## What's an Apify Actor?

Actors are web data automations that power AI and operations. They run on the Apify platform to scrape websites, process data, connect APIs, and automate workflows.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.
Actors are written with capital "A".

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.
The best way to integrate Actors is as follows.

- **AI agents and MCP clients** — the [Apify MCP server](https://docs.apify.com/integrations/mcp.md) at `https://mcp.apify.com` (remote, streamable HTTP, OAuth on first use).
- **Agentic workflows and local Actor development** — [Agent Skills](https://apify.com/.well-known/agent-skills/index.json) with the [Apify CLI](https://docs.apify.com/cli/docs.md): `npm install -g apify-cli`, then `apify login`.
- **JavaScript/TypeScript projects** — the official [JS/TS client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md): `npm install apify-client`.
- **Python projects** — the official [Python client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md): `pip install apify-client`.
- **Any other language** — the [REST API](https://docs.apify.com/api/v2.md).

For usage examples, see the [API](#api) section below.

# README

## Yahoo Finance Data Actor

Extract public Yahoo Finance quote metadata, historical OHLCV price bars, or symbol-search matches into an Apify dataset. Use it for market research, portfolio dashboards, backtesting inputs, and agent workflows that need compact structured finance records.

### Operations

| Operation | Required input | Output |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `quote` | `symbols` | One current-market metadata record per symbol |
| `history` | `symbols` | Timestamped OHLCV bars using `range` and `interval` |
| `search` | `query` | Yahoo Finance symbol matches with name, exchange, type, sector, and industry when supplied |

Example quote input:

```json
{"operation":"quote","symbols":["AAPL","MSFT","BTC-USD"]}
```

Example history input:

```json
{"operation":"history","symbols":["AAPL"],"range":"1y","interval":"1d","maxResults":500}
```

### Output

Every dataset item has a `recordType` (`quote`, `history`, or `search`) and `symbol`. Quote and history records include market name, currency, exchange, and price fields. History records additionally include `timestamp`, `open`, `high`, `low`, `close`, and `volume`. Search records include `shortName`, `quoteType`, `sector`, and `industry` where Yahoo supplies them. A `SUMMARY` key-value record contains delivery counts and warnings.

### Pricing

| Event | Price |
| --- | ---: |
| Actor start | $0.00005 per run |
| Dataset record | $0.0005 per delivered record |

For example, a quote run for three symbols costs three record events plus the start event. The live Apify monetization configuration is authoritative.

### Limits and reliability

The actor uses public Yahoo Finance chart and search endpoints with bounded requests and a 20-second per-request timeout. It does not log in, bypass challenges, or use private cookies. Yahoo may return empty results, rate-limit requests, or restrict intraday history based on its own retention rules; those conditions are reported in `SUMMARY` and the terminal status. Results are capped by `maxResults` (1–5,000) and symbols are capped at 50.

Yahoo Finance data is provided for informational and research use. Check Yahoo Finance terms and applicable market-data licensing requirements before using results commercially or redistributing them.

# Actor input Schema

## `operation` (type: `string`):

Use quote for current market metadata, history for OHLCV bars, or search to find symbols by company name. Example: history.

## `symbols` (type: `array`):

Use for quote or history. Enter Yahoo Finance symbols such as AAPL, MSFT, BTC-USD, or ^GSPC. Maximum 50 symbols.

## `query` (type: `string`):

Use only with search to find Yahoo Finance symbols by company, fund, index, or cryptocurrency name. Example: renewable energy.

## `range` (type: `string`):

Use with history to select a Yahoo Finance range. Examples: 1mo, 1y, 5y, max. Ignored for quote and search.

## `interval` (type: `string`):

Use with history for bar size. Intraday intervals are limited by Yahoo Finance retention; daily is the safest default.

## `maxResults` (type: `integer`):

Maximum dataset records to deliver. History is capped across all requested symbols; search is capped to its returned matches.

## `includePrePost` (type: `boolean`):

Include pre-market and after-hours chart data when Yahoo Finance supplies it. Applies to quote and history.

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "operation": "quote",
  "symbols": [
    "AAPL"
  ],
  "query": "Apple",
  "range": "1mo",
  "interval": "1d",
  "maxResults": 100,
  "includePrePost": false
}
```

You can run this Actor programmatically using our API. Below are code examples in JavaScript, Python, and CLI, as well as the OpenAPI specification and MCP server setup.

## JavaScript example

```javascript
import { ApifyClient } from 'apify-client';
// Initialize the ApifyClient with your Apify API token
// Replace the '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>' with your token
const client = new ApifyClient({
    token: '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>',
});
// Prepare Actor input
const input = {};
// Run the Actor and wait for it to finish
const run = await client.actor("muhammadafzal/yahoo-finance").call(input);
// Fetch and print Actor results from the run's dataset (if any)
console.log('Results from dataset');
console.log(`💾 Check your data here: https://console.apify.com/storage/datasets/${run.defaultDatasetId}`);
const { items } = await client.dataset(run.defaultDatasetId).listItems();
items.forEach((item) => {
    console.dir(item);
});
