms ("James Richardson & Sons, Limited", "G. Testmarsh Transport Limited"). These are kept.
- In short: contact names and street addresses removed; **reduced, not anonymous**. Sponsor, plan name, city and province can still point to a small employer.
- A pension-plan sponsor name that looks like an individual person is blanked, with `planSponsorWithheld: true`. None did on the Oct 16, 2026 data (0 of 998).

### Licence and terms

- **Licence:** [Open Government Licence – Canada](https://open.canada.ca/en/open-government-licence-canada), which allows use "including for commercial purposes" with attribution. Every row carries the attribution.
- **Automated access:** the files are open.canada.ca resource downloads (served from its storage). open.canada.ca robots.txt allows them with `Crawl-delay: 20`, which the Actor honours between its two downloads. No terms were found that ban automated download of open data.
- Independent; not endorsed by OSFI.

### Pricing

**Price: $0.003 per result, no start fee** (pay per event `apify-default-dataset-item`, one result = one institution or plan). Both full lists (~1,340 rows) cost about $4.

### Limits

- English files only. The data is as current as OSFI's monthly update.
