## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Ofsted Ratings & Report Cards (Schools + Early Years)

Get the latest Ofsted inspection results for **every state-funded school in England (about 22,000)** and **every
registered early years provider (about 60,000 nurseries, pre-schools and childminders)** as one flat table.

Schools include the **new report card grades** Ofsted has used since November 2025 (Inclusion, Curriculum and
teaching, Achievement, Attendance and behaviour, Personal development and wellbeing, Leadership and governance,
Early years, Post-16, plus Safeguarding met / not met), *and* the last graded judgement under the old framework
(Outstanding / Good / Requires improvement / Inadequate), *and* the latest ungraded inspection outcome. Most other
tools only show one of the three.

The actor always reads the newest management-information files Ofsted publishes on GOV.UK, so you never get a stale
copy.

### What it's for

- **Property and relocation:** schools near a postcode with their latest grades, for listings, area guides and
  relocation reports.
- **EdTech and education suppliers:** lead lists of schools by phase, size, trust, region or inspection outcome,
  for example schools whose report card says "Needs attention" in achievement.
- **Multi-academy trusts and local authorities:** monitor every school in a trust or council in one table.
- **Nursery groups and early years suppliers:** every childcare provider in an area with places and rating.
- **Journalism and research:** report card outcomes since November 2025, broken down by region or phase.

### Input

| Field | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| `providerTypes` | `schools`, `earlyYears`, or both. Default: schools. |
| `nameContains` | Part of the name. |
| `urns` | Look up specific Ofsted URNs (numbers for schools, `EY…` or numbers for early years). |
| `postcodePrefixes` | `LS` (all of Leeds), `M20`, `SW1A`. `LS1` won't match `LS11`. |
| `localAuthorities` | Council names, e.g. `Manchester`, `Kent`, `Tower Hamlets`. |
| `regions` | The nine English regions. |
| `phases` | School phase (`Primary`, `Secondary`, `Special`, `Nursery`, `Alternative provision`) or school/provider type (`Academy Sponsor Led`, `Childminder`, `Childcare on non-domestic premises`). |
| `overallEffectiveness` | Last graded judgement: Outstanding, Good, Requires improvement, Inadequate, Not judged, or No graded inspection. |
| `reportCardConcernsOnly` | Only schools with any report card area at "Needs attention" or "Urgent improvement". |
| `inspectedSince` | Latest inspection on or after this date. |
| `maxResults` | Stop after this many (default 1,000). |

**Every school and nursery in Manchester M20:**

```json
{
    "providerTypes": ["schools", "earlyYears"],
    "postcodePrefixes": ["M20"]
}
```

**Secondary schools in London with a report card concern:**

```json
{
    "regions": ["London"],
    "phases": ["Secondary"],
    "reportCardConcernsOnly": true
}
```

### Output

A school with a report card:

```json
{
    "providerType": "School",
    "urn": "141196",
    "name": "Levenshulme High School",
    "phase": "Secondary",
    "type": "Academy Sponsor Led",
    "postcode": "M19 1FS",
    "localAuthority": "Manchester",
    "region": "North West",
    "parliamentaryConstituency": "Gorton and Denton",
    "pupilsOrPlaces": 1057,
    "trust": "GREATER MANCHESTER EDUCATION TRUST",
    "latestInspectionDate": "2026-06-30",
    "reportCardInspectionDate": "2026-06-30",
    "reportCardPublished": "2026-09-22",
    "safeguarding": "Met",
    "inclusion": "Strong standard",
    "curriculumAndTeaching": "Expected standard",
    "achievement": "Strong standard",
    "attendanceAndBehaviour": "Strong standard",
    "personalDevelopmentAndWellbeing": "Expected standard",
    "earlyYears": "Not applicable",
    "post16": "Not applicable",
    "leadershipAndGovernance": "Strong standard",
    "reportCardHasConcern": false,
    "overallEffectiveness": null,
    "ungradedInspectionDate": "2022-06-09",
    "ungradedOutcome": "School remains Outstanding",
    "categoryOfConcern": null,
    "reportUrl": "https://reports.ofsted.gov.uk/inspection-reports/find-inspection-report/provider/ELS/141196",
    "dataAsAt": "2026-09-29",
    "source": "Ofsted management information, Open Government Licence v3.0"
}
```

An early years provider has the same columns, with `address`, `town`, `pupilsOrPlaces` (registered places),
`registeredOn`, `overallEffectiveness` and the four key judgements filled in, and the report card columns empty.

### Pricing

**$0.003 per school or provider returned, plus $0.005 per run.** 1,000 rows cost $3.005.

### Good to know

- **Report cards vs grades.** Schools inspected since November 2025 get report card grades (Exceptional, Strong
  standard, Expected standard, Needs attention, Urgent improvement) instead of a single overall grade. Schools not yet
  inspected under the new framework show their last graded judgement and/or their last ungraded inspection.
- **Pre-2019 grades.** Ofsted's current files leave the graded columns empty for schools whose last graded
  inspection was before September 2019; for those you'll usually see an ungraded outcome such as "School remains
  Good".
- **Childminders' names and addresses** are redacted by Ofsted and come back as `null`.
- **Update frequency.** Ofsted publishes school files monthly and early years files twice a year; `dataAsAt` shows
  which one you got.
- **England only.** Independent schools, further education and children's social care are not included yet.
