## What's an Apify Actor?

Actors are web data automations that power AI and operations. They run on the Apify platform to scrape websites, process data, connect APIs, and automate workflows.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.
Actors are written with capital "A".

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.
The best way to integrate Actors is as follows.

- **AI agents and MCP clients** — the [Apify MCP server](https://docs.apify.com/integrations/mcp.md) at `https://mcp.apify.com` (remote, streamable HTTP, OAuth on first use).
- **Agentic workflows and local Actor development** — [Agent Skills](https://apify.com/.well-known/agent-skills/index.json) with the [Apify CLI](https://docs.apify.com/cli/docs.md): `npm install -g apify-cli`, then `apify login`.
- **JavaScript/TypeScript projects** — the official [JS/TS client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md): `npm install apify-client`.
- **Python projects** — the official [Python client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md): `pip install apify-client`.
- **Any other language** — the [REST API](https://docs.apify.com/api/v2.md).

For usage examples, see the [API](#api) section below.

## Speedtest Global Index Scraper

Scrape internet speed rankings from [Speedtest.net Global Index](https://www.speedtest.net/global-index). Extract median download speeds by country for fixed broadband and mobile connections.

### Features

- **Global mode**: Scrape the full country ranking table from the global index
- **Country mode**: Scrape individual country detail pages with download, upload, and latency
- **Connection type**: Filter by fixed broadband or mobile
- **Median speeds**: Extract median download/upload speeds in Mbps
- **Latency**: Ping/latency data in milliseconds (country mode)

### Input

| Field | Type | Default | Description |
|-------|------|---------|-------------|
| `mode` | string | `"global"` | `"global"` for full rankings, `"country"` for specific country pages. |
| `countries` | string\[] | `[]` | Country names for country mode (e.g. `["United States", "Japan"]`). |
| `connectionType` | string | `"fixed"` | `"fixed"` for broadband, `"mobile"` for cellular. |
| `limit` | integer | `200` | Maximum number of results to return. |
| `proxyConfiguration` | object | - | Optional proxy settings. |

### Output

Each result includes:

| Field | Description |
|-------|-------------|
| `rank` | Global ranking position (global mode) |
| `country` | Country name |
| `medianDownload` | Median download speed in Mbps |
| `medianUpload` | Median upload speed in Mbps (country mode) |
| `medianLatency` | Median latency/ping in ms (country mode) |
| `connectionType` | "fixed" or "mobile" |
| `sourceUrl` | Source URL on Speedtest.net |
| `scrapedAt` | ISO timestamp of when the data was scraped |

### Usage Examples

#### Full global rankings (fixed broadband)

```json
{
    "mode": "global",
    "connectionType": "fixed",
    "limit": 200
}
```

#### Mobile speed rankings

```json
{
    "mode": "global",
    "connectionType": "mobile",
    "limit": 100
}
```

#### Specific country details

```json
{
    "mode": "country",
    "countries": ["United States", "Japan", "South Korea", "Germany"],
    "connectionType": "fixed"
}
```

### How It Works

1. **Global mode**: Fetches the Speedtest Global Index page and parses the median ranking table for the selected connection type. Extracts rank, country name, and median download speed from server-rendered HTML tables.

2. **Country mode**: Fetches individual country pages at `/global-index/{country-slug}`. Extracts download, upload, and latency from the result-group elements specific to the selected connection type.

### Notes

- Global mode returns median download speed rankings (upload and latency are only available on country detail pages)
- For complete data including upload and latency, use country mode
- Country names should match Speedtest's naming (e.g. "United States" not "USA")
- Data is updated monthly by Speedtest.net based on speed tests taken worldwide
- Rate limited to 20 requests/minute

# Actor input Schema

## `mode` (type: `string`):

Mode: 'global' for full rankings, 'country' to scrape specific country detail pages.

## `countries` (type: `array`):

Country names to scrape in 'country' mode (e.g. \["United States", "Japan"]). Ignored in 'global' mode.

## `connectionType` (type: `string`):

Type of internet connection to scrape: 'fixed' for broadband, 'mobile' for cellular.

## `limit` (type: `integer`):

Maximum number of country rankings to return.

## `proxyConfiguration` (type: `object`):

Optional proxy configuration for requests.

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "mode": "global",
  "connectionType": "fixed",
  "limit": 200
}
```

# API

You can run this Actor programmatically using our API. Below are code examples in JavaScript, Python, and CLI, as well as the OpenAPI specification and MCP server setup.

## JavaScript example

```javascript
import { ApifyClient } from 'apify-client';
// Initialize the ApifyClient with your Apify API token
// Replace the '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>' with your token
const client = new ApifyClient({
    token: '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>',
});
// Prepare Actor input
const input = {};
// Run the Actor and wait for it to finish
const run = await client.actor("lulzasaur/speedtest-scraper").call(input);
// Fetch and print Actor results from the run's dataset (if any)
console.log('Results from dataset');
console.log(`💾 Check your data here: https://console.apify.com/storage/datasets/${run.defaultDatasetId}`);
const { items } = await client.dataset(run.defaultDatasetId).listItems();
items.forEach((item) => {
    console.dir(item);
});
