## Pricing

$0.25 / 1,000 matched census geocodes

This Actor is paid per event. You are not charged for the Apify platform usage, but only a fixed price for specific events.

## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## U.S. Census Address Geocoder — Tract & Block API

Turn U.S. street addresses into standardized Census matches, coordinates, county FIPS codes, Census tract IDs, and Census block IDs using the official U.S. Census Bureau Geocoder.

Use it for **geographic enrichment, CRM/data cleanup, real-estate research, demographic join preparation, address-to-Census mapping, and automated geocoding workflows**.

**Independent tool. Not affiliated with or endorsed by the U.S. Census Bureau. A Census address-range match is not USPS deliverability, occupancy, ownership, or identity verification.**

### Common use cases

- Convert street addresses into Census tract and block identifiers
- Add county/state FIPS and geography GEOIDs to records
- Prepare address datasets for demographic or geographic joins
- Standardize Census-matched addresses and coordinates
- Feed official Census geography identifiers into downstream analysis

### What you get

One diagnostic/data row is kept per processed input address, preserving input order.

Statuses are `matched`, `ambiguous`, or `not-found`. Matched rows can include standardized address, coordinates, TIGER/Line identifiers, state/county FIPS, county name, Census tract, Census block, block group, plus a `geographyIds` map containing every returned layer GEOID.

### Try it

```json
{
  "addresses": ["1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20500"],
  "includeGeographies": true,
  "maxConcurrency": 4,
  "maxRequestRetries": 2
}
```

### Source

Official Census Geocoder REST service: `https://geocoding.geo.census.gov/geocoder/`

The current benchmark is `Public_AR_Current`. When geography enrichment is enabled, the Actor requests `Current_Current` geography and preserves returned GEOIDs.

No separate Census API key is required for this public geocoding service.

### Important limitations

This Actor is intentionally narrow. It focuses on the join keys analysts, CRM workflows, real-estate pipelines and demographic-enrichment jobs usually need after geocoding.

It does not add postal validation, identity/ownership verification, a reverse-geocoding product, or unrelated enrichment. Census address-range matching should not be interpreted as proof of deliverability, occupancy, ownership, or identity.

### Pricing

Target price: **$0.25 per 1,000 matched geocodes** ($0.00025 per matched or ambiguous result).

No-match diagnostic rows and legitimate zero-result summary rows are not billed. If the run's charge budget allows zero billable rows, the Actor stops before making Census requests.

# Actor input Schema

## `addresses` (type: `array`):

1 to 250 one-line U.S. street addresses. Duplicates are preserved in input order.

## `includeGeographies` (type: `boolean`):

Include county, tract, block and other geography IDs in addition to the standardized address and coordinates.

## `maxConcurrency` (type: `integer`):

Keep this modest because the upstream Census service is public infrastructure.

## `maxRequestRetries` (type: `integer`):

Retries transient rate limits, network failures and temporary server errors.

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "addresses": [
    "1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20500",
    "350 5th Ave, New York, NY 10118"
  ],
  "includeGeographies": true,
  "maxConcurrency": 4,
  "maxRequestRetries": 2
}
```

## `dataset` (type: `string`):

```javascript
import { ApifyClient } from 'apify-client';
// Initialize the ApifyClient with your Apify API token
// Replace the '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>' with your token
const client = new ApifyClient({
    token: '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>',
    ]
};
// Run the Actor and wait for it to finish
const run = await client.actor("quartz_apple_dnx/us-census-address-geography-api").call(input);
// Fetch and print Actor results from the run's dataset (if any)
console.log('Results from dataset');
console.log(`💾 Check your data here: https://console.apify.com/storage/datasets/${run.defaultDatasetId}`);
const { items } = await client.dataset(run.defaultDatasetId).listItems();
items.forEach((item) => {
