## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Open Food Facts Scraper: food products with nutrition, Nutri-Score and labels

**$1 per 1,000 products. Platform usage included. No rental, no minimum.**

Get products from the Open Food Facts database as clean rows: barcode, name, brand, Nutri-Score, NOVA group, nutrition per 100 g, ingredients, allergens, additives, labels, countries and a front image. Filter by category, brand, country, label, Nutri-Score or NOVA group, or look up a list of barcodes. The actor uses the official Open Food Facts API. No key is needed.

[Open it in Apify Console](https://console.apify.com/actors/ulEzdEALhgqUHuZHI/input)

**Data source and licence:** Open Food Facts (openfoodfacts.org), made by its contributors. The database is available under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0 and its contents under the Database Contents License 1.0. Product images are under CC BY-SA. If you publish the data, credit Open Food Facts and share derived databases under the same licence. Every row carries a `dataLicense` field with this notice.

### What it costs

| Products | Price |
|---|---|
| 1,000 | $1.00 |
| 10,000 | $10.00 |

Plus $0.001 per run. One flat price, platform usage included, so there is no separate compute or proxy bill. A weekly run of 500 products costs about $0.50 a week.

### Why use it

- **Follows the site's rules.** It uses the documented API, sends its own User-Agent and stays under the published limits of 10 searches and 15 product reads a minute. It never reads the HTML pages.
- **Filters on how Open Food Facts tags products.** Category, brand, country, label, Nutri-Score and NOVA group, sorted by popularity or by newest change.
- **Nutrition ready to use.** Energy, fat, saturated fat, carbohydrates, sugars, fibre, protein, salt and sodium per 100 g as plain numbers.
- **Licence on every row.** The `dataLicense` field travels with the data.

### Quick start

1. Open the actor, press **Start**. The default input returns the most scanned breakfast cereals.
2. Or paste this input:

```json
{ "categories": ["Breakfast cereals"], "sortBy": "unique_scans_n", "maxItems": 50 }
```

3. Download the results as JSON, CSV or Excel, or read them through the API.

### Use it from code

```bash
curl -X POST "https://api.apify.com/v2/acts/one_dollar_store~open-food-facts-products-scraper/run-sync-get-dataset-items?token=YOUR_APIFY_TOKEN" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"categories": ["Chocolate spreads"], "countries": ["France"], "maxItems": 100}'
```

```python
from apify_client import ApifyClient
client = ApifyClient("YOUR_APIFY_TOKEN")
run = client.actor("one_dollar_store/open-food-facts-products-scraper").call(
    run_input={"categories": ["Chocolate spreads"], "countries": ["France"], "maxItems": 100}
)
for item in client.dataset(run["defaultDatasetId"]).iterate_items():
    print(item["barcode"], item.get("name"), item.get("nutriScoreGrade"))
```

### Use it from an AI assistant

Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other assistants can call this actor through Apify's MCP server. Add it with this server address:

```
https://mcp.apify.com?tools=one_dollar_store/open-food-facts-products-scraper
```

Then ask, for example: "Find 50 organic breakfast cereals sold in France with Nutri-Score A."

### Switching from another Open Food Facts actor

Most Open Food Facts actors take a category, a brand or a list of barcodes and a result limit. Here they are `categories`, `brands`, `barcodes` and `maxItems`. The core fields are `barcode`, `name`, `brands`, `nutriScoreGrade`, `novaGroup` and the `...100g` nutrition fields.

### Input

| Field | Type | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| `barcodes` | list of text | none | Look up products by barcode (EAN or UPC, 8 to 14 digits). When set, the filters are not used. |
| `categories` | list of text | none | Category names such as `Breakfast cereals` or `Orange juices`. All listed categories have to match. |
| `brands` | list of text | none | Brand names. All listed brands have to match. |
| `countries` | list of text | none | Countries where the product is sold, in English. |
| `labels` | list of text | none | Labels such as `Organic`, `Vegan`, `Fair trade`. |
| `nutriScore` | text | `any` | `a` to `e`. |
| `novaGroup` | text | `any` | `1` to `4`. |
| `sortBy` | text | `unique_scans_n` | `unique_scans_n` (most scanned first), `last_modified_t`, `created_t` or `product_name`. |
| `maxItems` | number | 100 | Stop after this many products. Minimum 10, at most 10,000. |

With no filters at all, the actor returns the most scanned products overall. There is no free text search: the Open Food Facts v2 search API has none, so find products by category, brand, country, label or barcode.

### Output fields

| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| `barcode`, `name`, `genericName`, `brands`, `quantity`, `servingSize` | Identification as entered by Open Food Facts contributors, in their language. |
| `categories`, `countries`, `labels`, `allergens`, `additives` | Tag lists. The `en:` prefix is removed; other languages keep theirs, for example `fr:triman`. |
| `ingredientsText`, `ingredientsCount` | Ingredient list as printed, and the number of ingredients. |
| `nutriScoreGrade`, `nutriScore`, `novaGroup`, `ecoScoreGrade` | Nutri-Score letter and score, NOVA group 1 to 4, Eco-Score letter. |
| `energyKcal100g`, `fat100g`, `saturatedFat100g`, `carbohydrates100g`, `sugars100g`, `fiber100g`, `proteins100g`, `salt100g`, `sodium100g` | Nutrition per 100 g or 100 ml, in grams except energy. |
| `packaging`, `stores`, `origins`, `manufacturingPlaces` | Free text fields, when filled in. |
| `imageUrl`, `url` | Front image and the product page on Open Food Facts. |
| `completeness`, `uniqueScans` | Data completeness (0 to 1) and how many people scanned the product. |
| `createdAt`, `lastModifiedAt` | When the product was added and last edited. |
| `dataLicense` | The licence and credit line for the data. |

Fields without a value are left out of the row.

### Limits

- Open Food Facts is edited by volunteers. Names, ingredients and nutrition can be missing, out of date or in another language, and a Nutri-Score is only there when the data allows it.
- The site allows 10 searches and 15 product reads a minute from one address, and the actor stays under that. A search returns up to 100 products per request, so a 1,000 product run takes about a minute at best. Barcode lookups run about one every 4.5 seconds, so 100 barcodes take about 8 minutes.
- A run returns at most 10,000 products. Open Food Facts asks users who need more than a few hundred products at a time to use its data downloads (CSV, JSONL and Parquet), and this actor is for filtered pulls and lookups.
- If the site answers with an error or asks the actor to slow down, the actor waits and tries again a few times. If the site stays down, the run ends with the rows it has.
- No free text search. Filters match Open Food Facts tags, so a category or brand name has to match how the site spells it.
- Prices and shop offers are not part of the data.

### FAQ

**How much does it cost to scrape 10,000 Open Food Facts products?**
$10, plus $0.001 for each run.

**Do I pay for compute or proxy on top?**
No. Platform usage is included in the $1 per 1,000 price. The actor needs no proxy.

**Where does the data come from?**
From the official Open Food Facts API (world.openfoodfacts.org), a database built by volunteers. Source: Open Food Facts contributors.

**Is it legal?**
The actor reads public data through the official API, with no login. Open Food Facts publishes its database under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0 and its contents under the Database Contents License 1.0, which allow commercial use if you credit Open Food Facts and share derived databases under the same terms. Product images are under CC BY-SA. The `dataLicense` field on every row carries the notice.

**Is this an official Open Food Facts product?**
No. It is an independent tool and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Open Food Facts.

**How do I keep my copy fresh?**
Sort by `last_modified_t` and schedule a run, then use `barcode` to update the rows you already have.

**Do I need an Apify account?**
Yes. Actors run from an Apify account, and a free account is enough to start: it includes $5 of platform usage every month. You can [sign up here](https://www.apify.com?fpr=ymnoit). This is a referral link and it costs you nothing.

**Is there a limit on the free plan?**
Yes. A run started from a free plan account delivers the first 10 results, then ends with a message and a link to the plans. Any paid plan returns everything you ask for, up to your own limit. The price per result is the same on every plan.
