## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

**Track who is winning US federal money: new contract, grant and loan awards from USAspending as flat rows with recipient, amount, agency, NAICS and place of performance.**

**Rate your experience:** if you have used this Actor, you can tell us how it went on the [reviews page](https://apify.com/radiant_opuntia/usaspending-awards-alerts/reviews). Honest feedback of any kind helps us improve it.

### What it does and who it is for

This Actor queries the **official USAspending.gov API** (no key) for **contract, IDV, grant and loan awards** and returns one flat record per award: **recipient and UEI, amount, awarding and funding agency and sub-agency, NAICS and PSC codes, assistance listing, place of performance, start and end dates, description and a link**.

Filter by award category, keywords, NAICS and PSC codes, awarding agency, place-of-performance state, recipient name, and amount range, using a rolling window or exact dates. Turn on **Only new** for daily award alerts.

#### Use cases

- **Government contractor BD teams:** see new awards in your NAICS codes and track competitors' wins.
- **Subcontractors and suppliers:** find primes that just won work you could support.
- **Sales and lead generation:** companies that just received federal money.
- **Analysts and journalists:** spending by agency, state or program.
- **AI agents:** answer "new IT contracts over $1M in Virginia in the last 30 days".

### Why use this instead of the free official site or API

The underlying data is public and the official sources are free. What this Actor adds is convenience: the search is saved as a repeatable input and the results arrive as flat, deduplicated rows.

| What you need | Official site / API | This Actor |
|---|---|---|
| Running the same search repeatedly | Rebuild the filters in the site's advanced search, or call the API yourself | Save the input once as a task and run it on a schedule |
| Flat, spreadsheet-ready rows | Nested API responses | One flat record per award with consistent fields |
| Seeing only new awards | Compare to the last export by hand | **Only new** mode with a named alert |
| Competitor tracking | Search by recipient in the UI | Recipient-name filter combined with amount, agency and state |

If you only need a single lookup now and then, the official site is fine. If you want the same data on a schedule, as flat rows you can feed to a spreadsheet, CRM or agent, this saves the glue work.

### Data fields

| `recipientName` | text | Recipient name. |
| `recipientUei` | text | Recipient Unique Entity ID (UEI). |
| `recipientLocation` | text | Recipient city, state and ZIP as published. |
| `amount` | integer | Award amount in USD (obligated or loan amount depending on category). |
| `totalOutlays` | text | Total outlays in USD, where reported (grants and loans). |

| `performanceState` | text | State where the work is performed. |
| `performanceZip` | text | ZIP code of the place of performance, when given. |
| `lastModified` | text | Date and time the award record was last modified at the source. |
| `url` | text | Link to the award on USAspending.gov. |
| `scrapedAt` | datetime | When the Actor collected the record (UTC). |

Fields a source does not publish are `null`. Which fields are filled depends on the award category: NAICS and PSC apply to contracts, assistance listings to grants and loans.

### "New since yesterday" alerts

Turn on **Only new** and the Actor remembers what it has already returned, so each scheduled run delivers only records you have not seen before.

1. Open the Actor in Apify Console and set the input, with **Only new since last run** switched on and a fixed alert name (`stateKey`). Example input:

```json
{
  "awardCategories": ["contracts"],
  "naicsCodes": ["541512", "541519"],
  "performanceStates": ["VA", "MD", "DC"],
  "minAmount": 250000,
  "dateType": "new_awards_only",
  "daysBack": 30,
  "maxResults": 500,
  "onlyNew": true,
  "stateKey": "dmv-it-contracts"
}
```

2. Click **Save as task**, then open **Schedules**, create a schedule (for example the cron expression `0 7 * * *` for every day at 7:00 in the time zone you pick) and add the task to it.
3. Under the task's **Integrations**, send the results to Slack, email, Google Sheets, a webhook or your own system.

Agencies report awards with a lag (Department of Defense data can be up to 90 days late). A 14 to 30 day window with Only new lets late-reported awards still reach you exactly once.

The first run returns everything that matches your window (all matching awards from the look-back window); later runs return only unseen records. Use a different alert name for each task so each keeps its own memory. A run with nothing new returns no results.

### Cost per run

This Actor uses **pay-per-result pricing: $3.00 per 1,000 results ($0.003 per result)**, with the Apify platform fee included. You are charged for the records a run returns and nothing is added on top for platform usage. A run that finds nothing new returns no results, so it has no per-result charge. The **Max results** input caps what a run can return (and so what it can cost).

**Worked example:** a daily alert that returns 30 new awards costs 30 × $0.003 = $0.09 per run, about $2.70 for a 30-day month. A one-off pull of 500 awards costs $1.50.

The pricing is configured in Apify Console; the Pricing tab on this page is the authoritative source if it ever differs from this text.

### Example input and output

### Limits worth knowing

- Agencies report to USAspending with a lag, so very recent awards may be missing. Use 14 to 30 day windows with Only new.
- With the date filter set to *Any action* or *Last modified*, an award can appear again when it changes; Only new returns each award version once.
- Fields differ by award category (NAICS/PSC for contracts, assistance listing for grants and loans), so some are `null` by design.
- With a small **Max results** and Only new on, each run returns the next unseen batch.

### FAQ

#### Do I need an API key?

No. USAspending.gov provides a public API without a key.

#### Why don't I see yesterday's awards?

Agencies report with a lag. Use a 14 to 30 day window with Only new so late-reported awards are still captured once.

#### Can I watch a specific competitor?

Yes, use the recipient name filter, optionally with agency, state and amount filters.

#### Is subcontract data included?

No. This Actor covers prime awards (contracts, IDVs, grants and loans).
