## What's an Apify Actor?

An Actor is a serverless cloud program that runs on the Apify platform. It has two run modes.
In Batch mode, an Actor accepts a well-defined JSON input, performs an action which can take anything from a few seconds to a few hours,
and optionally produces a well-defined JSON output, datasets with results, or files in key-value store.
In Standby mode, an Actor provides a web server which can be used as a website, API, or an MCP server.

Apify vocabulary and the platform model are defined once, in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md.

## How to integrate an Actor?

If asked about integration, you help developers integrate Actors into their projects.
You adapt to their stack and deliver integrations that are safe, well-documented, and production-ready.

Do not guess an integration path. Every one of them is in the agent quickstart at https://apify.com/agents.md: the Apify MCP server, Agent Skills with the Apify CLI, the JavaScript and Python clients, the REST API, and the account-free path for an agent with no human to sign in. It also carries the rule on stating cost before the first paid run.

For examples already wired to this Actor's own input schema, see the [API](#api) section below.

Each client library has reference documentation the quickstart does not restate: [JavaScript/TypeScript](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/js/docs.md) (`npm install apify-client`) and [Python](https://docs.apify.com/api/client/python/docs.md) (`pip install apify-client`).

# README

## AutoTrader Canada Scraper (AutoTrader.ca)

AutoTrader Canada Scraper turns AutoTrader.ca searches into clean vehicle rows: CAD asking price, model year, make, model, trim, mileage, dealer or private seller, city, province and photos. Use it for dealer inventory monitoring, used car valuation, price research and import shortlists across Canada.

Paste any AutoTrader.ca search URL, or pick a manufacturer, model, province, city and filters for price, model year and kilometres. Turn on vehicle details to add the stock number, colour, drivetrain, doors, listing date, coordinates, vehicle history link, the source's market median price and the VIN where the listing publishes one. Export the dataset as JSON, CSV or Excel, or read it through the Apify API.

### What the AutoTrader Canada Scraper collects

Use this actor to monitor dealer inventory, compare asking prices, prepare vehicle valuation inputs or identify listings for an import shortlist. Each result represents one advertised vehicle. A stable listing identifier lets you compare observations from different runs, while the collection timestamp tells you when the search information was read. Asking prices represent the published listing price; they do not establish the final sale price, taxes, delivery costs or whether the vehicle remains available later.

Search results can include dealer stock and private sellers. Dealer names are returned only for dealerships. A private listing has a null dealer name, and any public callable phone number is retained when the source supplies it. Vehicle trim can contain the seller's marketing text, so treat it as a free-form description rather than a standard trim classification.

### How to scrape AutoTrader.ca data

1. Open the actor and paste an AutoTrader.ca search URL in `url`, or fill in `make`, `model`, `province` and `city`.
2. Add filters for price, model year, mileage, condition or seller type if you need a narrower market.
3. Set `limit` to the number of unique vehicles you want, up to 4,000 per search.
4. Switch on `include_details` when you need VIN, colour, drivetrain and the other vehicle detail fields.
5. Start the run and download the dataset, or schedule the actor to track the same search every day.

### Input

Provide an AutoTrader.ca search URL in `url`, or use the individual search fields. With no search fields, the actor searches Canadian vehicles and requests 100 listings. `limit` is the total requested number of unique vehicles, with an allowed range from 1 to 4,000. Non-paying users receive up to ten rows per run. The actor automatically continues larger collections in the Apify interface.

The main input fields are:

| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| `url` | AutoTrader.ca search URL, including any website filters |
| `make`, `model` | Manufacturer and optional model; a model requires a manufacturer |
| `province`, `city` | Province or territory code and city name |
| `postal_code`, `radius_km` | Postal code and supported search radius |
| `price_min`, `price_max` | Asking price bounds in CAD |
| `year_min`, `year_max` | Vehicle model year bounds |
| `mileage_min`, `mileage_max` | Odometer bounds in kilometres |
| `condition` | `all`, `new` or `used` |
| `seller_type` | `all`, `dealer` or `private` |
| `sort` | Relevance, price, model year, mileage or newest |
| `include_details` | Request public vehicle detail fields |
| `limit` | Total unique listings requested |

A supplied `url` takes precedence over the individual search filters. Your collection limit and detail setting still apply. Postal code takes precedence over city when using the individual fields. The radius options are 10, 20, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300 and 400 km, and require a city or postal code. Province codes are uppercase Canadian codes such as ON, BC, QC and AB.

The following search was fetched for the included October 5, 2026 research response:

```json
{
  "url": "https://www.autotrader.ca/cars/toyota/reg_on/cit_toronto?modelyearfrom=2020&modelyearto=2022&kmto=50000&pricefrom=15000&priceto=40000&sort=price&desc=0",
  "limit": 17
}
```

### Output

Each vehicle is saved as one row in the default dataset. Export rows as JSON, CSV or Excel, or read the dataset through the Apify API. Core fields include `listing_id`, `url`, `title`, numeric `price`, `currency`, `country`, `brand`, `condition`, `image_url`, `position`, `source` and `fetched_at`. Currency is CAD and the market is CA. Missing source fields are null rather than inferred.

Vehicle information includes `year`, `make`, `model`, `trim`, `engine`, `fuel_type`, `transmission` and `mileage_km`. Seller fields include `seller_type`, `dealer_name`, `dealer_id`, `dealer_phone`, `city`, `province` and `postal_code`. Photo URLs and the search description are retained. Descriptions can include HTML and may be shortened in the search results.

With `include_details: true`, a successfully collected vehicle may also have `vin`, `stock_number`, `body_type`, `exterior_color`, `drivetrain`, `doors`, `listed_at`, coordinates, `carfax_url` and `market_median_price`. `details_fetched` records whether the matching vehicle details were successfully collected. A failed detail fetch keeps the search row and reports incomplete work. A null VIN can occur after a successful detail fetch because many listings do not publish it.

This excerpt comes from a real search response collected on October 5, 2026:

```json
  "listing_id": "f2899694-17af-4cf8-bf7f-d8a68fbae1ff",
  "market_median_price": 30900,
  "details_fetched": true
}
```

This dealer did not publish a VIN, so `vin` is null although the details were collected. A private seller row from the October 5, 2026 Honda Civic search in Ontario looks like this: `"title": "2022 Honda Civic Sport"`, `"price": 24800`, `"mileage_km": 67700`, `"seller_type": "private"`, `"dealer_name": null`, `"city": "Innisfil"`.

### Use cases

#### Dealer inventory and competitor monitoring

Run the same search for a make, province or competitor's area every day and compare rows by `listing_id`. New identifiers are fresh stock, disappeared identifiers are likely sold or delisted, and a lower `price` on a known identifier is a price drop.

#### Used car valuation in Canada

Collect comparable vehicles by make, model, year range and mileage band, then compute your own median price per kilometre band. The detail field `market_median_price` and the search field `price_rating` show how the source itself positions each offer.

#### Import and export shortlists

Filter on model year, mileage and price, request details for VINs where shown, and keep the dealer, city and province to plan inspections and transport.

#### Market research and dashboards

Province and city fields, fuel type and condition make it simple to chart electric vehicle supply, used versus new mix or dealer versus private share across Canadian regions.

### AutoTrader Canada Scraper compared with other options

- **Dealer feeds from AutoTrader.ca**: built for dealers to manage their own stock, not to read the wider market.
- **Writing your own scraper**: you maintain pagination, filters, deduplication and detail parsing yourself whenever the website changes.
- **Other Store actors**: several actors cover AutoTrader.ca. This one keeps prices numeric in CAD, returns a contiguous `position`, says per row whether the details succeeded (`details_fetched`) and never invents a VIN that the listing does not show.
- **Our AutoTrader scraper for the United States** covers autotrader.com. Use this actor for Canadian inventory.

### Pricing

Listing events count delivered unique vehicle rows. Detail events count only delivered rows whose matching detail page was successfully collected, as shown by `details_fetched`. A successful detail lookup can have a null VIN and still counts as a detail, because the other published vehicle fields were collected. Failed detail lookups do not generate a detail event. Empty results have no listing or detail events, and this actor does not add a run-start event. Consult the actor's current Apify pricing for the monetary amount of each event. Users without a paid Apify plan receive up to 10 vehicles per run; paid users can request up to 4,000 per search. Apify's own platform usage is separate from these actor events.

### Limits and data quality

AutoTrader.ca exposes at most 200 search pages, usually up to 4,000 vehicles per search. Some filtered pages contain fewer rows. Narrow the manufacturer, province, year or price range to collect additional inventory in separate searches. Deduplicate those exports by `listing_id` when combining overlapping searches.

The `search_result_type` field distinguishes `Organic` from `Deliverable`. Deliverable results can advertise vehicles outside the selected radius. Filter that field if you require strictly local comparisons. Inventory changes between requests, so neither a total result count nor a snapshot establishes that every car was available at exactly the same moment.

### FAQ

#### Does every vehicle have a VIN?

No. VIN is returned only when published in the public vehicle details. Request details to collect available VINs, and allow null values even when `details_fetched` is true.

#### Can I use a search URL instead of individual filters?

Yes. Paste a Canadian AutoTrader search URL in `url`. Its website filters take precedence over the actor's individual search filters. The actor still applies your total limit and detail setting.

#### Are private sellers included?

Yes. Choose all sellers or set `seller_type` to `private` or `dealer`. Private seller rows have a null dealership name. Public phone numbers may be available for either seller category.

#### Why did I receive fewer listings than requested?

The search may contain fewer vehicles, the website may reach its page ceiling, or a collection may finish with an upstream interruption. Review the run output and warnings, then narrow the search or repeat the collection if appropriate.

#### Can I compare prices across countries?

This actor covers Canada and returns CAD. Keep the currency field when joining these rows to other markets, and apply an explicit exchange-rate conversion if your analysis requires it.

#### Is there an AutoTrader Canada API?

AutoTrader.ca offers feeds for its own dealers, not a public API for market data. This actor works as an AutoTrader Canada API: start it through the Apify API with a search URL or filters and read the vehicle rows as JSON.

#### How often can I run the AutoTrader Canada Scraper?

As often as your use case needs. Schedule it daily or hourly on the same search and compare `listing_id` values to track new stock, price changes and sold vehicles.

#### Does it cover new cars as well as used cars?

Yes. Set `condition` to `new` or `used`, or keep `all`. The `condition` field also recognises demo and classic vehicles.
