## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Academic Research Monitor

Search **scholarly papers across six sources in one run** — **OpenAlex, Semantic Scholar, Crossref, Europe PMC, arXiv and DBLP** — merged into **one clean schema** and **deduplicated by DOI and title**. Get title, authors, year, DOI, abstract, citations, venue, and open-access links. No API key, nothing to configure.

One query, one deduplicated list — instead of running six scrapers and merging the results yourself.

### Features

- **Six sources, one schema** — every paper has the same fields no matter where it came from.
- **Deduplication** — the same paper found in several sources becomes one record that lists all of them.
- **Rich metadata** — abstracts, AI TLDR summaries (when available), citation counts and open-access PDF links.
- **Year filter** — keep only recent work.

### Use cases

- **Literature reviews** — one deduplicated corpus across all major indexes.
- **Research monitoring** — schedule daily on your topics and catch new papers.
- **Citation tracking** — sort by citation count to find the most influential work.
- **R\&D and competitive intelligence** — follow what is being published in your field.

### Input

| Field | Type | Description |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `searchQueries` | string\[] | Search topics; each is searched in every selected source. |
| `sources` | string\[] | `openalex`, `semanticscholar`, `crossref`, `europepmc`, `arxiv`, `dblp`. Default: all. |
| `maxItemsPerSource` | integer | Max results from each source per query, before dedup. Default 50. |
| `fromYear` | integer | Only works from this year onward. |
| `dedupe` | boolean | Merge duplicates across sources. Default `true`. |

#### Examples

```json
{
  "searchQueries": ["large language models"],
  "maxItemsPerSource": 50
}
```

```json
{
  "searchQueries": ["CRISPR gene therapy"],
  "sources": ["openalex", "europepmc", "crossref"],
  "fromYear": 2024,
  "maxItemsPerSource": 100
}
```

### Output

Each record is one paper:

| Field | Description |
| --- | --- |
| `title` / `authors` / `year` | Title, author names and publication year. |
| `doi` / `url` | DOI and main link. |
| `abstract` / `tldr` | Abstract and short AI summary when available. |
| `citationCount` / `venue` / `type` | Citation count, journal or conference, and work type. |
| `openAccessUrl` | Free full-text link when available. |
| `sources` / `sourceUrls` | Which sources found the paper, with a link in each. |
| `query` / `scrapedAt` | The query that matched and scrape time. |

#### Example

```json
{
  "title": "NIH Image to ImageJ: 25 years of image analysis.",
  "authors": [
    "Caroline A Schneider",
    "Wayne S. Rasband",
    "Kevin W. Eliceiri"
  ],
  "year": 2012,
  "doi": "10.1038/nmeth.2089",
  "abstract": "For the past 25 years NIH Image and ImageJ software have been pioneers as open tools for the analysis of scientific images. We discuss the origins, ch...",
  "tldr": null,
  "citationCount": 67169,
  "venue": "Nature Methods",
  "type": "article",
  "openAccessUrl": "https://www.nature.com/articles/nmeth.2089.pdf",
  "sources": [
    "openalex",
    "europepmc"
  ],
  "sourceUrls": {
    "openalex": "https://openalex.org/W2099540110",
    "europepmc": "https://europepmc.org/article/MED/22930834"
  },
  "url": "https://doi.org/10.1038/nmeth.2089",
  "scrapedAt": "2026-09-23T22:05:48.241Z",
  "query": "large language models"
}
```

Download the dataset as **JSON, CSV, Excel, or XML**, or pull it via the Apify API.

### Pricing

Pay-per-event: **$0.01 per run start** (per GB of run memory) plus **$1.00 per 1,000 papers**. You only pay for papers actually returned. See the **Pricing** tab for current rates.
