## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## European Company Registry Search: France, Norway, Finland, UK

Search the official company registers of France, Norway, Finland and the United Kingdom in one run and get one clean, normalized record per company. Give it company names, registry numbers (SIREN/SIRET, Norwegian organisation numbers, Finnish Business IDs, UK company numbers) or just filters such as industry code, postal code and "registered after" date. Every record has the same fields whatever the country: legal name, registry ID, legal form, status, incorporation date, address, industry code and description, employee range, website, officers when the register publishes them, a link to the official register page and the licence and attribution text of the source. The data comes only from the governments' own open data APIs, with no login, and each API's rate limit is respected.

Data: Etalab/INSEE, Brønnøysundregistrene (NLOD), PRH, Companies House.

### Countries and sources

| Country | Register | Official API | Licence | Officers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| France (`FR`) | INSEE Sirene + INPI RNE | [recherche-entreprises.api.gouv.fr](https://recherche-entreprises.api.gouv.fr) (DINUM) | Licence Ouverte / Etalab 2.0 | Yes (dirigeants) |
| Norway (`NO`) | Enhetsregisteret, Brønnøysundregistrene | [data.brreg.no](https://data.brreg.no/enhetsregisteret/api/dokumentasjon/en/index.html) | NLOD 2.0 | Yes (public roles list) |
| Finland (`FI`) | YTJ / Trade Register, PRH | [avoindata.prh.fi](https://avoindata.prh.fi/en) | PRH open data terms (cite the source), CC BY 4.0 | Not published in the open API |
| United Kingdom (`UK`) | Companies House | [Public Data API](https://developer.company-information.service.gov.uk/) | Open Government Licence v3.0 | Yes (current officers) |

The UK needs a free Companies House API key (it takes a few minutes to create one). Without a key the run simply skips the UK and says so in the log.

### What data you get

| Field | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
| `country` / `countryName` | string | `FR`, `NO`, `FI` or `UK`, and the country name |
| `registryId` / `registryIdType` | string | SIREN, organisation number, Business ID (Y-tunnus) or company number |
| `name` | string | Current registered name |
| `legalForm` / `legalFormCode` | string | Legal form as the register names it (for example `Allmennaksjeselskap` / `ASA`, `Public limited company`) |
| `status` | string | Normalized: `active`, `inactive`, `liquidation`, `bankrupt`, `insolvency` or `reorganisation` |
| `statusDetail` / `isActive` | string / boolean | Status in the register's own words, and a simple true/false |
| `incorporationDate` / `dissolutionDate` | string | `YYYY-MM-DD` |
| `street`, `postalCode`, `city`, `region`, `addressCountry`, `fullAddress` | string | Registered (head office) address |
| `industryCode` / `industryDescription` / `industryCodeSystem` | string | NAF (FR), SN/NACE (NO), TOL (FI) or SIC 2007 (UK) code with its description |
| `employeeRange` / `employeeCount` | string / number | Employee band (FR, NO). Norway also gives the exact count |
| `latestRevenue` / `latestNetIncome` / `financialYear` / `currency` | number / string | Latest published revenue and net income (France, when available) |
| `shareCapital` / `currency` | number / string | Share capital (Norway) |
| `website` | string | Company website when registered (NO, FI) |
| `vatNumber` | string | VAT number when the register shows VAT registration (NO) |
| `headOfficeId` | string | SIRET of the French head office |
| `officers` | array | With **Include officers** on: `name`, `role`, `type` (person/company), `registryId`, `birthDate` (year and month only), `appointedOn`, `nationality` |
| `registryUrl` | string | The company's page on the official register website |
| `sourceUrl` | string | The API URL the record came from |
| `sourceName` / `sourceLicence` / `sourceLicenceUrl` / `attribution` | string | Where the data comes from and the attribution text the licence asks you to show |
| `searchTerm` | string | The search term that found the company (null for ID lookups) |
| `summary` | string | One plain-text paragraph about the company, handy for LLMs and AI tools |
| `scrapedAt` | string | ISO timestamp |

Descriptions (legal form, industry) are given in the language the register publishes: French for France, Norwegian for Norway, English for Finland and the UK.

### How to use

1. Pick the countries.
2. Add company names, company IDs, or both. You can also leave names empty and use only filters to get lists of companies.
3. Optionally set filters: industry codes, postal codes, city, active only, incorporated after.
4. Turn on **Include officers** if you need directors and board members.
5. For UK results, paste your Companies House API key.
6. Run, then download the results as JSON, CSV or Excel, or read them through the API.

**Max companies per search term** applies to each search term in each country. Company ID lookups always return their company.

Search names across all four countries:

```json
{
  "countries": ["FR", "NO", "FI", "UK"],
  "searchTerms": ["Nokia", "Equinor"],
  "maxItems": 20,
  "companiesHouseApiKey": "your-free-key"
}
```

Look up exact companies with their officers (the country is detected from the ID format):

```json
{
  "companyIds": ["923609016", "0112038-9", "380129866", "00445790"],
  "includeOfficers": true,
  "companiesHouseApiKey": "your-free-key"
}
```

A 9-digit number can be both a French SIREN and a Norwegian organisation number. The Actor checks both checksums and tries every country that fits. Add a prefix such as `"NO:923609016"` or `"FR:380129866"` to force one country.

New IT companies registered since September 2026 in Norway and Finland (a lead list):

```json
{
  "countries": ["NO", "FI"],
  "industryCodes": ["62"],
  "incorporatedAfter": "2026-09-01",
  "maxItems": 200
}
```

Industry codes: a 2-digit NACE division such as `"62"` works in every country (it is expanded to all matching NAF and SIC codes). You can also give national codes: NAF `"62.01Z"` (France), SN `"62.010"` (Norway), TOL `"62010"` (Finland) or SIC `"62012"` (UK), optionally with a country prefix like `"UK:62012"`. Postal codes are matched to the countries whose format they fit (5 digits for France and Finland, 4 for Norway, UK postcodes for the UK).

#### Getting a Companies House API key

1. Register at [developer.company-information.service.gov.uk](https://developer.company-information.service.gov.uk/).
2. Create an application, then add a **REST** API key to it.
3. Paste the key into **Companies House API key**. It is stored as a secret input.

Companies House allows 600 requests per 5 minutes per key, and the Actor stays under that pace. A UK name search reads each company's profile to get its SIC code, so it uses about one request per company (two with officers).

### Pricing

Pay per result: you pay **$2 per 1,000 companies** saved, plus a small fee per run start. Results that the registers do not return (for example a company ID that does not exist) are not charged. You can set a maximum charge per run in the Apify Console and the Actor stops when it is reached.

### Use cases

- **KYB and compliance checks**: confirm a supplier's or customer's legal name, status, address and directors against the official register, with the licence and source link included for your audit trail.
- **Lead generation**: pull newly registered companies by industry and region, for example every new software company in Oslo this month.
- **CRM and data enrichment**: add registry IDs, industry codes, employee bands and websites to company lists.
- **Market research**: count and map companies by industry code and location across several countries with one schema.
- **AI agents and MCP tools**: the flat records and the `summary` field are easy to feed into LLM workflows, and the Actor can be called as a tool from your own AI apps.

### FAQ

**Is it legal?**
Yes. The Actor only uses official open data APIs that the registers publish for reuse: France's API Recherche d'entreprises (Licence Ouverte 2.0), Norway's Enhetsregisteret API (NLOD 2.0), Finland's PRH open data (reuse allowed when the source is mentioned) and the Companies House Public Data API (Open Government Licence v3.0). It needs no login, uses no scraping of websites and keeps to each API's published rate limit. Officer data is public register information; it still counts as personal data under GDPR and UK GDPR, so you are responsible for having a lawful basis for how you use it. Keep the attribution when you republish the data (see below).

**What attribution do I need to show?**
Each record carries an `attribution` field with the text the licence asks for. In short: "Data: Etalab/INSEE, Brønnøysundregistrene (NLOD), PRH, Companies House". In full:

- France: Source: Etalab / INSEE Sirene / INPI RNE via recherche-entreprises.api.gouv.fr, Licence Ouverte 2.0.
- Norway: Contains data under the Norwegian licence for Open Government data (NLOD) distributed by Brønnøysundregistrene.
- Finland: Source: Finnish Patent and Registration Office (PRH), YTJ open data. Do not use PRH or YTJ logos.
- UK: Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0 (Companies House).

**Why does the UK need an API key?**
Companies House gives free keys to every developer and requires one for every request. The key is yours, so the UK rate limit (600 requests per 5 minutes) is yours too.

**Why are there no officers for Finland?**
PRH's open YTJ API does not publish board members or managing directors. The `officers` list is empty for Finnish companies.

**How fresh is the data?**
Every run queries the live APIs. France's search index is updated daily, Norway and Finland in near real time, Companies House continuously.

**Do I need a proxy?**
No. These are public APIs built for programmatic access. Note that France limits requests per IP (7 per second) and per network, and the Actor stays under that limit.

### Limitations

- France: the open search API covers companies whose data is public ("diffusible"); companies that asked INSEE to hide their data are not returned. It has no date or city filter, so "Incorporated after" and "City" are checked on the first 1,000 results of each French search. The postal code filter matches any establishment of the company, not only the head office. Name search is fuzzy and may return similar names.
- Norway: one query is run per industry code, and each query can page through at most 10,000 results (an API limit). Roles that need ID-porten/Maskinporten access (national ID numbers) are not used. Officer birth dates are cut to year and month.
- Finland: no officers. Name search also matches former and auxiliary names; the Actor ranks exact and prefix matches first within the first 1,000 results.
- UK: needs your API key; officer lists include current officers only.
- Germany and the Netherlands are not included: their registers do not offer free open APIs for this use.

# Actor input Schema

## `countries` (type: `array`):

Which national registers to search. The UK needs a free Companies House API key (see below); without one the UK is skipped.

## `searchTerms` (type: `array`):

Company names or keywords to search for. Each term is searched in every selected country.

## `companyIds` (type: `array`):

Look up exact companies by registry number: French SIREN (9 digits) or SIRET (14 digits), Norwegian organisation number (9 digits), Finnish Business ID / Y-tunnus (1234567-8) or UK company number (8 characters, e.g. 00445790 or SC123456). The country is detected from the format; add a prefix like "NO:" or "FR:" to force one.

## `industryCodes` (type: `array`):

Optional. A 2-digit NACE division such as "62" (IT services) works in every country. You can also give national codes: NAF like "62.01Z" (France), SN like "62.010" (Norway), TOL like "62010" (Finland) or SIC like "62012" (UK). Prefix with a country ("FR:62.01Z") to apply a code to one country only.

## `postalCodes` (type: `array`):

Optional. Only companies whose registered address has one of these postal codes, for example 75008 (Paris) or 0150 (Oslo).

## `city` (type: `string`):

Optional. Only companies registered in this town or city, for example Oslo, Helsinki or Manchester.

## `activeOnly` (type: `boolean`):

Skip companies that are dissolved, ceased, bankrupt or in liquidation.

## `incorporatedAfter` (type: `string`):

Optional. Only companies registered on or after this date (YYYY-MM-DD). Good for new-company lead lists. Leave the company names empty to get the newest registrations matching your other filters.

## `includeOfficers` (type: `boolean`):

Add the current directors and board members where the register publishes them (France, Norway, UK). Finland's open data API does not publish officers. Adds one request per company in Norway and the UK.

## `maxItems` (type: `integer`):

Maximum number of companies saved for each search term in each country (or for the filters, if you give no names). Company ID lookups always return their company.

## `companiesHouseApiKey` (type: `string`):

Needed for UK results only. Get a free key in a few minutes at https://developer.company-information.service.gov.uk/ (create an application, then a REST API key). Without a key the UK is skipped.

## `proxyConfiguration` (type: `object`):

Optional. These are official open APIs and work without a proxy.

Clients without OAuth support can send an `Authorization: Bearer <APIFY_API_TOKEN>` header instead, using a token from API & Integrations in Apify Console (https://console.apify.com/settings/integrations).
