## What's an Apify Actor?

Actors are web data automations that power AI and operations. They run on the Apify platform to scrape websites, process data, connect APIs, and automate workflows.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.
Actors are written with capital "A".

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.
The best way to integrate Actors is as follows.

- **AI agents and MCP clients** — the [Apify MCP server](https://docs.apify.com/integrations/mcp.md) at `https://mcp.apify.com` (remote, streamable HTTP, OAuth on first use).
- **Agentic workflows and local Actor development** — [Agent Skills](https://apify.com/.well-known/agent-skills/index.json) with the [Apify CLI](https://docs.apify.com/cli/docs.md): `npm install -g apify-cli`, then `apify login`.
- **JavaScript/TypeScript projects** — the official [JS/TS client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md): `npm install apify-client`.
- **Python projects** — the official [Python client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md): `pip install apify-client`.
- **Any other language** — the [REST API](https://docs.apify.com/api/v2.md).

For usage examples, see the [API](#api) section below.

# README

## Virginia Health Professions License Search (VA DHP)

Search and verify licenses for **every health profession regulated in Virginia** — straight from the official Virginia Department of Health Professions (DHP) License Lookup database.

Covers **150+ occupation types**, including:

- Physicians & Surgeons (MD/DO), Physician Assistants
- Registered Nurses, Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN/CRNA/CNM), LPNs, Nurse Aides
- Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians
- Dentists, Dental Hygienists
- Psychologists, Licensed Professional Counselors, Clinical Social Workers, Substance Abuse Counselors
- Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Athletic Trainers
- Optometrists, Audiologists, Speech-Language Pathologists
- Veterinarians, Veterinary Technicians
- Funeral Service Providers, Assisted Living Facility Administrators, and many more

### What you get

Each record includes:

| Field | Description |
|-------|-------------|
| `name` | Licensee full name |
| `occupation` | Licensed occupation |
| `specialization` | Specialization (detail page, e.g. "Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist") |
| `licenseNumber` | 10-digit DHP license number |
| `licenseStatus` | Current / Expired status text (detail page) |
| `initialLicenseDate` | Date first licensed (detail page) |
| `expireDate` | License expiration date |
| `address` | Licensee mailing address (city, state, ZIP) |
| `additionalPublicInfo` | Whether public orders/disciplinary documents exist |
| `detailUrl` | Direct link to the official DHP detail page |

### Search modes

1. **By name** — `firstName` + `lastName` (min 2 characters each), optionally narrowed by `occupation`, `state`, `zip`, or `licenseStatus`.
2. **By license number** — exact 10-digit `licenseNumber` for a single-record verification lookup.

The `occupation` filter accepts a human name with partial matching ("pharmac" → Pharmacist) or the numeric DHP OccupationId.

> The DHP server rejects overly broad searches ("too many records") — provide both names or an occupation filter for common surnames.

### Use cases

- **Credentialing & compliance** — primary-source verification of Virginia health professionals
- **Healthcare staffing & locum agencies** — validate candidate licenses and expiration dates
- **Malpractice / liability insurers** — confirm active licensure and check for public orders
- **Telehealth networks** — verify multi-state practitioners licensed in Virginia
- **Pharma & med-device sales** — build targeted lists by occupation and geography

### Notes

- Registry includes out-of-state residents holding Virginia licenses; the address is the mailing address on file.
- Data window: all current licenses plus licenses expired since 2000-01-01.
- Set `includeDetails: false` to skip detail-page enrichment for faster, cheaper runs (list data only).

### Example input

```json
{
    "firstName": "John",
    "lastName": "Smith",
    "occupation": "Advanced Practice Registered Nurse",
    "licenseStatus": "current",
    "includeDetails": true
}
```

# Actor input Schema

## `lastName` (type: `string`):

Licensee last name, minimum 2 characters (e.g. "Smith"). Required unless licenseNumber is provided.

## `firstName` (type: `string`):

Licensee first name, minimum 2 characters (e.g. "John"). Broad searches are rejected by the server, so combining first + last name helps.

## `occupation` (type: `string`):

Optional occupation filter — a name like "Advanced Practice Registered Nurse", "Pharmacist", "Dentist" (partial match works, e.g. "pharmac") or the numeric DHP OccupationId. Leave empty to search all 150+ occupations.

## `licenseNumber` (type: `string`):

Exact 10-digit DHP license number (e.g. 0024166737). Returns that single record directly — ignores all other filters.

## `state` (type: `string`):

Optional 2-letter mailing-address state filter (e.g. "VA"). Note: VA-licensed professionals living out of state are included in the registry.

## `zip` (type: `string`):

Optional mailing-address ZIP filter.

## `licenseStatus` (type: `string`):

Filter by license status.

## `includeDetails` (type: `boolean`):

Fetch each record's detail page for license status, initial license date, and specialization (one extra request per record).

## `maxResults` (type: `integer`):

Maximum number of records to return. Set 0 for unlimited (the server itself rejects overly broad searches).

}
