# US Recall Check: VIN, UPC & Product (NHTSA, CPSC, FDA) (`revenue-agent-jw/us-recall-check-vin-upc-product`) Actor

Check vehicles (VIN or make/model/year), products (name, brand or UPC) and food, drugs and devices against official US recall databases (NHTSA, CPSC, FDA) in one call. Normalized results with official links, for resale, marketplaces, fleets and AI agents.

## Pricing

$5.00 / 1,000 recall queries

This Actor is paid per event. You are not charged for the Apify platform usage, but only a fixed price for specific events.

## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## US Recall Check: VIN, Vehicle, UPC & Product (NHTSA, CPSC, FDA)

One actor that checks the official US recall databases:

| Input | Sources |
|---|---|
| **VIN** (17 chars) | NHTSA vPIC decode → NHTSA recalls for that make/model/year |
| **Vehicle** make/model/year | NHTSA recalls |
| **UPC / GTIN** barcode | CPSC recalls (prebuilt UPC index + live scan of recent recalls), openFDA drug (`openfda.upc`) and food (`code_info`) |
| **Product** text (+ brand) | CPSC SaferProducts recalls, FDA food, drug and device enforcement reports |

Each query returns **one row** with `anyRecall`, `count`, normalized `results` (newest first, with the official URL, date, hazard, remedy and recall number), the `sources` checked, `warnings` and `notes`.

### Use cases

Resale and marketplace listing checks, used-car tools, fleet managers, insurers, retailers screening returns, and AI shopping agents.

### Example input

```json
{ "vins": ["1HGCV1F30JA000000"], "upcs": ["840059614922"], "products": [{ "query": "stroller", "brand": "Graco" }], "since": "2024-01-01" }
```

### Important limits

- NHTSA's public recall API is **model-level**. A VIN tells you which recalls apply to that make/model/year, **not** whether this exact car has been repaired. Confirm at https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- CPSC has no official UPC search. UPC coverage depends on the UPCs CPSC published in its recall notices.
- FDA enforcement reports describe recalls classified by FDA. Not every recall lists a UPC.
- The data is public US Government information. This actor is not affiliated with NHTSA, CPSC or FDA. It is informational only, not safety or legal advice.

# Actor input Schema

## `vins` (type: `array`):

17-character VINs. Decoded with NHTSA vPIC, then checked against NHTSA recalls for that make/model/year (NHTSA's public API is model-level, not per-VIN).

## `vehicles` (type: `array`):

e.g. \[{"make":"Ford","model":"F-150","year":2021}]

## `upcs` (type: `array`):

6-14 digits. Checked against CPSC recalls (UPC index + recent recalls) and openFDA drug/food records.

## `products` (type: `array`):

Strings or {"query":"stroller","brand":"Graco"}. Searches CPSC and FDA food/drug/device recalls.

## `since` (type: `string`):

Optional: only return recalls on or after this date.

## `limitPerQuery` (type: `integer`):

Most recall results returned per query (1-50).

## Actor input object example

```json
{
  "vins": [
    "1HGCV1F30JA000000"
  ],
  "products": [
    {
      "query": "stroller",
      "brand": "Graco"
    }
  ],
  "limitPerQuery": 20
}
```

# Actor output Schema

## `results` (type: `string`):

One row per VIN, vehicle, UPC or product query in the default dataset: anyRecall flag, count, normalized NHTSA/CPSC/FDA recall results with official links, or an error row.

// Initialize the ApifyClient with your Apify API token
// Replace the '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>' with your token
const client = new ApifyClient({
    token: '<YOUR_API_TOKEN>',
});

// Prepare Actor input
const input = {

};

// Run the Actor and wait for it to finish
const run = await client.actor("revenue-agent-jw/us-recall-check-vin-upc-product").call(input);

// Fetch and print Actor results from the run's dataset (if any)
console.log('Results from dataset');
