## Pricing

Pay per usage

This Actor is paid per platform usage. The Actor is free to use, and you only pay for the Apify platform usage, which gets cheaper the higher subscription plan you have.

## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Hacker News Who's Hiring Jobs Scraper (Parsed)

Turn the monthly Hacker News **"Ask HN: Who is hiring?"** thread into clean, structured job rows: company, role, location, work mode (remote, onsite, hybrid), job type, salary, visa sponsorship, tech stack, contact emails, company URL and links. It also supports the **"Who wants to be hired?"** and **"Freelancer? Seeking freelancer?"** threads.

- Uses the official public HN Algolia API. No login, cookies, proxies or browser.
- Covers up to 24 months of threads in one run.
- Runs in seconds and costs very little.
- Header parser handles the common HN formats: `Company | Role | Location | ...` with pipe, dash, bullet or slash separators, plus `Company: / Role: / Location:` lines.

### Use cases

- **Recruiters and agencies:** leads with salary, stack and direct hiring-manager emails.
- **Job seekers:** filter remote Python or Rust roles with salary in one click, then export to CSV or Google Sheets.
- **Job boards and newsletters:** a fresh monthly feed of startup jobs to import.
- **Market research:** track salary ranges, remote share and tech-stack demand month over month.
- **Sales and lead gen:** find funded startups that are actively hiring, along with their websites.

### Parsing quality

Tested on 600 real posts across 3 months (Aug to Oct 2026). On the 564 posts flagged `isJobPost`: company 100%, location 98%, work mode 94%, role 79%, salary 40% (many posts don't list a salary).

### Pricing

Pay per event, no subscription:

- **$0.005** per run start
- **$0.002** per job result

1,000 jobs cost about $2. You also pay Apify platform usage, which is tiny for this actor because it calls a lightweight API and runs no browser. Set a max charge per run in the run options to cap your spend.

### FAQ

**Is this legal?** Yes. The actor reads publicly posted data through Hacker News' official public Algolia API. Respect the posters: use contact emails only to apply for or ask about the job, not for spam.

**How fresh is the data?** HN posts a new thread on the first weekday of each month, and the actor always reads the live thread, so new comments show up on every run.

**Why are some fields null?** Posts are free text. Fields are filled only when the poster includes them. The full `text` is always included so nothing is lost.

**How do I get only real job posts?** Filter on `isJobPost = true`.

**Can I schedule it?** Yes. Use Apify Schedules (for example weekly) and connect the output to Google Sheets, Slack, a webhook or Zapier/Make.

**Can I export to CSV or Excel?** Yes, from the dataset tab, or through the Apify API.

**Something is parsed wrong?** Open an issue on the Issues tab with the post URL and I will improve the parser.
