## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

**Search every US federal grant opportunity on Grants.gov and get clean rows with award ceiling, floor, deadline, eligibility and agency contact, plus new-grant alerts.**

**Rate your experience:** if you have used this Actor, you can tell us how it went on the [reviews page](https://apify.com/radiant_opuntia/grants-gov-alerts/reviews). Honest feedback of any kind helps us improve it.

### What it does and who it is for

This Actor searches **Grants.gov**, the US government's central site for federal grant opportunities, and returns one flat record per opportunity: **title, agency, status, posted and close dates, award ceiling and floor, estimated total funding, number of awards, eligible applicants, funding category, description and agency contact**. It reads the official Grants.gov public API (the search call plus the per-opportunity detail call), with no API key, login or browser automation.

Filter by keyword, status (forecasted, posted, closed, archived), agency, funding category, eligible applicant type, funding instrument, Assistance Listing number, posted-within-N-days and a minimum award ceiling. Turn on **Only new** to get just the grants you have not seen before.

#### Use cases

- **Grant writers and consultants:** a daily feed of new funding notices for each client profile.
- **Nonprofits, universities, cities and tribes:** track opportunities you are eligible for using the applicant-type filter.
- **Small businesses:** follow small-business-eligible funding such as SBIR/STTR programs.
- **GovTech and grant-management software:** enrich your product with structured opportunity data.
- **AI agents:** call it through the Apify API or MCP server to answer "which open federal grants mention rural broadband?".

### Why use this instead of the free official site or API

The underlying data is public and the official sources are free. What this Actor adds is convenience: one input, one flat table, and a memory of what you have already seen.

| What you need | Official site / API | This Actor |
|---|---|---|
| Searching with several filters at once | Search page for people; the API search call returns summary hits only | Keyword, status, agency, category, eligibility, instrument, listing number, recency and minimum ceiling in one input |
| Award ceiling, floor, eligibility, contact | A second API call (or a page visit) per opportunity | Detail fields are merged into each row when **Include details** is on (the default) |
| Only grants you have not seen | You compare today's results to yesterday's yourself | **Only new** mode with a named alert remembers returned opportunities |
| Getting data into a sheet or CRM | Copy and paste, or write your own client | JSON, CSV or Excel download, API, webhooks and integrations |

If you only need a single lookup now and then, the official site is fine. If you want the same data on a schedule, as flat rows you can feed to a spreadsheet, CRM or agent, this saves the glue work.

### "New since yesterday" alerts

Turn on **Only new** and the Actor remembers what it has already returned, so each scheduled run delivers only records you have not seen before.

1. Open the Actor in Apify Console and set the input, with **Only new since last run** switched on and a fixed alert name (`stateKey`). Example input:

```json
{
  "keyword": "broadband",
  "statuses": ["posted", "forecasted"],
  "postedWithinDays": 30,
  "includeDetails": true,
  "maxResults": 200,
  "onlyNew": true,
  "stateKey": "broadband-grants"
}
```

2. Click **Save as task**, then open **Schedules**, create a schedule (for example the cron expression `0 7 * * *` for every day at 7:00 in the time zone you pick) and add the task to it.
3. Under the task's **Integrations**, send the results to Slack, email, Google Sheets, a webhook or your own system.

A 30-day window with Only new is a good pattern: anything posted in the last 30 days that you have not received yet is returned exactly once.

The first run returns everything that matches your window (every matching opportunity posted in the last 30 days); later runs return only unseen records. Use a different alert name for each task so each keeps its own memory. A run with nothing new returns no results.

### Cost per run

This Actor uses **pay-per-result pricing: $3.00 per 1,000 results ($0.003 per result)**, with the Apify platform fee included. You are charged for the records a run returns and nothing is added on top for platform usage. A run that finds nothing new returns no results, so it has no per-result charge. The **Max results** input caps what a run can return (and so what it can cost).

**Worked example:** a daily alert that finds 15 new matching grants returns 15 results, so 15 × $0.003 = $0.045 for that run, about $1.35 for a 30-day month. A one-off pull of 2,000 opportunities costs 2 × $3.00 = $6.00.

The pricing is configured in Apify Console; the Pricing tab on this page is the authoritative source if it ever differs from this text.

### Limits worth knowing

- Data is read live from Grants.gov on every run, so it is as fresh as the Grants.gov site itself.
- Award amounts, deadlines and totals are empty when the agency did not publish them, which is common for forecasts.
- With **Include details** off the run is faster, but the detail-only fields (ceiling, floor, eligibility, contact and so on) are not filled.
- The **minimum award ceiling** filter needs the detail data, so opportunities without a published ceiling are skipped when it is set.
- With a small **Max results** and Only new on, each run returns the next unseen batch, not the same records again.

### FAQ

#### Do I need an API key or a Grants.gov account?

No. The Actor uses the public Grants.gov API without a key or login.

#### How current is the data?

Every run queries Grants.gov directly, so it shows what Grants.gov shows at that moment.

#### Why are some amounts empty?

The agency did not publish them. Forecast notices often have no ceiling or floor yet.

#### How do I find opportunities my organization can apply to?

Use the eligible-applicant filter (for example nonprofits, state governments or small businesses) together with a keyword.

#### Does it submit applications or give grant advice?

No. It returns public opportunity data only.
