## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## UK Flood Warnings & River Levels: Environment Agency Live Data

Get **live flood warnings and alerts** for England, plus **river, sea and groundwater levels**, **flows** and **rainfall** from more than 4,000 **Environment Agency** monitoring stations. Warning rows include the severity (severe flood warning, flood warning, flood alert), area, county, river or sea, Environment Agency area, time raised and changed, the full public message and a link to the official check-for-flooding page. Station rows include the station name, river, town, catchment, coordinates, measurement type and unit, and the **latest reading**. River-level stations are compared with their **typical high and low range** and record level, and labelled **high, normal or low**. You can also collect every reading from the last 1–28 days. No login or API key is needed.

### Who is it for?

- **Insurers, property and logistics teams** monitoring flood risk to sites and routes.
- **Local news, travel and outdoor apps** showing live river and flood status.
- **Facilities, utilities and councils** setting up alerts.
- **Researchers and data journalists** analysing river levels.

### How to use it

1. Keep **Include current flood warnings** on to get every warning and alert in force (optionally filtered by county and severity).
2. Enter **towns** (the default is York and Oxford), **rivers**, **station IDs**, or a **latitude/longitude** with a radius.
3. Choose a **measurement** (level, flow, rainfall) and set **history days** to 0 for the latest reading or 1–28 for history.
4. Click **Start** and schedule it every 15 minutes or hourly if you need monitoring.

### Input example

```json
{"includeWarnings": true, "minSeverityLevel": "2", "rivers": ["River Severn"], "parameter": "level", "maxStationsPerSearch": 20}
```

### Output example

```json
{"recordType": "latest-level", "stationId": "L2404", "stationName": "York Foss Barrier", "river": "River Ouse", "town": "York", "parameter": "level", "unit": "mAOD", "dateTime": "2026-10-30T14:30:00Z", "value": 5.675, "typicalRangeLow": 5.052, "typicalRangeHigh": 7.9, "state": "normal"}
```

### How much does it cost?

Pay-per-event: a small fee **per record (warning or reading)** returned, plus a tiny per-run start fee. There is no subscription and no separate platform usage cost. For example, 1,000 readings cost about $0.30. Searches with no matches and error rows are **not charged**. Use **Max stations per search** or **Maximum cost per run** to cap your spending.

### Use it through the API, integrations or AI agents

Run it from the Apify API, on a schedule, or connect it to Make, Zapier, n8n or Google Sheets. AI agents can find and call it through the Apify MCP server. Output is clean JSON with the same fields on every run.

### FAQ

**Is it legal?** Yes. The Environment Agency publishes this real-time data for reuse under the **Open Government Licence v3.0**. Attribution: "This uses Environment Agency flood and river level data from the real-time data API (Beta)." It is environmental data, not personal data.

**Does it cover Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland?** No. It covers England only. Those nations have their own agencies (SEPA, Natural Resources Wales, DfI Rivers).

**How often is the data updated?** Most stations report every 15 minutes, and flood warnings update as soon as they are issued.

**What if there are no warnings?** You get a free note row saying no warnings are in force, and station readings are still returned.
