- Check digit validation for GTIN-8, UPC-E, GTIN-12 (UPC-A), GTIN-13
  (EAN-13) and GTIN-14, using GS1's modulo-10 algorithm.
- GTIN-14 normalisation, so barcodes recorded at different lengths can be
  matched.
- UPC-E expansion to UPC-A. A UPC-E carries the check digit of its
  expansion rather than of its own eight digits, so validating it against
  its own digits — the obvious implementation — rejects every real UPC-E.
- GS1 prefix allocation across 143 ranges, including ISBN, ISSN, coupon,
  refund-receipt and restricted-circulation ranges. Prefixes are read
  correctly per format: a GTIN-8 uses its own digits rather than a
  zero-padded GTIN-13, and a GTIN-14's indicator digit is excluded.
- Ambiguous 8-digit codes are reported with `also_valid_as` rather than
  silently resolved.
- Invalid barcodes are returned with a reason, free of charge.
