Pay per usage

This Actor is paid per platform usage. The Actor is free to use, and you only pay for the Apify platform usage, which gets cheaper the higher subscription plan you have.

## What's an Apify Actor?

Actors are web data automations that power AI and operations. They run on the Apify platform to scrape websites, process data, connect APIs, and automate workflows.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.
Actors are written with capital "A".

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.
The best way to integrate Actors is as follows.

- **AI agents and MCP clients** — the [Apify MCP server](https://docs.apify.com/integrations/mcp.md) at `https://mcp.apify.com` (remote, streamable HTTP, OAuth on first use).
- **Agentic workflows and local Actor development** — [Agent Skills](https://apify.com/.well-known/agent-skills/index.json) with the [Apify CLI](https://docs.apify.com/cli/docs.md): `npm install -g apify-cli`, then `apify login`.
- **JavaScript/TypeScript projects** — the official [JS/TS client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md): `npm install apify-client`.
- **Python projects** — the official [Python client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md): `pip install apify-client`.
- **Any other language** — the [REST API](https://docs.apify.com/api/v2.md).

For usage examples, see the [API](#api) section below.

# README

## Product Recall Alert — FDA Drug, Food & Device Recalls

Search recent FDA recall enforcement reports across drugs, food, and medical
devices by keyword, severity class, or state. Get back the recalling firm,
what was recalled, why, how severe, and how it was distributed — one query
instead of checking three separate FDA report pages.

Built for compliance and quality teams tracking recalls in their supply
chain, retailers/distributors screening what they carry, and risk/insurance
teams monitoring a sector or region.

### Input

```json
{
  "category": "all",
  "keyword": "salmonella",
  "classification": "Class I",
  "state": "CA",
  "daysBack": 30,
  "maxResults": 25
}
```

| Field | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
| `category` | string | `all`, `drug`, `food`, or `device`. Default `all`. |
| `keyword` | string | Free-text search across the product description and recall reason. Leave blank to skip. |
| `classification` | string | FDA severity tier: `all`, `Class I` (most severe), `Class II`, or `Class III` (least severe). |
| `state` | string | Two-letter US state code — limits to recalls from firms based there. |
| `daysBack` | number | How many days back from today to search, by FDA report date. Default `30`, max `365`. |
| `maxResults` | number | Max recalls to return, most recent first. Default `25`, max `100`. |

### Output

One record per recall:

```json
{
  "category": "food",
  "recallNumber": "H-1180-2026",
  "eventId": "99387",
  "status": "Ongoing",
  "classification": "Class I",
  "recallingFirm": "Green Jeeva LLC",
  "brandName": null,
  "productDescription": "Organic Moringa Powder; 15kg/bag (bulk); Product code: GJ96",
  "productQuantity": "2,490 kg",
  "reasonForRecall": "Moringa Powder ingredient positive for salmonella",
  "distributionPattern": "Product was distributed to 4 different consignees...",
  "voluntaryMandated": "Voluntary: Firm initiated",
  "city": "Cerritos",
  "state": "CA",
  "country": "United States",
  "recallInitiationDate": "20260708",
  "reportDate": "20260729"
}
```

### How it works

Direct calls to the official [openFDA](https://open.fda.gov/) enforcement
API (`api.fda.gov`) — the same public dataset behind FDA.gov's own recall
search, covering drugs, food, and medical devices with one consistent
schema. No proxy, no login, no scraping.

### Pricing note

Billed per **search**, not per recall returned — one charge whether the
search returns 1 recall or 100.

# Actor input Schema

## `category` (type: `string`):

Which FDA-regulated product category to search.

FDA's own severity tier: Class I = reasonable chance of serious harm/death, Class II = temporary/reversible harm, Class III = unlikely to cause harm.

## `state` (type: `string`):

Two-letter US state code to limit to recalls from firms based there (e.g. "CA"). Leave blank for all states.

## `daysBack` (type: `integer`):

How many days back from today to search, based on FDA report date.

## `maxResults` (type: `integer`):

Maximum number of recalls to return, most recent first.
