## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Crypto Market Intelligence — Prices, Trends & AI

**Hand it a list of coins, get back a clean market-intelligence sheet.** Drop in any coins or tokens — names, symbols or CoinGecko ids like `bitcoin`, `ETH`, `solana` — and this Actor pulls **live market data from CoinGecko** (price, market cap, rank, 24h/7d/30d change, volume, supply, all-time high) and adds an **AI read on momentum and positioning** for each one. One row per coin, ready for your spreadsheet, dashboard or pipeline.

It is a fast, structured **crypto prices API** and **CoinGecko alternative** for traders, researchers and web3 data teams — market **data**, not financial advice.

***

### The flow

```
   coins / tokens            CoinGecko public API              per-coin record
   ["bitcoin",          →    resolve id → markets         →    price · market cap · rank
    "ETH","solana"]          (+ optional 30d chart)             change 24h/7d/30d · supply
                                      ↓                          + AI momentum & positioning
                                 OpenAI read
```

1. **Resolve** each input (id, symbol or name) to a CoinGecko coin id — the full coin list is fetched once and cached.
2. **Fetch markets** in batches: price, market cap, market-cap rank, 24h volume, 24h/7d/30d change, circulating / max supply, all-time high.
3. **Optional 30d trend**: pull a daily price series to derive trend direction and volatility.
4. **AI read** (OpenAI `gpt-4o-mini`): momentum, positioning, risk notes and a two-sentence summary — grounded only in the numbers.

Requests to CoinGecko are **paced and retried** (low concurrency, spacing between calls, backoff on `429`) so the free tier's rate limits don't break your run.

***

### What you get per coin

1. **`id`, `symbol`, `name`** — the resolved CoinGecko coin.
2. **`price`** — current price in your chosen `vsCurrency`.
3. **`marketCap`, `marketCapRank`** — size and league-table position.
4. **`volume24h`** — 24-hour trading volume.
5. **`change24h`, `change7d`, `change30d`** — percent price change over each window.
6. **`circulatingSupply`, `maxSupply`** — supply picture (unlimited issuance shows as `null` max supply).
7. **`ath`, `athChangePct`, `atl`** — all-time high / low and how far off the high it trades.
8. **`trend30d`** *(optional)* — `startPrice`, `endPrice`, `changePct`, `volatilityPct` from a 30-day daily series.
9. **`momentum`** — `strong-down` · `down` · `flat` · `up` · `strong-up`, derived from the percent changes.
10. **`positioning`** — one factual sentence on rank, market-cap tier and supply context.
11. **`riskNotes`** — data-grounded flags (high volatility, thin volume vs cap, far below ATH, unlimited supply…).
12. **`summary`** — two factual sentences tying the numbers together.

> **Not financial advice.** Every record carries a `note` making this explicit. The AI interprets the numbers it is given — it never predicts prices and never tells you to buy, sell or hold. Use it as a **data signal**, not a recommendation.

***

### Three ways people use it

- **Crypto research & screening** — pull `market cap data`, rank and 24h/7d/30d change across a watchlist to screen for momentum, size tier or distance from all-time high, with a written read on each `token analysis`.
- **Portfolio & market monitoring** — run your holdings on a schedule and log price, volume and momentum over time; a lightweight **crypto prices API** feed without wiring raw endpoints yourself.
- **Web3 data pipelines** — a drop-in **CoinGecko alternative** data step that outputs clean, structured JSON for dashboards, research notes, bots and downstream Actors.

### Input

| Field | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| `coins` | array | **Required.** Coin names, symbols or CoinGecko ids — `"bitcoin"`, `"ETH"`, `"solana"`. One per line. |
| `vsCurrency` | string | Quote currency. Default `usd` (also `eur`, `btc`, …). |
| `includeMarketChart` | boolean | Pull a 30-day daily price series per coin for trend + volatility. Default `false` (one extra call per coin). |
| `maxResults` | integer | Cap how many coins to analyze. Default `200`. |
| `maxConcurrency` | integer | Coins processed in parallel. Default `2` — keep low, CoinGecko's free tier rate-limits hard. |
| `model` | string | Override the OpenAI model. Default `gpt-4o-mini`. |

#### Minimal input example

```json
{
  "coins": ["bitcoin", "ethereum", "solana"]
}
```

### Pay-per-event pricing

This Actor uses **pay-per-event** billing.

| Event | Price | Charged when |
|---|---|---|
| `coin-analyzed` | **$0.10** | Once per coin whose live market data was pulled and summarized with AI. |

The Actor logs its OpenAI token usage and estimated AI cost per coin at the end of every run, so the event price always stays safely above the model cost.

***

### Data source

Market data comes from the **[CoinGecko public API](https://www.coingecko.com/en/api)** (free tier, no key required). Requests are paced and retried to respect its rate limits. If you have a CoinGecko demo API key, set `COINGECKO_API_KEY` on the Actor and it will be sent for higher limits — but the Actor works fully without one.

***

### Setup

The AI layer calls the OpenAI API. Set the environment variable / secret **`OPENAI_API_KEY`** on the Actor. *(Optional: set `COINGECKO_API_KEY` for a CoinGecko demo key.)*

***

### Use it from an AI agent (Apify MCP server)

This Actor is available through the [Apify MCP server](https://mcp.apify.com), so AI agents (Claude, ChatGPT, or anything that speaks MCP) can call it as a tool — hand it a list of `coins` and read back structured market data with an AI momentum read — with no custom integration code.

***

### Run it locally

```bash
npm install
## put your input in storage/key_value_stores/default/INPUT.json
export OPENAI_API_KEY=sk-...
apify run -p
```

***

### A note on data

This Actor reports **public market data** from CoinGecko together with an AI interpretation of those numbers. It is **not** financial, trading or investment advice, and makes no price predictions. Do your own research.

# Actor input Schema

## `coins` (type: `array`):

Coin names, symbols or CoinGecko ids — e.g. "bitcoin", "ETH", "solana". One per line.

## `vsCurrency` (type: `string`):

Fiat or crypto to price against (e.g. usd, eur, btc).

## `includeMarketChart` (type: `boolean`):

Pull a 30-day daily price series per coin to derive trend and volatility. Costs one extra CoinGecko call per coin and runs slower (rate limits).
