## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## US Nonprofit Search: IRS Tax-Exempt Organizations Data

Search more than 1.5 million U.S. tax-exempt organizations from the official **IRS Exempt Organizations Business Master File (EO BMF)**. Each row includes the EIN, organization name, city, state, ZIP, 501(c) subsection, **NTEE category**, foundation type, deductibility status, ruling date, latest tax period, and **assets, income and revenue**. Filter by state, name keywords, city, NTEE code, 501(c) type, revenue, assets and deductibility. Public domain U.S. government data. No login, no API key.

### Who is it for?

- **Fundraisers, grant-makers and CSR teams** finding charities by cause, place and size.
- **B2B sales teams** that sell to nonprofits (software, insurance, banking, consulting) building lead lists.
- **Researchers and journalists** analyzing the nonprofit sector.
- **Compliance teams** verifying EINs and tax-exempt status.

### How to use it

1. Add **states** (each state is one IRS file; DC and PR also work).
2. Optionally add **name keywords** (e.g. `food bank`), a **city**, **NTEE codes** (e.g. `E` for health, `K31` for food banks) or **501(c) types**.
3. Set **minimum revenue or assets**, and **max results**.
4. Click **Start** and export to CSV, Excel or JSON.

### Input example

```json
{"states": ["CA"], "nameKeywords": ["food bank"], "subsections": ["501(c)(3)"], "minRevenue": 1000000}
```

### Output example

```json
{"ein": "20-4374795", "name": "JACOBS & CUSHMAN SAN DIEGO FOOD BANK", "city": "San Diego", "state": "CA", "zip": "92121", "subsection": "501(c)(3)", "nteeCode": "K31", "nteeCategory": "Food, Agriculture & Nutrition", "foundationType": "Publicly supported organization", "deductibility": "Contributions are deductible", "rulingDate": "2006-05", "assets": 124335465, "revenue": 110962770}
```

### How much does it cost?

Pay-per-event: a small fee **per organization** returned, plus a tiny per-run start fee, with no subscription and no separate platform usage costs. For example, 1,000 organizations cost about $1. Searches with no matches are **not charged**. Set **Max results** or **Maximum cost per run** to cap your spending.

### Use it through the API, integrations or AI agents

Run it from the Apify API, on a schedule, or connect it to Make, Zapier, n8n or Google Sheets. AI agents can find and call it through the Apify MCP server. Output is clean JSON with the same fields on every run.

### FAQ

**Is it legal?** Yes. The EO BMF is published by the IRS for public use and is U.S. government public domain data. To protect privacy, the tool does not return the "in care of" name or the street address, because many small nonprofits are registered at a person's home. City, state and ZIP are kept.

**How fresh is it?** The IRS refreshes the file roughly monthly; the tool always downloads the current file.

**Does it include Form 990 details or officers?** No. It covers IRS registration and size data only, with no officer or employee names.
