## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Domain WHOIS Lookup (RDAP): Registrar, Dates, Name Servers and Status for Any Domain

**$1 per 1,000 domains. Platform usage included. No rental, no minimum.**

The four most used WHOIS lookup actors on Apify Store charge $2.30 to $20.00 per 1,000 domains (Store prices checked 9 October 2026). This actor returns registrar, dates, status and name servers for $1.

Give it a list of domains. It asks each registry's own RDAP server, the official replacement for WHOIS, and returns the registrar, created, updated and expiry dates, status codes, name servers and DNSSEC flag. Owner details are included only where the registry publishes them, and most do not. No API key.

[Open it in Apify Console](https://console.apify.com/actors/RtMuLNQ3OaHUzlqRb/input)

### What it costs

| Domains | This actor | Most used WHOIS lookup actors on the Store |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | $1.00 | $2.30 to $20.00 |
| 10,000 | $10.00 | $23 to $200 |
| 100,000 | $100.00 | $230 to $2,000 |

Plus $0.001 per run. One flat price, platform usage included, so there is no separate compute or proxy bill. A daily run that checks 300 domains costs about $0.30, or about $9 a month. A domain that the registry reports as not registered comes back as a row with `registered: false` and is charged like any other row. Domains whose registry has no RDAP server, and lookups that fail, return no row and cost nothing beyond the run fee.

### Why people switch

- **One flat price.** Compute is included, so the bill follows the number of domains and nothing else.
- **Official source.** Data comes from the registry's RDAP server, found through the IANA list, not from scraped WHOIS pages.
- **Expiry ready.** Every row has `expiresAt` and `daysUntilExpiry`, plus `domainAgeDays`, so a watch list is one filter away.
- **Subdomains and links are fine.** `www.example.co.uk` and `https://example.co.uk/page` are reduced to `example.co.uk` before the lookup.

### Quick start

1. Open the actor, paste your domains, press **Start**.
2. Or paste this input:

```json
{ "domains": ["apify.com", "wikipedia.org", "bbc.co.uk"], "maxItems": 100 }
```

3. Download the results as JSON, CSV or Excel, or read them through the API.

### Use it from code

```bash
curl -X POST "https://api.apify.com/v2/acts/one_dollar_store~domain-whois-rdap-lookup/run-sync-get-dataset-items?token=YOUR_APIFY_TOKEN" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"domains": ["apify.com", "wikipedia.org"]}'
```

```python
from apify_client import ApifyClient
client = ApifyClient("YOUR_APIFY_TOKEN")
run = client.actor("one_dollar_store/domain-whois-rdap-lookup").call(
    run_input={"domains": ["apify.com", "wikipedia.org"]}
)
for item in client.dataset(run["defaultDatasetId"]).iterate_items():
    print(item["domain"], item.get("registrar"), item.get("expiresAt"))
```

### Use it from an AI assistant

Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other assistants can call this actor through Apify's MCP server. Add it with this server address:

```
https://mcp.apify.com?tools=one_dollar_store/domain-whois-rdap-lookup
```

Then ask, for example: "Which of these 40 domains expire in the next 60 days, and who is the registrar for each?"

### Switching from another WHOIS actor

Domains go in `domains` (a list). The core output fields are `domain`, `registrar`, `createdAt`, `updatedAt`, `expiresAt`, `status` and `nameServers`. Dates are ISO 8601 in UTC. There is no raw WHOIS text, because RDAP returns structured data instead.

### Input

| Field | Type | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| `domains` | list of text | required | Domains to look up, one per line. Links, email addresses and subdomains are reduced to the registered domain. Repeats are removed. |
| `maxItems` | number | 1000 | Most rows in the run. Minimum 10. |

### Output fields

| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| `domain`, `tld` | The registered domain that was looked up, and its top level domain. |
| `queriedFrom` | The name you typed, when it was a subdomain or a link. |
| `registered` | `true` when the registry has the domain, `false` when it reports no such domain. |
| `registrar`, `registrarIanaId`, `registrarUrl` | Registrar name, its IANA number and web address, where the registry gives them. |
| `createdAt`, `updatedAt`, `expiresAt`, `transferredAt` | Registration, last change, expiry and last transfer dates (UTC). |
| `daysUntilExpiry`, `domainAgeDays` | Counted from the time of the lookup. Negative days mean the expiry date has passed. |
| `status` | Registry status codes, for example `client transfer prohibited`. |
| `nameServers` | Name servers in lower case. |
| `dnssecSigned` | `true` when the registry shows a signed delegation. |
| `abuseEmail`, `abusePhone` | Abuse contact of the registrar, when listed. |
| `registrant` | Name, organization, email, phone or country of the owner, only for the parts the registry shows. |
| `registrantHidden` | `true` when no name, organization or email of the owner is shown. This is the usual case. |
| `registryHandle`, `rdapUpdatedAt` | The registry's id for the domain and when its RDAP record was last refreshed. |
| `rdapServer`, `rdapUrl`, `queriedAt` | Which RDAP server answered, the exact address, and when. |

Empty fields are left out of a row. A row with `registered: false` holds only the domain, the server and the time.

### Limits

- **Only top level domains with an RDAP server.** The actor uses the IANA list of RDAP servers. When we tested on 9 October 2026, 1,203 top level domains had one, including .com, .org, .uk, .fr, .nl, .ca, .au, .in, .br, .dev and .xyz. Others, such as .io, .de, .ch, .se, .eu and .jp, had none, so those domains return no row. They are listed in the run summary under `unsupportedDomains`.
- **Owner details are mostly hidden.** Registries and registrars hide or mask them since data protection rules came in. You get a `registrant` object only where the registry shows one, and `registrantHidden` says which case you have. The actor does not try to get around that.
- **What a row holds depends on the registry.** Some leave out dates or the registrar (for example .au hides created and expiry dates). Missing fields are simply absent.
- **Registry data, not registrar pages.** For .com the registry gives the registrar, dates, status and name servers. It is a thin record, with no owner details.
- **Rate limits.** Requests to each RDAP server are paced, and a busy server gets a pause and up to three tries. A lookup that still fails returns no row and is listed under `failedDomains`.
- **Registered domains only.** A subdomain is reduced to its registered domain. The actor does not look up IP addresses or AS numbers.

### FAQ

**What is the cheapest WHOIS lookup on Apify?**
This actor costs $1 per 1,000 domains with platform usage included. The four most used WHOIS lookup actors on the Store charged $2.30 to $20.00 per 1,000 when we checked on 9 October 2026.

**How much does it cost to look up 10,000 domains?**
$10, plus $0.001 for each run.

**Do I pay for compute or proxy on top?**
No. Platform usage is included in the $1 per 1,000 price.

**Is RDAP the same as WHOIS?**
RDAP is the replacement for WHOIS that the registries now run, defined by the IETF. It returns structured JSON from the registry itself instead of free text from port 43. Registries now publish their registration data this way.

**Can I see who owns a domain?**
Only if the registry shows it. Most hide the owner, and this actor does not try to get past that.

**Is it legal?**
The actor sends ordinary lookups to public RDAP servers and returns what they publish to anyone. How you use the data is up to you: follow the registries' terms and the law where you live, including data protection rules if a record names a person.

**Is this an official ICANN, IANA or registry product?**
No. It is an independent tool and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any registry or registrar.

**Do I need an Apify account?**
Yes. Actors run from an Apify account, and a free account is enough to start: it includes $5 of platform usage every month. You can [sign up here](https://www.apify.com?fpr=ymnoit). This is a referral link and it costs you nothing.

**Is there a limit on the free plan?**
Yes. A run started from a free plan account delivers the first 10 results, then ends with a message and a link to the plans. Any paid plan returns everything you ask for, up to your own limit. The price per result is the same on every plan.
