## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Charity Commission Register Search (England & Wales)

Search **all 170,000+ registered charities in England and Wales** (plus 210,000 removed ones) and export them as a
clean table: name, charity number, income and spending, year end, address, phone, email, website, company number,
what the charity does, and optionally its causes, beneficiaries and areas of operation.

Filter by name, postcode area, income band, cause, beneficiary group, how the charity works (e.g. grant-makers),
where it operates, registration date or removal date. **No API key needed**: the actor reads the Charity
Commission's official register extract, which is refreshed every day.

### What it's for

- **Fundraising and grant research:** find every grant-making charity working with children in Yorkshire, or all
  charities with income over £1m funding the environment.
- **B2B sales to the charity sector:** build lead lists for software, insurance, audit, payroll and consultancy, by
  size and location, with published contact details.
- **New registrations:** catch charities registered in the last week or month (`registeredFrom`).
- **Due diligence and monitoring:** look up a list of charity numbers and check status, latest income, whether
  accounts are overdue (`reportingStatus`), insolvency or administration.
- **Research and journalism:** income distributions, charities removed since a date, sector mapping.

### Input

| Field | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| `nameContains` | Part of the name. Spaces and punctuation are ignored, so `food bank` also finds `FOODBANK`. |
| `charityNumbers` | Look up specific registered charity numbers. |
| `postcodePrefixes` | Contact postcode starts with: `LS` (all of Leeds), `M1`, `SW1A`. `LS1` won't match `LS11`. |
| `areasOfOperation` | Where the charity says it operates: `Leeds City`, `Wales`, `Kenya`. |
| `causes` | What it does: Education/training, Animals, Disability, Prevention or relief of poverty… (17 options). |
| `beneficiaries` | Who it helps: Children/young people, Elderly/old people, People with disabilities… (7 options). |
| `activities` | How it helps: Makes grants to organisations, Provides services… (10 options). |
| `activitiesContain` | Text in the charity's own description of its activities. |
| `status` | `registered` (default), `removed` or `all`. |
| `minIncome` / `maxIncome` | Latest annual income in pounds. |
| `registeredFrom` / `registeredTo` | Registration date range. |
| `removedFrom` | Removed from the register on or after this date. |
| `cioOnly` | Only Charitable Incorporated Organisations. |
| `withContactDetailsOnly` | Only charities with a published email, phone or website. |
| `includeLinkedCharities` | Include linked (subsidiary) charities, which are left out by default. |
| `includeClassifications` | Add `causes`, `beneficiaries`, `howItHelps` and `areasOfOperation` lists to each row. |
| `sortBy` | `charityNumber` (default), `incomeDesc` or `registeredDesc`. |
| `maxResults` | Stop after this many (default 1,000). |

```
### Pricing
**$0.002 per charity returned, plus $0.005 per run.** 1,000 charities cost $2.005.
Each run downloads and scans the full daily register (about 400,000 records), which takes 15–30 seconds; the start
fee covers that.
### Good to know
- Data is as of the Commission's latest daily extract (`extractDate`). Income and spending are from the latest annual
  return the charity filed.
- Contact details are what the charity published on the register. Many small charities don't publish an email.
- Trustee names are deliberately left out.
- Scottish (OSCR) and Northern Irish charities are separate registers and are not included.
