## Pricing

from $1.50 / 1,000 document converteds

This Actor is paid per event. You are not charged for the Apify platform usage, but only a fixed price for specific events.
Since this Actor supports Apify Store discounts, the price gets lower the higher subscription plan you have.

## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## PDF & Document to Markdown (LLM / RAG ready)

Turn PDFs, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, HTML, CSV and EPUB files into **clean Markdown or plain text** that you can feed straight into an LLM, a vector database or a search index.

Give it a list of document URLs. For each one you get:

- **Markdown with structure**: headings detected from font size and weight, paragraphs re-joined across line breaks, hyphenation repaired, bullet lists, and tables rendered as Markdown tables. That covers fully ruled tables and tables drawn with horizontal lines only, the usual style in research papers and reports.
- **Correct reading order**: two-column papers are read one column at a time. Every PDF result is checked against the PDF's own text layer, and you get a warning if words seem to be missing.
- **Clean output**: rotated watermarks and stamps ("PAID", "DRAFT") are removed, and Chinese and Japanese text comes without stray spaces between characters
- **OCR for scanned PDFs**: pages without a text layer are read with Tesseract OCR automatically, in 41 languages
- **Password-protected PDFs**: give the password once and it's stored encrypted
- **Clean text**: running headers, footers and page numbers removed (optional)
- **Metadata**: title, author, subject, creator, dates, page count, file size, SHA-256
- **RAG chunks (optional)**: chunks of roughly the size you choose, split on paragraph boundaries, each tagged with the headings it sits under
- **Tables as JSON (optional)**: every detected PDF table as rows of cells

### Typical uses

- Ingesting reports, papers, manuals and contracts into a RAG pipeline
- Bulk-converting document links found by another scraper
- Making PDFs searchable or diff-able as text

### Input

| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| Document URLs | Direct links to files. The type is detected from the content, not just the extension. |
| Output format | `markdown`, `text` or `both` |
| Chunk size / overlap | Set a chunk size to get `chunks` ready for embedding |
| PDF page range | e.g. `1-5,8,10-` |
| PDF password | Opens password-protected PDFs. Stored encrypted. |
| Max pages per PDF | Caps work and cost on very long files |
| OCR mode / languages | `auto` reads scanned pages only; choose the document languages |

### Output (one item per document)

```json
{
  "url": "https://arxiv.org/pdf/1706.03762",
  "status": "ok",
  "fileType": "pdf",
  "pageCount": 15,
  "pagesProcessed": 15,
  "metadata": {"creator": "LaTeX with hyperref", "producer": "pdfTeX-1.40.25"},
  "markdown": "# Attention Is All You Need\n\n## Abstract\n\nThe dominant sequence transduction models ...",
  "chunks": [{"index": 0, "headings": ["Attention Is All You Need", "Abstract"], "text": "..."}],
  "warnings": []
}
```

Failed downloads or unreadable files come back with `status: "error"` and a reason. **They are never charged.**

### Use it from code

Call it as an API and get the results back as JSON in one request:

```bash
curl -X POST "https://api.apify.com/v2/acts/prometheus-maker~pdf-document-to-markdown/run-sync-get-dataset-items" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $APIFY_TOKEN" -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"startUrls": [{"url": "https://arxiv.org/pdf/1706.03762"}], "chunkSize": 1500}'
```

A tested Python example is in [pdf_to_markdown.py](https://github.com/prometheus-maker/apify-tools-examples/blob/main/python/pdf_to_markdown.py) in the [examples repo](https://github.com/prometheus-maker/apify-tools-examples).

### Pricing

Pay per use: a small fee per converted document plus a small fee per page. PowerPoint counts one page per slide; files without pages (Word, Excel, HTML, CSV, EPUB) count one page per 3,000 characters of text, about one printed page. OCR pages cost extra because they need far more compute. Failed documents cost nothing. Use **Max pages per PDF** to cap the cost of very long files.

### Limits (honest list)

- OCR quality depends on scan quality; OCR output is plain paragraphs (no headings or tables).
- Tables with no lines at all come out as text, not as Markdown tables.
- Math in PDFs comes out as plain text (no LaTeX). Equations in Word files do become LaTeX, like `$β_{0}+β_{t}x_{t}$`.
- Password-protected Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, and old .doc/.ppt files, are not supported: you get a clear error and pay nothing. Old .xls spreadsheets work.
- Some damaged or unusual PDFs can't be read by the main engine. Those are read with a second engine (PDFium, the one in Chrome) as plain text, with a warning in `warnings`.
- Files up to 100 MB. Very large Word files can need more memory: one whose text alone was 12.5 MB used 791 MB, so give runs with such files 2 GB.

# Actor input Schema

## `startUrls` (type: `array`):

Direct links to PDF, DOCX, PPTX, XLSX, HTML, CSV or EPUB files. The file type is detected automatically.

## `outputFormat` (type: `string`):

Markdown keeps headings, lists and tables. Text is plain reading-order text.

## `chunkSize` (type: `integer`):

If set, also split the Markdown into chunks of about this many characters on paragraph boundaries. Each chunk lists the headings it sits under. 0 = no chunks.

## `chunkOverlap` (type: `integer`):

Characters repeated from the end of one chunk at the start of the next.

## `pageRange` (type: `string`):

Only convert these pages, e.g. "1-5,8,10-". Empty = all pages.

## `pdfPassword` (type: `string`):

For password-protected PDFs. Used for every PDF in this run and stored encrypted. Leave empty for normal files.

## `maxPagesPerDocument` (type: `integer`):

Safety cap on pages converted per PDF (0 = no cap). You pay per page, so this also caps cost.

## `ocrMode` (type: `string`):

Auto: OCR only pages that have no text layer (scans, photos). Always: OCR every page. Off: never. OCR pages are billed separately.

## `ocrLanguages` (type: `array`):

Languages present in the scanned documents. More languages are slower.

## `extractTables` (type: `boolean`):

Render ruled tables as Markdown tables.

## `includeTablesJson` (type: `boolean`):

Add a 'tables' field with each detected PDF table as rows of cells.

## `removeHeadersFooters` (type: `boolean`):

Drops lines that repeat at the top or bottom of most pages (running titles, page numbers), so they don't break up the text.

## `maxConcurrency` (type: `integer`):

How many files to download and convert at once. Higher is faster but uses more memory.
