## What's an Apify Actor?

Actors are web data automations that power AI and operations. They run on the Apify platform to scrape websites, process data, connect APIs, and automate workflows.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.
Actors are written with capital "A".

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.
The best way to integrate Actors is as follows.

- **AI agents and MCP clients** — the [Apify MCP server](https://docs.apify.com/integrations/mcp.md) at `https://mcp.apify.com` (remote, streamable HTTP, OAuth on first use).
- **Agentic workflows and local Actor development** — [Agent Skills](https://apify.com/.well-known/agent-skills/index.json) with the [Apify CLI](https://docs.apify.com/cli/docs.md): `npm install -g apify-cli`, then `apify login`.
- **JavaScript/TypeScript projects** — the official [JS/TS client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md): `npm install apify-client`.
- **Python projects** — the official [Python client](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md): `pip install apify-client`.
- **Any other language** — the [REST API](https://docs.apify.com/api/v2.md).

For usage examples, see the [API](#api) section below.

# README

## USAspending.gov Federal Contract Awards — official API, no login

Search any company's U.S. federal contract award history through USAspending.gov's own
official public API (`api.usaspending.gov`). No login, no API key, no proxies — this is the
same endpoint USAspending.gov's own search UI calls.

Official U.S. government open data: USAspending.gov is the government's official spending
transparency site under the OPEN Government Data Act, which requires federal data to be
released with "no restrictions on copying, publishing, distributing, transmitting, adapting,
or otherwise using the information for any purpose, commercial or non-commercial" (source:
OPEN Government Data Act / resources.data.gov open-licenses guidance, checked 2026-09-02).
This actor is not affiliated with or endorsed by USAspending.gov / the U.S. Treasury — it's
an independent client of their public API.

### Tested (2026-09-02)

| Search | Records found |
|---|---:|
| `Lockheed Martin` | 30 (capped by maxItems; thousands available) |
| a non-existent company name | 0 (no charge) |

### Input

```json
{
  "targets": ["Lockheed Martin", "Booz Allen Hamilton"],
  "maxItems": 1000
}
```

Each target is a company name (or part of one). Matches on USAspending's recipient search
index. A name with no awards simply returns 0 items.

### Output

One dataset item per contract award (sorted by award amount, largest first):

| Field | |
|---|---|
| `award_id` | the federal award/contract ID |
| `recipient_name` | registered recipient (company) name |
| `amount_usd` | total award amount in USD |
| `awarding_agency` | the federal agency that awarded the contract |
| `start_date` / `end_date` | period of performance |
| `award_type` | contract type code |
| `description` | award description text (when provided by the agency) |

Scope: procurement contracts only (award types A/B/C/D — definitive contracts, purchase
orders, delivery/task orders, BPA calls). Grants and other assistance awards to individuals
are out of scope by design — this actor targets company-to-government contracting data only,
not personal award recipients.

### Why this over USAspending.gov's own site

USAspending.gov's search is built for one company, one query, in a browser. This actor takes
a batch of company names and hands back structured rows — for GovCon competitive intelligence,
market sizing, or feeding an analytics/LLM pipeline that needs this as data, not a web page.

### Use Cases

- **GovCon competitive intelligence** — see which agencies, and how much, a competitor has been awarded
- **Market sizing** — aggregate award amounts across companies to size a federal contracting niche
- **Lead generation** — identify companies with a track record of specific award types for partnership or subcontracting outreach
- **Contract-history due diligence** — verify a vendor's award history before a subcontract or teaming decision

### Pricing

Pay per event: **$1.00 per 1,000 award records** collected. Nothing else.
