## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Federal Register Scraper: U.S. Rules, Notices & Comments

**Track new U.S. regulations automatically.** The Federal Register is the official daily journal of the U.S. government: every new rule, proposed rule, agency notice and presidential document is published there. This tool searches it and returns:

- **Document number**, title, type (rule, proposed rule, notice, presidential document), subtype and action
- **Abstract** (summary)
- **Agencies** involved
- **Publication date**, **effective date** and **comment deadline**
- Docket IDs, RINs, **CFR parts** affected, topics, citation, page count, significance and executive order number
- Links to the web page, the official **PDF** and the full-text XML, plus the comment link on Regulations.gov

Filter by **keyword, agency, document type, date, open comment period and significant rules**. Data comes from the **official FederalRegister.gov API**.

### Who is it for?

- **Compliance, legal and policy teams**: get every new rule from the agencies you follow, every morning.
- **Lobbyists, trade associations and nonprofits**: never miss a comment deadline.
- **Government contractors**: pairs with the **SAM.gov**, **USAspending** and **Grants.gov** tools listed below.
- **Journalists, researchers and AI builders**: build datasets and alerts on regulation.

### How to use it

1. Enter **search terms** and/or **agencies** (names or short names like EPA).
2. Choose **document types**, a date range, and optionally **Only documents open for public comment**.
3. Click **Start** and export to Excel, CSV or JSON. Schedule it daily for a regulation alert.

### Input example

```json
{
  "searchTerms": "artificial intelligence",
  "agencies": ["Commerce Department", "EPA"],
  "documentTypes": ["rule", "proposed-rule"],
  "publishedWithinDays": 30,
  "onlyOpenForComments": false,
  "maxResults": 200
}
```

### Output example

```json
{
  "documentNumber": "2026-14132",
  "title": "Enhanced Favorable Treatment for the United Arab Emirates Under the Export Administration Regulations",
  "type": "Rule",
  "action": "Final rule.",
  "agencies": ["Commerce Department", "Industry and Security Bureau"],
  "publicationDate": "2026-07-14",
  "effectiveDate": "2026-07-10",
  "commentsCloseDate": null,
  "rins": ["0694-AK54"],
  "cfrReferences": ["15 CFR 740", "15 CFR 742", "15 CFR 774"],
  "url": "https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2026/07/14/2026-14132/...",
  "pdfUrl": "https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/FR-2026-07-14/pdf/2026-14132.pdf"
}
```

### How much does it cost?

Pay-per-event: a small fee **per document** returned, plus a tiny per-run start fee, with no subscription and no separate platform usage costs. For example, 1,000 documents cost about $1. Searches with no matches are **not charged**. Set **Max documents** or **Maximum cost per run** to cap your spending.

### Use it through the API, integrations or AI agents

Run it from the Apify API, on a schedule, or connect it to Make, Zapier, n8n, Google Sheets or Slack. AI agents can call it through the Apify MCP server.

### FAQ

**Is it legal?** Yes. The Federal Register is public U.S. government information, and this tool uses its official public API.

**Found a bug or need a feature?** Open an issue. We usually reply within 24 hours.
