## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## Hacker News Stories Scraper

Fetches stories from **Hacker News** via the official Algolia HN Search API. Supports top stories, Ask HN, Show HN, and job posts with optional keyword filtering.

### What you get

- `id` — HN story ID
- `title` — Story title
- `author` — Posted by (HN username)
- `points` — Upvote count
- `comments` — Number of comments
- `type` — Post type (story, ask_hn, show_hn, job)
- `createdAt` — ISO timestamp when posted
- `url` — External URL linked in the story
- `hnUrl` — Direct link to the HN discussion thread
- `scrapedAt` — ISO timestamp of when the record was collected

### Input

| Field | Type | Default | Description |
|-------|------|---------|-------------|
| type | String | story | Post type: story, ask_hn, show_hn, job |
| query | String | (empty) | Optional keyword filter |
| maxItems | Integer | 100 | Max records to return |

### Quick Start

1. Find the actor in [Apify Store](https://apify.com/purethought)
2. Click **Try for free** and set your inputs
3. Click **Start** and wait for the run to finish
4. Download results as JSON, CSV, or via the API

### Sample Output

Each item in the dataset looks like this:

```json
{
  "id": "38521043",
  "title": "Show HN: We built an open-source alternative to Datadog",
  "author": "prakhar1989",
  "points": 847,
  "comments": 213,
```

### Use cases

- Monitor trending tech topics and sentiment on HN
- Track Ask HN threads for market research
- Build HN digest newsletters or Slack bots
- Analyse tech community interest over time by keyword

### Notes

- Uses the official Algolia HN Search API — no HTML scraping, very stable
- Data is fully public
- Set maxItems to 0 for up to 1000 results per run
- Rate limit: Algolia allows ~10,000 requests/hour
