## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Grants.gov Opportunities Feed: New & Forecasted Federal Grants (API, no key)

Get **every new US federal grant opportunity the day it is posted on Grants.gov**, plus **forecasted grants** before they open, from the **official Grants.gov API**. Filter by keyword, agency (HHS, NIH, NSF, DOE, USDA, ED, EPA, DOJ...), **eligible applicant** (nonprofit, small business, tribal, city, county, school district, university), funding category and Assistance Listing (CFDA) number. Turn on **enrichment** to add **award ceiling and floor, estimated total funding, number of awards, cost sharing, eligibility details and a plain-text description**. Schedule it in *new since last run* mode and each run delivers only opportunities you have not seen yet, including **forecasts that have just opened for applications**.

### Who it's for

- **Grant writers and grant consultants:** a daily list of new funding opportunities for each client, filtered by eligibility and category, with deadlines and days left.
- **Nonprofits, tribes, cities, counties and school districts:** never miss a new NOFO you are eligible for; see forecasts months before they open.
- **Universities and research offices:** new NIH, NSF, DOE, USDA-NIFA and DoD research funding by Assistance Listing.
- **Govtech, edtech and healthtech sales teams:** new federal funding is a buying signal; agencies and grantees spend it on products and services. Pipe the feed into your CRM.
- **Grant-search platforms, newsletters and AI agents:** clean JSON for databases, Slack alerts, Google Sheets or LLM pipelines.

### Why this Actor

- **Feed, not a dump:** stateless lookback window by default, or **new since last run** with per-schedule history, so a daily schedule pays only for new opportunities.
- **Forecast to posted tracking:** a forecast you already received is delivered again with `changeType: "forecast-now-posted"` when the full opportunity opens.
- **Smart filters:** department codes expand to every sub-agency (`HHS` covers NIH, CDC, HRSA, SAMHSA...); agency names work too; eligibility accepts plain words like `nonprofit` or `small business`.
- **Deadline helpers:** `daysUntilClose` on every record and an optional `closingWithinDays` filter.
- **Pay only for what you need:** the base record is cheap; award amounts and eligibility text are an opt-in extra event.
- **Official source, polite:** Grants.gov public API (no key, no scraping of web pages), at most about 3 requests per second with retries.
- **Fast:** the default run returns 30 opportunities in about a second at 512 MB.

### Quick start

1. Click **Start** with the default input. You get the 30 newest grant opportunities (posted and forecasted) from the last 7 days.
2. Nonprofit health funding with amounts: `{"eligibilities": ["nonprofit"], "fundingCategories": ["Health"], "enrichDetails": true, "postedWithinDays": 14}`
3. NIH and NSF research: `{"agencies": ["HHS-NIH11", "NSF"], "postedWithinDays": 30, "maxItems": 200}`
4. Keyword watch: `{"keyword": "broadband", "statuses": ["posted"], "closingWithinDays": 60}`
5. By Assistance Listing: `{"assistanceListings": ["93.243", "84.305"], "postedWithinDays": 90}`

#### Schedule tip (daily feed)

Create an Apify **Schedule** (for example daily at 7:00 am ET) with:

```json
{ "mode": "sinceLastRun", "stateKey": "nonprofit-health-daily", "eligibilities": ["nonprofit"], "fundingCategories": ["Health"], "enrichDetails": true, "maxItems": 500 }
```

Use one `stateKey` per schedule. Connect the run to Slack, email, Google Sheets, Airtable, Make, Zapier, n8n or a webhook via Apify integrations.

### Pricing

Pay per event (Apify takes care of billing; you only pay for what is delivered):

| Event | Price | Charged |
|---|---|---|
| `apify-actor-start` | $0.005 | once per run |
| `grant-record` | $0.003 | per grant opportunity delivered |
| `grant-enriched` | $0.005 | extra per opportunity enriched with award ceiling/floor, funding and eligibility details (only when `enrichDetails` is on) |

A default test run (30 opportunities, no enrichment) costs about $0.095. A daily all-agency alert (~10 new/day, enriched) costs about $0.085/day. `maxItems` and Apify's *max cost per run* cap your spend; the Actor stops delivering when your budget is reached, so you are never charged for more than you set. No separate platform-usage charges: compute is included in the event prices.

### Data source and notes

- [Grants.gov API](https://www.grants.gov/api/api-guide) (`search2` and `fetchOpportunity`, no key). Grants.gov listings are public US government information. This Actor is not affiliated with or endorsed by Grants.gov or HHS. Always confirm eligibility, deadlines and requirements on Grants.gov before applying.
- Agency contact names, emails and phone numbers are intentionally **not** included; use the `url` to reach the official listing.
- Award amounts are as entered by the agency; some use `1` or `0` as a placeholder floor.
- Different from a Federal Register feed: this covers the funding opportunities themselves (NOFOs and forecasts) with eligibility and award data.

### FAQ

**Does it include closed or archived grants?** No. It is a feed of open (posted) and forecasted opportunities.
**How fresh is it?** Live from Grants.gov at run time; agencies post throughout US business days.
**Can I search all currently open grants, not just new ones?** Yes: set `postedWithinDays` to 365 and raise `maxItems`.
**Do I need a Grants.gov account or API key?** No.

# Actor input Schema

## `mode` (type: `string`):

window (default): opportunities posted in the last N days, no saved state. sinceLastRun: only opportunities not delivered before for this State key (plus forecasts that have since been officially posted); use this for daily schedules.

## `postedWithinDays` (type: `integer`):

Opportunities posted (or forecast) on grants.gov in the last N calendar days (US Eastern). Also the first-run window in sinceLastRun mode. In window mode an empty result is retried once with 30 days.

## `keyword` (type: `string`):

grants.gov keyword search, e.g. "rural broadband", "opioid", "workforce", "artificial intelligence", or an opportunity number prefix such as PAR-25.

## `statuses` (type: `array`):

posted (open for applications) and/or forecasted (announced ahead of time). Empty = both.

## `agencies` (type: `array`):

grants.gov agency codes or names. A department code expands to all its sub-agencies: HHS, HHS-NIH11, HHS-CDC, DOE, NSF, USDA, USDA-NIFA, ED, EPA, DOJ codes like USDOJ-OJP. Names such as "National Institutes of Health" also work. Empty = all.

## `eligibilities` (type: `array`):

Who can apply (any match). Friendly names or grants.gov codes: nonprofit (12,13), small business (23), for profit (22,23), state (00), county (01), city (02), school district (05), university (06,20), tribal (07,11), public housing (08), individuals (21), unrestricted (99). Empty = any.

## `fundingCategories` (type: `array`):

Category names or codes (any match): Health (HL), Education (ED), Science and Technology (ST), Environment (ENV), Agriculture (AG), Arts (AR), Community Development (CD), Energy (EN), Housing (HO), Transportation (T), Law, Justice and Legal Services (LJL), Income Security and Social Services (ISS), Employment, Labor and Training (ELT), IIJA (IIJ) and more. Empty = all.

## `fundingInstruments` (type: `array`):

grant (G), cooperative agreement (CA), procurement contract (PC), other (O). Empty = all.

## `assistanceListings` (type: `array`):

e.g. 93.243, 84.305, 10.310. Opportunities listing any of these numbers. Empty = all.

## `closingWithinDays` (type: `integer`):

Optional: only posted opportunities whose application deadline is within N days (forecasts are kept). Leave empty for no deadline filter.

## `enrichDetails` (type: `boolean`):

Fetches each opportunity's full grants.gov record: award ceiling and floor, estimated total funding, expected number of awards, cost sharing, eligible applicant types, eligibility details, funding categories and instruments, plain-text description, forecast dates. Charged as one grant-enriched event per opportunity.

## `maxItems` (type: `integer`):

Hard cap on delivered opportunities (also caps your spend). Default is small so a first run is quick and cheap; raise it for production.

## `stateKey` (type: `string`):

Name of the saved search for sinceLastRun mode. Each key keeps its own history, so use one key per schedule.
